Travel Day
We had booked into the Holiday Inn at Glasgow Airport to start our holiday off early. We had dinner at the Wetherspoons landside at the airport as we'd tried the restaurant in the hotel a few years ago and found it very expensive.
I had the Highland Burger which was a burger with haggis and whisky sauce and Marie had the Pulled Pork Sandwich. They didn't give me my whisky sauce so it was a bit dry but otherwise ok. It came with onion rings which were awful though. It also came with lettuce and tomato on it which you can see I took off. Doesn't go with haggis. Marie said hers was nice. The Highland Burger The Pulled Pork Sandwich We had bought Krispy Kremes to have for dessert and an extra to have for breakfast before we left the hotel in the morning. No photos of those though as they weren't pretty by the time we got them to the hotel! Tasted good though. Proper Breakfast on travel day was at the Beardmore. We both had the Scottish breakfast. It was ok. No photos unfortunately. On the flight we got the usual sour cream pretzels with a drink. PE was great as the staff were constantly coming round with drinks. Dinner was a choice of chicken, beef or a leek pasta. By the time they got to us there was no chicken left. I chose the beef and Marie the pasta. You got a little salad with a mustard dressing, cheese and crackers and an apple cinammon sponge for dessert. The beef was served with mash and cabbage and it was in a tomato sauce. It was really nice and I ate it all. Marie said the pasta was ok but did eat it all. The apple cake was nice and moist. Later they brought us a Fab ice lolly and then just before landing a cheese and tomato finger sandwich (lovely) and a caramel shortcake. Overall I really enjoyed the plane food. No photos. On arrival at CBR we went straight to OPR for food having been delayed 3 hours. I chose my first disney burger of the holiday! I really like Disney burgers and I did enjoy this but you know what it's like on travel day when you're tired. Marie had the chilli dog. She also enjoyed it. For dessert we chose muffins to have for breakfast the following morning and we got bottles of water plus a drink in our refillable mugs. Day One
First breakfast was a chocolate chip muffin that we'd got as dessert the day before as we were up at stupid o'clock and knew we'd need something to keep us going until proper breakfast. It was a nice muffin, not too dry.
Choc Chip Muffin Proper breakfast was an early 8.05am ADR at Tusker House. We arrived at the entrance to the park around 7.45am but they didn't start letting people in until 8am so it was straight to the restaurant to check in. We only had one plate this time as we filled up really quickly. Sausage, bacon, ham & cheese frittata and beef bobitie. Also tatter tots, a Mickey waffle and donut holes (Krispy Kreme!). We also had a glass of the Jungle Juice which is fab. Great character interaction as usual. I got a hug from Daisy as she noticed my birthday badge! Our server was nice but seemed a bit over stretched. We had decided to charge tips to the room so this was our first experience of it. It seems that if you don't leave cash or some other form of payment then they put two & two together and charge it to your room. Fairly straightforward. My breakfast plate Jungle Juice The plan for lunch was to be some snacks around AK including the jalapeno cheese stuffed pretzel (which we never got ) and chicken fried rice however it was peeing it down all morning and we had done all the rides we wanted to by 11am. we decided to leave the park and head to DTD intending to get something at Wolfgang Puck's Express or Earl of Sandwich. Of course it was Saturday so DTD was heaving. Armed with my new Landry's Select card we headed to Rainforest Cafe instead and paid OOP for a couple of burgers. I got the Rainforest Burger which is a cheeseburger with an onion ring and the usual lettuce, tomato and pickle. Marie got the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger which is the same but with BBQ sauce. Lovely burgers at RFC. After having one last trip it's now on Marie's must-do list. The bill came to about $40 but left $50 as I didn't have change. Our server was good, very professional and did her job well. Rainforest Burger BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger Dinner was the main event. We had an ADR for Narcoossee's which was a new one for us. Visitor parking at the Grand Floridian is over at the villas so it was a bit of a walk but we arrived just at our ADR time and so were seated very quickly. Again our server was very professional and knowledgeable about the dishes. Marie wanted lobster but admitted she'd never had it before so the server suggested the surf & turf - either the New York Strip or the Filet Mignon plus lobster tail. We both ended up getting that with the filet. Mine was butter poached and Marie's steamed. She explained how the steamed was firmer and we may prefer that as we like our steak well done. I actually preferred the butter poached. It came with mashed potato and carrots. You get sour dough bread first with unsalted butter that they sprinkle salt onto which was just ok. It was nice to try the lobster but in hindsight it made the meal too big and we struggled a bit. After a short pause we gave dessert an attempt. Marie had the Mango Sorbet which she said was really nice. I had the Coconut and Chocolate Creme Brűlée. It was nice but I didn't think the flavour was as nice as the maple one in Le Cellier. Overall a lovely meal and I'd definitely go back next trip if we get free DDP especially as our parents are coming. I think my Dad would love the whole "choose anything on the menu and it's free"! It was also our most expensive with the entree's being $71 before tax. The tip alone for two of is was $35 (20%). That's the great thing about free dining though! Day Two
Breakfast today was an early ADR, 8.10am, at Crystal Palace. We didn't have any pre breakfast food so it was straight up, dressed and out. We checked in with the Cast Member at the entrance to the park at around 7.35am but they didn't start letting people in until 7.45am. We headed straight for CP as Main St wasn't empty as everyone had gotten in at the same time so had all crowded in Main St. We were second to check in though which meant we got taken to our table fairly early. We were served by Kip who was good but did ignore us for a while when we were ready for our check.
I had a savoury plate and a sweet plate this time rather than piling it all into one! I had breakfast pizza, breakfast potatoes, potato casserole, corn beef hash, bacon, egg, sausage and a lovely bacon and cheese biscuit. It was all really nice and I felt enjoyed this more than Tusker House and more than I had previously enjoyed CP. I think it was probably because I chose some items I wouldn't normally. I then had the breakfast lasagne, puffed french toast and a Danish pastry. They were all nice but I was a bit full by then. My savoury plate My "dessert" plate Mid-morning we wanted a drink so I suggested a LeFou's Brew as we'd never tried it before and we were in the area. I know this gets compared to Butterbeer and I enjoyed both of them. I don't tend to get the frozen Butterbeer so the slush factor made it different enough for me. LeFou's Brew Gaston's Tavern Menu Lunch was our Be Our Guest FP+. We both had the Croque Monsieur and for dessert I had the Masters Cupcake and Marie the Chocolate Cream Puff. We sat in the study(?) which was very dark. I didn't really rate the croque monsieur but Marie really enjoyed it. I hadn't really been blown away by the BOG menu but we really wanted to see inside and thought a CS credit was better to waste than a TS. The masters cupcake was really nice though. Marie didn't enjoy the chocolate cream puff but she feels US chocolate is too bitter. Croque Monsieur Our desserts Later while waiting for the parade (we had FP+ this as we hadn't seen it before) we got a Dole Whip. Marie got pineapple with pineapple and I got a pineapple/vanilla swirl with pineapple juice. Love Dole Whip on a hot day! Dole Whip Dinner was one of our favourites, Le Cellier. As I said we're creatures of habit so these pictures will be a bit boring for anyone who's read previous dining reports! We even laughed with our server that we were getting what we always got! Firstly they bring you bread. This is a major reason for going to Le Cellier - the pretzel breadsticks. It's amazing! They'll bring you just pretzel bread if you want but that's a mistake as there's no way you'd have room for anything else after you'd eaten your way through two or three of those! This is one of the few places that does the Minute Maid Pomegranate Light Lemonade so I got that while I could. For main we both chose the filet mignon with wild mushroom risotto and white truffle sauce. I'd read on the Disney Food Blog that they'd changed the risotto to a pea risotto but obviously this was either temporary or an experiment or something because it was the normal filet on the menu. As usual it was amazing! For dessert all we could manage was the Maple Creme Brűlée. This was much nicer than the Narcoossee's one. Our server was professional and attentive without being overbearing. All in all another win for Le Cellier and it continues to be a must-do for us. Day three
Breakfast was our third and final character meal. We had decided late on that we fancied Akershus and after checking the website daily, sometimes several times a day we managed to get one for 8.25am on our first Epcot day. We arrived early and got seated early. They serve the food family style here although there's also a cold buffet. The platters are filled with bacon, sausage, scrambled egg and breakfast potatoes. I love the potatoes! They're done in a creamy cheesey sauce like a potato casserole. The other great thing about Akershus is the hot Norwegian waiters. There was one in particular who seemed to just bring the food but didn't speak. Like they knew he was eye candy! Character interaction here is very good. They seem to sense how much interaction you want and we just got a little bit of chat, a photo then they moved on.
Breakfast platter No photos of the cold buffet I'm afraid but I think I just got some cheese slices and a couple of pastries. Lunch was Beaches & Cream which we had planned for last trip but didn't manage. It's just a short walk through the International Gateway in World Showcase but all the way around we were tempted by the smells from the F&W booths! Hopefully on our next Epcot day! At B&C I had another burger. Now that really isn't all I eat but to be fair it was part of the reason I wanted to go so I couldn't not have it! Marie was not keen to have another burger so went with the hotdog instead which you could add toppings to. She chose chilli - that she could eat all day! We also had a milk shake - Marie mint choc chip and I had butter pecan. These were amazing but really filling so we left B&C bursting. She offered us a "to go" cup for our milkshake and if I'd known that earlier I wouldn't have tried to drink so much in the restaurant! Really nice and I would go again. Beaches & Cream menu Milkshakes Angus Beef Burger Beaches Hot Dog with chilli It was day three so we were pretty tired and sore by now. Dinner therefore was pizza from the food court. You can get a large pizza for two CS credits plus 2 drinks and 2 desserts. These are seriously huge and would feed 3-4 easily. Considering how small the single pizzas are it doesn't really make sense but great if you're a family of four trying to make best use of your dining plan. It was a nice pizza but we only managed 2 1/2 slices each. We got pastries for dessert to have for breakfast the next day. What we actually had for dessert was Oreo cookies and cream pie. I know it seems greedy buying one of these when we have DDP however we just love this since we first tried it years ago in Denny's! We discovered they sell it in Walmart so buy one every trip! Large cheese pizza Oreo cookies and cream pie I also bought a peanut butter crunch cookie from Karamel Kuche but don't have a photo as it didn't travel well in the heat! I do have a picture of the display in Karamel Kuche though! Credits used - Akershus - 2 TS Pizza - 2 CS Karamel Kuche - 1 snack Beaches & Cream - paid OOP. Edited at 10:24 AM. |

Day four
This was the day we had planned to go to Celebration in the morning as Marie wanted to go to the dog bakery, Woofgang Bakery. The original plan had been to have breakfast at Market St Cafe however we had gotten pastries the night before as desserts so had them first. Mine was a chocolate croissant and Marie's was a cinnamon roll. Both were nice. Probably better fresh but still enjoyable the next day. We ended up not getting anything at Celebration as we weren't hungry.
Chocolate Croissant Cinnamon Roll Lunch was the hotel food court, Old Port Royale, after spending an hour at the pool. I had the Catch of the Day sandwich which was fish with some kind of "slaw". It was nice for a change. Marie had the burger. She said it was a bit dry. For dessert we got more pastries for breakfast the next morning. Catch of the Day Sandwich Don't have a picture of Marie's burger but it's be the same as the one I had the other day! Dinner was our Fantasmic dining package at Hollywood and Vine. I know a lot of people don't like it here but we've always enjoyed it. First up I got some salad with coleslaw and ranch dressing. I couldn't help myself and picked up some pork, brown rice and Mac & cheese with lobster and shrimp. Fish does not go with Mac & cheese! Next round I got more rice and pork plus mashed potato, roast beef and chicken with ranch dressing or something. I enjoyed it but the pork was particularly nice. Dessert I picked up a mixture of things including chocolate covered strawberries, key lime tart, banana cream puff and a coconut macaroon. There was also a "7 layer bar" which was probably the best thing. Marie had a selection of the above. In the end we didn't get to Fantasmic. It was peeing it down and our feet were sodden and we just couldn't bear the thought of another 2 hours waiting until it was time for Fantasmic. We didn't get to see it at all this trip, mainly because of the weather. Going to Youtube it one night! Day five
Breakfast was pastries saved from dessert the previous day again, the same ones as yesterday so no new pictures. We did this a lot.
Lunch was Liberty Tree Tavern. We've been here many times for dinner with the set menu but never for lunch. We both chose the Patriots Feast which was Turkey, stuffing, mash and veg with gravy. It was nice but too much for lunch and we struggled to finish. We did leave a little room for dessert and both chose the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake. This was a big disappointment. We both thought it was a cake but it turned out to be some kind of chewy biscuit or something. Not a fan. This is one of the places that does the pomegranate lemonade though. Patriot's Feast Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake Dinner was Wolfgang Puck's Express which we'd been looking forward too. Unfortunately another disappointment. I ordered the chicken Alfredo which had big slices of garlic in it that I had to pick out. It tasted nice enough but just not great. It comes with peas but I asked for it without because who has peas in their Alfredo pasta? Marie had spaghetti bolognese which came with broccoli of all things! She said it was ok. We got a side of fries which arrived as soon as we sat down. They were kind of luke warm and not the best fries we've had. Dessert was a cookie as we still had Oreo pie! Cavatappi Chicken Alfredo Spaghetti Bolognese Fries Snacks We had another Le Fous Brew and also shared a Mickey pretzel. Marie didn't enjoy it but I thought it was ok. Later we got a Starbucks latte. I got a maple one which was far too sweet and I couldn't drink it. Day six
This was the day we checked in to RPR so off DDP for a couple of days. For breakfast we had some donut holes with plans to grab something in the parks later. We checked in to RPR about 8.30am and our room was ready thank goodness. We avoided Diagon Alley and went straight to Hogsmeade and FJ and by the time we came off we were hungry so went to the Three Broomsticks. We both had the pancake breakfast which ironically would have been nicer without the pancakes. They were ok but a bit soggy even without the maple syrup. The rest was nice though, even the bacon and I normally don't like American bacon.
Pancake breakfast Lunch was in the Simpsons area as we'd never been before. This area is a bit of a shambles. You have to queue to get to a point where a cm allows you to go ahead to order your food. There are loads of counters serving different food and you have to go to each one individually. They then show you to a table. Marie and I wanted different things so I had to stand and wait on her before I could get a table. I got Chicken Thumbs with Tater Tots which are essentially chicken tenders. These were ok but I'd rather have had fries. Marie had a chilli dog which came with coleslaw on the top too. She said it was ok but the coleslaw didn't go with the chilli. I had a taste of the hot dog and it was disgusting. I'm not really a fan of the food at Universal and this didn't help change my mind. Chicken Thumbs with Tater Tots Chilli Hot Dog We also had the obligatory Butterbeer. Dinner was Margaritaville. We're not usually in Universal at dinner time so had never eaten at Citywalk before. The theming here is great. The waitress asked we wanted any appetisers and being free from DDP for a night we decided to go for it and get nachos. The size of these was enormous! If we'd seen them first we'd never have ordered them. We barely made a dent before deciding to give up so we'd manage our main courses! Marie really enjoyed these but I thought they were just ok. I had fish tacos for something different. These were pieces of battered fish in a soft tortilla with avocado and some kind of "slaw". They came with rice and black beans. They were nice but didn't blow me away. Marie had fried chicken which she said was ok but the chicken had a "slimy" texture. Marie had a blueberry pomegranate margarita and I had a virgin pińa colada. Overall it was ok but I wouldn't rush back. Virgin pina colada Blueberry Pomegranate Margarita Nachos before Nachos when we were done! Fish Tacos Fried chicken No dessert as we were too full. On the way back to the hotel we got a minibon each for breakfast and some cinammon balls with frosting dip for later though. Edited at 08:57 AM. |
