Narcoossee's

Narcoossee's

We were looking forward to our first signature dining experience! We were shown to a table with a view out of the window and of Cinderella Castle in the distance - awesome. I had read you can watch Wishes from this restaurant so was glad of the view!

As with all restaurants we dined at, we were asked if we were on a dining plan, and when we said "deluxe" where told what we were entitled to. I'm sure I had read somewhere (can't remember where now) that some things are off the menu, but our server said everything was available for the picking!

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person. Fountain drinks are generally refillable. Signature restaurants are 2 credits per person.

By now, Liam was feeling very hungry, and he was grateful for the bread and butter that was placed on the table! The air conditioning was also very cold in Narcoossee's and he was complaining about it. I suggested that he always bring out his jacket to cover up with when we go out in the evenings. I think it was probably a combo of tiredness and hunger for him, as it was one of the only times he griped about air con.

After scanning the menu and a few suggestions from the waitress (I did love that in signature restaurants the servers were very knowledgeable about the dishes available) we made our decision.

There wasn't really anything that took Liam's fancy, so we just ordered a salad from the appetizer section to make up the third app!

Appetizers…

Me: Artisanal Cheeses - Five tasting portions from around the world with accompaniments($18)

Him: Barbecue Grilled Shrimp and Grits - Wild Florida shrimp with Budgie's barbecue sauce, low country grits, cherrywood-smoked bacon and pickled greet tomato chow-chow ($17)

The Boy: Peach Orchard Salad - Regier Family Farm tree-ripened white peaches, Farmer Jones greens, sweet and salty hazelnuts, Manchego cheese and elderflower-chardonnay vinaigrette ($13)

Our first experience of signature dining was a great one, and for me personally, this was one of my favourites of the whole holiday. Our waitress was really attentive, and the food was all beautifully presented!

My Artisanal Cheese Selection had the following cheeses: Cowgirl Creamery's Mt Tam; Tête de Moine; Wyngaard Chèvré Affine, Petite Agour and Cashel Blue. I was given a little card to tell me more about each cheese, which I think was a nice touch. I can't quite remember all the accompaniments, but from the photo I can tell you that there was pickle, fig and some crackers. I'm sure one was honey and the other may have been a chilli dip, I think the one in the middle was either pumpkin or sunflower seeds.

I'm not a fan of blue cheese at all, but all the others were really good.

Once Liam saw Steve's Barbecue Grilled Shrimp and Grits appetizer, he decided he quite liked the idea of eating shrimp, so that went to him! He did kindly leave the grits for us to eat, which were creamy and full of flavour, and Steve said much better than breakfast grits he'd had in the past! The prawns had a bit of a kick to them!

And finally, the appetizer that Steve ended up eating by default - the Peach Orchard Salad which was refreshing and flavourful. Had I not had the cheese plate, it's what I would have chosen.

We all liked the slower pace of signature dining, and it meant we didn't feel rushed. Liam tends to come along for the ride in posh restaurants haha, but even he enjoyed each of the signatures! Steve and I are a bit foodie when it comes to eating out - we've got our eye on Victoria and Albert's one year - perhaps when the boy has flown the nest!

Entrées…

Me: Grilled 7 Ounce Filet Mignon - Boniato-Idaho creamed potatoes with Farmer Jones romano beans, and herbed cabernet-oxtail reduction. Added butter-poached Canadian Waters Lobster Tail ($72)

Him: Two-Pound Steamed Maine Lobster - Fallen corn soufflé with malted popcorn sauce and buttered broccolini. ($74)

The Boy: 12oz Black Angus New York Strip Steak - roasted young potatoes, grilled cipollini onions, applewood-smoked bacon, and a Famer lee Jones organic Brussels sprout petals, with salsa verde ($45)
My filet steak was good! My lobster tail was good! The presentation was marvellous, and what a treat!

Steve enjoyed his lobster, which, if I recall he doubled up. It was the first time he'd had lobster. He said it felt like there was something missing.

Liam switched out all the sides that originally came with his steak for regular mash and beans, which was no extra. He couldn't quite finish it, so that job when to Steve!

Desserts…

Me: Almond-Crusted Cheesecake - with Lambert cherry sauce ($11)

Him: Pistachio Gelato - with almond nougat ($10)

The Boy: Finding Nemo Cupcake - from the kid's menu! ($5)

The waitress told us that the Almond-Crusted Cheesecake was the best and most popular dessert on the menu, so naturally I had to have that one! And she wasn't wrong - it was delicious. You know when you just don't want a dessert to end? That!

Again, Steve enjoyed his dessert - I was quite surprised he went for something so simple, but pistachio ice-cream is a lovely flavour.

Liam was well and truly stuffed by this point, and said he didn't want a dessert - the waitress said to leave it with her, and she brought him out a Finding Nemo Cupcake - and he suddenly wasn't so full!

Cape May Café

Cape May Café

This was the first time we had been to Cape May Café, and it was a character breakfast with Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. Character interaction was quite quick here, but we got our photos and autographs.

Not only did we have a horrid journey to the restaurant, but we also had a less than enthusiastic server, and the buffet seemed to be on a wind down as well, so all in all, our experience here was not a particularly good one. It felt like she was doing us a favour by serving us, and she kept us waiting ages for refills and for the bill at the end of the meal. To that end, she got a $10 tip which was under the 18% suggested. We were going to say something to the front desk about her, but by the end, we just wanted to leave!

However, I will go through the buffet and tell you about some of the breakfast items on it… a selection of cold meats, cheeses and smoked salmon, as well as fruit, granola and yoghurt. Your usual baked goods and pastries, as well as French toast with toppings like whipped cream, bananas and chocolate chips. Mickey waffles are a staple at probably every Disney breakfast, as are things like bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausages and breakfast potatoes. There was also a scrambled egg mixed with chorizo which was quite nice.

When it comes to a buffet restaurant on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan, you are entitled to one full buffet and one non-alcoholic beverage for one credit per person.

Kouzzina by Cat Cora

Kouzzina by Cat Cora

I was excited about visiting this restaurant because of it serving Greek cuisine. I'm half Greek-Cypriot so I was interested to see what was on the menu, and it felt like a really different place to be dining at Disney! I'll start off by saying we had wonderful service and a really tasty dinner here, we would come again without doubt, but, it is closing at the end of September! Such a shame!

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan and table service restaurants, you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

We were given some bread, olive oil and a few olives to start with. Our waitress did tell us what the olive oils were, but I didn't make a note I'm afraid. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested various dishes, which I always found a really nice touch, as we experience this at several signature restaurants too.

Appetizers…

Me: Goat Cheese Sto Fourno - baked goat cheese, pequillo peppers, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, and Greek olive oil ($8.49)

Him: Kouzzina Spreads - chickpea hummus, charred eggplant spread, and tzatziki with warm pita ($9.99)

The Boy: Shrimp with Garlic and Herbs - served over warm spiced hummus and Peppadew relish ($13.99)

There were lots of tasty sounding appetizer options, and what would have been great would have been a meze menu as well as this a la carte one. I don't know why I went for the goats cheese - quite a simple, almost boring dish compared with some of the others. I must have been so indecisive (which is usually the case when I'm presented with a menu!) Looking back at the menu, I wished I'd tried the Avgolemono (an egg-lemon soup) to see how it compared with mine!

We actually ended up sharing all the appetizers, so it ended up being a bit of a meze starter for us. Steve had picked out the trio of dips - hummus, tzatziki and eggplant, and they were all good. Although, I wasn't over keen on the hummus, that said, I'm pretty fussy when it comes to that chickpea dip!

I was very impressed with some of the choices Liam made on this trip - he's definitely got a lot braver with trying new things than last year when all he seemed to do was eat hamburgers! He nommed up the shrimp, and only just about let Steve and I share one of them!

Entrées…

Me: Create-Your-Own Kouzzina Trio - choice of three tasting portions. Choose from char-grilled lamb burger with tzatziki, mini pastitsio, cinnamon stewed chicken, oven-baked gigantes beans, sautéed Brussels sprouts with brown butter vinaigrette, capers and cheese, or Kouzzina garlic-rosemary potatoes. ($23.99)

Him: Slow-Cooked Lamb Shank - served with Kouzzina potatoes. ($29.99)

The Boy: Pastitsio - Greek-style lasagna with pasta, cinnamon-stewed meat sauce and Greek cheese béchamel ($21.99)

I decided on the trio as it was the best way to sample a few different things. The potatoes were really flavourful and the burger too, but my favourite was the pastitsio, and I had wished I'd ordered a full portion of that instead! My reasoning that I didn't was because I can make it at any time at home - it's one of my favourite Greek dishes.

Steve chose the lamb shank, which he really enjoyed. It was soft and tender and just fell off the bone. He got loads of potatoes with his dish - I could have picked something else on my trio and just nicked a couple of his!

After I explained to Liam that pastitsio is what the Greeks called my macaroni pie, he decided that would be what he'd have for his dinner. The portion was huge - my photo really doesn't do the dish that it came in any justice. He couldn't finish his main meal, but I was more than happy to tuck into it - my dinner was quite small in the sampler compared with my two boys, and I don't like seeing good food go to waste!

It was creamy, cinnamony, the right amount of pasta to meat ratio, and the creamy topping was perfect too. I was really impressed, and again, I have to say I'm gutted that this restaurant is closing!

Desserts…

Me: Loukoumades - freshly made Greek doughnuts drizzled with warm honey and cinnamon ($7.49)

Him: Galaktoboureko - semolina custard in baked phyllo ($7.99)

The Boy: Chocolate Budino Cake - warm molten chocolate with seasonal sorbet ($8.49)

After the very pleasing main course, my loukoumades were a bit of a let down - not because they were bad, but because I'm so used to a certain flavour and texture of them, that these ones just tasted weird. It may well have been the honey syrup that they poured over them. They were quite dry, and I asked if I could have a little more syrup, but she gave me straight up honey, which wasn't very pleasant. A shame, I know that loukoumades are awesome!

The portion was really generous, but after eating one or two, I couldn't manage anymore because of the flavour. The waitress thought I was stuffed and brought me a take-out box - I didn't have the heart to say that they were a bit rank!

Steve's Greek dessert was delicious - not quite the same taste as in a Greek cake shop, but damn close. A huge slice, and big enough for two to share.

Liam devoured his chocolate cake which was oozing with dark chocolate. Went really well with the sorbet, which I think was cherry.
