The Year of the Mouse - Day 7 Friday 9th May - Blizzard Beach, Magic Kingdom & Be Our Guest!

Day 7 - Blizzard Beach, Magic Kingdom and Be Our Guest - Friday 9th May

I’d been looking forward to today, forever and a day, as it was the day of my coveted Be Our Guest reservation and our first trip to Magic Kingdom. With no alarm set I woke up at 8.30 and Liam followed an hour later at 9.30. Without fail he always woke up an hour later than me when we didn’t have an alarm set!

While Liam slept I had a bagel and a nice chill out. I went on my phone and had a read and messaged back home. Once Liam sleepy head woke up we got ready to go out to Blizzard Beach. I’m not sure what time we arrived, I’d imagine between 11 and 12 as I don’t remember arriving that early. It was quiet today but not nearly as quiet as Typhoon Lagoon had been the day before. We still got to go on a couple of slides though.

We went in the pool first but for some reason we found it really cold? It wasn’t a cold day by any means! So we didn’t go in for very long or very deep. There were no free rings either until later so we couldn’t float around, just stand up and the floor was reeeeaaaallllyyyy hard on our little feetsies! We thought we’d get out and go around the lazy river for a bit.

Liam made a buggy friend!...

...And deposited him safely out of the water!

Once we were suitably lazy rivered out, we walked through the mountain to go on some slides. The first slides we got to, I think, were Storm Slides and they had no queue. First time round we went together on a double ring, down the right hand slide, because for some reason there was a huge queue for the left hand side? Not sure why? After that we headed back up and did it individually on the enclosed slide, which was dark and fun!

We don’t really know BB that well so after we’d done that we carried on walking to see what other slides we would come across. We found 3 that are close together, racing ones. They seemed to have the longest queues so we only did one. We headed for the toboggan racers. Now if you remember when we went to Aquatica I spoke about my inherent fear of my flabbiness stopping me being able to push off haha, so again, I was pretty nervous. But I needn’t have worried. In fact, Liam was the one who should have worried hehe.

He was annoyed because the lifeguard forces everyone to lay totally flat on the mat. So you can’t bend your knees and use your legs to push you off. Problem is, Liam’s about 6’3 so it’s fairly impossible for him to lay flat in a small space like that without twisting up into a pretzel. So silly Liam couldn’t push himself off and he got stuck at the top momentarily. He said it was ok, nothing special, he was most put out.

We went off to get on the ski lift after that and we got paired with an American guy. He asked us a few questions and he said he’d only arrived that day. We told him the queues in the water parks had been pretty short. We stopped quite a bit on the journey so we got a good look at the crazies doing Summit Plummit… I could just imagine the bruises they’d be covered in tomorrow! There was a big queue for that, as usual. Neither of us wanted to do it, and Liam said he would only do it if there was miraculously no queue lol. So we headed to the family raft ride and were paired with a family of three, a mom and two sons. It was quite fun! It went on for such a long time.

By this point we were getting a bit bored so plopped back into the lazy river for a little bit. When we got out we knew we wanted to leave but I had decided I had to treat Liam to a Sand Pail. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m SURE I remember them being called Garbage Pails? Did the name change? Either way, Liam went and had a sit down on a picnic bench while I grabbed the ice cream. I didn’t tell him what I was ordering so it was a total surprise. It was about $9 something I think? For the amount you get that’s not too bad I don’t think.

We attempted the mammoth behemoth but it got the better of us and we only finished about half of it. It was really nice but there were lots and lots of Oreos in it, a little too much. We wanted to keep the bucket though so we scraped what was left into the bin. We hopped into the car in our wet things because I think that’s the worst bit of going to a water park. Having to get changed out of your wet things and changing and washing your hair and brushing and getting ready all over again. So we just wrapped ourselves in towels and away we went!

Once back at the hotel Liam had a bit of a chillax while I got ready all over again. I wanted to look nice for Be Our Guest! Finally we got back into the car and were leaving the Enclave at 3pm. Our first FP was ending at 3:55pm. I thought this would be fine but the traffic was terrible, it was going so slowly. Fridays and Saturdays were by far the worst traffic days, I suppose they are everywhere. But in the end it turned out the traffic was so slow because a car had stopped in the middle carriage way all of a sudden and then a van behind him started flashing huge arrow signs to signal people to go either side which was random. Further on there was also a crash on the opposite side so of course nosey people were slowing down to get a good look. So it appears people on both sides of the Atlantic do this!

By now it was 3.15pm and we were nowhere near Disney. Liam thought we’d make it for the FP but I rationalised it wasn’t even like we could just park up and go in, because we’d need to get a tram from the parking lot and then a monorail to the park. I thought I’d be brave and use MDE to change it. Took a while to work but eventually I got on and managed to change our Under the Sea FP for 10 something I think it was? That evening.

Finally, we got into MK for our very first taste of the magic!

It was so busy though, it was almost unbearable. I had wanted to wear my birthday badge to BOG but I’d forgotten it so Liam popped to City Hall to get me a replacement while I went into the Emporium to hang out in the air con. It was bedlam! Once he came to meet me we (read: I) decided it was time to finally get out Mickey hats. In 2012 I brought a Cheshire Cat one and wore it and my parents and Liam had laughed at me. Well I didn’t care and eventually this year Liam said he was going to get one! I resolved we HAD to get matching ones to make it doubly cute hehe. I had seen a nice looking Mickey and Minnie set in Epcot but couldn’t find them for ages here, eventually though, I spotted them and made a grab.

We headed to the till where Liam also decided to purchases a Magic Band. This was so unlike him, he never spends money on things like this, so I was very pleased to see him getting into the spirit of Disney! In fact, he’s coming round so much, that we’ve talked about our trip next year which he will have his birthday on and he couldn’t decide between Disney and Universal for his birthday! Eeep! Anyway… So he got a green magic band. We went outside and he put it on, and we put our hats on and we had a nice walk round stopping at Photopass spots as we went. It was too busy to do anything, Main St was rammed.

We headed over to Tomorrowland and did Monsters Inc Laugh Floor (that thing never had a queue) we basically got straight on. I really enjoy it though, I think it’s really funny. I love rides that give you a different experience every time. After that I was hungry as I hadn’t eaten lunch, and Liam had eaten in the hotel while I got ready. I didn’t want to spoil my dinner though so was in a bit of a quandary. I decided we’d pop into Cosmic Rays Starlight Café (this was on my must do list for the epic salad bar but I never came in for a burger ) and I grabbed a big drink for us to share and a side of Chilli Cheese Fries.

Once eaten we headed straight over into New Fantasyland, which we’d never been in. I wasn’t that impressed but Liam thought it was alright. It’s just I’d read so much hype online I was expecting something huge and spectacular but it didn’t even seem that big? We were just wandering round now. We had a FP coming up and dinner booked so it felt a bit like limbo. This is why I couldn’t do a holiday with tons and tons of ADRs, it felt a bit like we were trapped. I didn’t want to venture too far from Fantasyland.

Since we were in the area I went on a mission to find a dinglehopper hairbrush which I’d seen in WonderlandGirl's trip report. I went in a load of shops but more or less gave up. Eventually though, I found one in the shop next to the back of the castle, woo hoo! It’s the best thing ever.

Our Enchanted Tales with Belle FP was 7.15pm-8:15pm so we went on that as soon as it opened up. It was quite good. Only problem is we were last in a showing so in the first room I couldn’t see anything, so the mirror trick I didn’t see at all.

In the third room we went and sat down on the benches. I’ve moaned about this once before, but Disney really do need to clamp down on this behaviour – the flash photography was constant. You could tell the CMs were getting more and more irate each time they had to remind people. As an aside, another example I saw of something like this – the stage by the castle, one of the days we were walking through the castle and I saw 10s of people running around on this stage, I thought to myself ‘I didn’t know you were allowed there’. I soon realised, they weren’t. There was one lone female cast member at the gate shouting “You need to come away from there!” but being totally ignored. In my opinion if you’re going to blatantly flout the rules like that, ignore someone who works there and do what the hell you feel, well you shouldn’t be allowed to continue in the park. This behaviour ruins the experience of other guests and in the long run we’ll all be punished for it by them bringing in new rules and regulations!

Anyway, back to the here and now! Belle led a rousing rendition of Be Our Guest, the little girl who played the Beast was very cute. I was tearing up a little. It was an interesting experience, and despite the fact it was probably not designed for me I would definitely do it again. Oh, but one last rant… People with no awareness of your personal space, what’s all that about? Me and Liam were sat at the end of a row, I was at the very end. Next thing you know Parent #1 had plonked herself down next to me on the 1 inch of row that was leftover and was busy flash photographing her daughter… whatever, I get it, you want nice photos of your child but you don’t need to get so close to my personal space that I can see your breakfast! Liam kept nudging me and pointing to her as she swayed closer and closer in next to me… seriously, Liam is rarely even that close to me! I swear to you I’m not exaggerating one iota.

After that we exited and went to check in for BOG but we were ten minutes early. You’re only allowed to check in from 15 minutes before your ADR which means it was 7:40pm when we arrived with a ressie at 8:05pm. We went and sat on the fountain outside Gaston’s Tavern and had a chat and toilet breaks and relaxed a little while taking some photos. Once it was 7:50pm we headed back and checked in. A really sweet guy checked us in. I almost felt sorry for him as he looked a little nerdy, but I bet he’s loving life in Disney! I had a tendency to feel sorry for people, and then feel bad for feeling sorry for them in case they think I’m belittling them or something! Oh these internal struggles I have with myself!

We waited on the bridge then. We were waiting about 10 minutes I’d say. Our buzzer never went off, which was strange, our name was just called. A guy showed us in who was quite funny but at the same time it seemed like he’d just memorised a script because he was reeling it all off so quickly. He showed us round the restaurant and finally to our table. We were right slap bang in the middle of the Ballroom. My preference would have been by a window but I was just happy to be in the main room tbh. I had dreaded being sat in the Rose Garden room.

Our waitress came over and introduced herself. She was really nice and kept making jokes! We ordered our drinks, I suppose I had Pink Lemonade but I’ve no idea what Liam had. We then picked our starters. Liam was first and he stated his intention to order the French Onion soup and the waitress didn’t look happy! She informed Liam jokily that the Potato and Leek was far superior than the French Onion which was nice but not as good. Liam asked if she was sure the Pot & Leek was better and she even pointed at the guy next to us who was midway through a slurp and exclaimed “Ask him! He’s eating it right now!” which for some reason looking back I think is hilarious. We stuck to our guns though and he got the French Onion while I got the Potato on the promise we’d swap if he didn’t like his.

When it came it was GORGEOUS! I crave that soup all day long. We tried both, I liked mine way better. Liam claimed he liked the French Onion better but later said he’d been lying. He said there was too much cheese. You see, he’s not normal, he doesn’t like to gorge on cheese like the rest of us. While we ate our soups the bread rolls came out which were absolutely scrummy. The soup was by far my fav bit of the meal, spesh with the dippy bread roll.

Four our mains Liam ordered the steak, well done and I had the scallop and shrimp puff pastry. I had really been looking forward to mine but it was just ok. I wouldn’t have the fish dish again as there wasn’t really much to it and I didn’t think it taste of much, though the scallops were really nice everything else was just a bit boring. I tried a teeny bit of Liam’s truffle mayo and it was the best thing ever! I should have had steak! Liam’s steak was burnt though, I suppose that’s what you get for asking for it well done in Disney but he was worried it’d come out pink. In his own words, “That wasn’t well done, that was incinerated. Also the rest of it tasted salty, really, really salty. It was alright, not bad, but too salty.” Yep, there he goes with his salt rant again.

I had my birthday badge on so just before pudding she brought out a tiny bit of the grey stuff. I knew this would happen which is why I naughtily wore the badge but I didn’t know I’d get a card! That was a totally magical surprise! I was really happy about it because no I’ve got that little memory. It’s at home on the shelf. It’s signed by the Beast and Belle. Once the desert cart came over I chose the Lemon Meringue cupcake and Liam had the Triple Choc cupcake. He said the cupcake was great and mine was really, really nice. I love lemon meringue so this was amazing. During the meal the Beast had been coming in and out of his study, at one point he pretended to steal a desert cart hehe.

Once we got the bill it was $96 something and I needed to pay with a traveller’s cheque. I was a little worried she’d say they couldn’t accept them but of course it was fine! It’s really nice to pay with them in Disney as nobody bats an eyelid as they see them so often, whereas in the malls and Walmart a lot of the younger staff are confused by them and don’t understand how to put them through the till without asking older colleagues. In Walmart no one ever had a pen either! In Disney they know the procedure, know what they have to do, they get it all the time. We paid with a $100 TC and left a $20 tip, which would amount to more than 20% but it was a good dinner and she was a nice, friendly waitress.

We, of course, met the Beast after dinner and stopped for some photos.

Wishes was at 10pm that evening and after dinner it was EXTREMELY close to that time. We had to literally run through the park to the Wishes FP area, where we didn’t get a great spot due to being there later. We sat on the grass but the view was party obscured by a tree.

It was nice not to have to queue up to see Wishes but I didn’t like the view at all. I much prefer being dead centre with the castle rather than off to one side as I don’t think the fireworks have the same impact. I was disappointed as I didn’t get all the feelings I usually do when watching this. My favourite spot and the one we always go for is in line with the ice cream parlour on Main St and that’s the most amazing view ever.

After Wishes, the parade was on at 11pm and we decided to give it a miss tonight. The park was open until midnight and we wanted to do rides while it was quiet. We decided we’d probably see it on Sunday for my birthday. We headed to Tomorrowland to have a look at Space Mountain, we thought it would be empty because it was now about 10:20pm or so but it was 40 minutes and we didn’t want to waste that much time.

We went to the FP Kiosk next to Buzz Lightyear as I thought, oh, we’ve used all our FPs now so I added Buzz for in ten minutes time. I then realised I’d reorganised our Little Mermaid FP so I’d actually just replaced that, doh! During those ten minutes Liam popped to the toilet and by the time he’d gotten back it was time to go in so off we went. We were straight on the ride while the normal queue was just getting longer and longer.

Precision!

It kept breaking down at the end though, wasting valuable park time. About ten times a voice came over the tannoy saying ‘Please sit down’ so obviously someone kept standing up, which was infuriating! We were trapped on the ride for about 5 minutes with it stop starting and worst of all we could see the exit. Eventually we got off and decided as I’d replaced the Under the Sea FP we’d go over there. I checked the wait time on the Dibb and it was 5 minutes so off we went and got straight on.

It was kindof cute but a little tame for us! It was a very long ride. I was shocked we didn’t come out through a gift shop, and disappointed as I would have loved a Little Mermaid shop.

We thought tonight we’d give Splash Mountain a miss as we both had our big cameras and didn’t want to get them wet, but we’d go on Thunder. That said 20 minutes but it wasn’t that long, more like 15 or 10. We both thought it was really rough! It proper shook us about, even more so in the dark. Liam said he liked it but tbh I found it hard to enjoy because he kept squashing into me with his big fat butt and hip. It was agony, I kept wailing in pain every time we turned a corner. Liam says “It’s fun in the dark cause you can’t see where you’re going” LOL!

Then we had the bright idea to go BACK to Space Mountain. Seriously we did so much walking just going back and forth! We spied the end of the parade and weren’t that impressed but I’ll reserve judgement until I see it properly. I don’t know why they got rid of Spectromagic. Because the parade was over they had opened all the roads back up and we were able to cut straight across the Hub. You could tell the park was a lot quieter now as there weren’t so many people around. Space Mountain was a 15 minute wait.

At the top of the queue the guy at the top put us in the same car, but not the same car if you get what I mean. I was the back of the front and Liam was the front of the back. We knew we wouldn’t be in the picture together so we were really confused and stepped back saying, we’re not in the same car. He insisted we were in the same car, “They’re attached to eachother” I know, I’m not stupid, he obviously didn’t grasp that what we meant was that we would not be in a picture together and we were far apart so wouldn’t be able to talk to eachother. Either way, we ended up in those seats which was poop . This smashed me around aswell. This one actually quite hurt. None of the coasters at Disney seem to be smooth anymore, they all need a major refurb I reckons. In protest of the fact we weren’t together, I didn’t get the pics on my magic band lol.

We were so tired by this point and it was very nearly midnight. As we left the park I wanted to check if Mickey was still meeting people. The magician Mickey near the entrance. I’d been under the impression it would be the talking Mickey head all the time now so I was really wanting to try that out! I have zero desire to meet characters – I find it cringy and embarrassing at best. But to be able to talk to Mickey, that would be cool.

We literally got in at 11:59pm. We were some of the last people to get through the door. We stood patiently in the little queue. A few minutes later a big drama kicked off though. Two grown women came storming in, complaining, shouted and moaning to anyone that would listen that a girl outside was crying because she wasn’t allowed in after closing time. Then, despite the CMs having closed all the doors, they took it upon themselves to ignore this, walk out of the doors, go and TAKE this girl they’d never met from her mom and storm back through the doors in protest (again, an example of that behaviour Disney really need to stamp down on). I should add that obviously the mom gave permission for the girl to go with these strangers but Christ, that’s not good is it? Not in a million years would I allow my child to go off with a bunch of strangers, no matter how sympathetic they were!

For the rest of the queue they proceeded to berate Disney and moan about the service. They talked loudly for anyone that was within earshot about how much money you pay to go into a Disney park and then that you can’t even meet Mickey. Errr, HELLO! It’s after closing time! It’s not one rule for one and another rule for everyone else. I think everyone was of the same opinion as me and just wanted them to be quiet and stop ruining all of our experiences.

Eventually the mom was allowed in (I suspect this was more to do with the fact she was alone and clearly uncomfortable with two complete strangers than that Disney actually wanted to let her in). They all then proceeded to harass loudly. They even began talking to a CM guarding the door, explaining the whole situation, he said “I don’t know, I’m just back here.” But he was subtly laughing when they weren’t looking. I guess they get these sort of things thrown at them all the time. Hearing the daughter and the mom talk to each other was like a rehearsed script. The mom kept reiterating “This is our only day at Disney, this is the only 2 days I’ll see my daughter this year. Oh, and it’s also her birthday.” The strangers than proceeded to ask the girl “Oh my god it’s your birthday too?!” To which she replied “Well no actually is was my birthday last Thursday a week ago.” Or some such rubbish. Yep, I devoted 3 whole paragraphs to this situation but it was such a farce. The park closes when it closes or there wouldn’t be such thing as a closing time would there?

Finally we got into the room with Mickey and I was really disappointed to see it wasn’t talking Mickey after all. What followed was the most cringe worthy experience of my life. It was even worse for Liam. He didn’t want the picture at all, I’d actually forced him to come in! He said he would hold his camera and take a picture of me, but the CM there offered to take his camera for him so he was lumped into the picture too haha. I had no idea what to say or do so I muttered “Mickey, I’m so tired.” Posed for an awkward snap and got out of there QUICK!

You can almost see the awkwardness

Luckily I don’t think we were the only awkward people as a lot of the others before us had looked awkward too. A lot of men looks awkward and surprisingly, most of the kids looked like they didn’t want to be there either!

We got out, hopped on a monorail pretty much straight away. It was rammed though so we were squashed up like sardines. We ran for a tram and jumped on the first one that got there. Finally we were back at the car at 12.45am. We were back home and asleep at 1:30am… Good job it wasn’t an early start tomorrow!

Tomorrow… Shopping, Mardi Gras and Citywalk!

Fab instalment
My OH gets awkward when meeting 'face' characters, but if they're top to toe in costume then it's different, especially if it's Stitch- his favourite!
Thanks for sharing

It was so awks, for both of us . I'm so shy I don't know what to do for the best! I want to go to CRT next year and I'm adamant I want to meet Rapunzel but I don't know what I'll say . I bet Stitch is nice and cuddly though!

Another great day!
ERMAGOD! I love your dinglehopper! I must have one!
I totally agree about that soup! Our waitress also recommended it to us last year! How funny!
Ugh that carry on with meeting Mickey is ridiculous. So infuriating when adults behave like that. Ridiculous! I would have them removed from the park.
Long, but super fun day!

The Dinglehopper is actually amazing, so glad I read the trippy where I saw it before I went. I think it was wonderlandgirl's trippy, I think that's her dibb name? She's still writing it now.
The soup was amazing, I'm actually obsessed with it now. We went to France last month and I had my in laws bring home a load of proper French potato and leek soup haha!
I saw so many people behaving like that, it's really disappointing. Wish the cast members had more power to truely do something about it.
