TooJays

So I'm continuing the theme of places not often mentioned on the Dibb. I'll say the next bit quietly, but my DH loves following the DisUnplugged and has even met Pete Werner & co in London a year or so ago and they often talk about going to TooJays so he really wanted to try it for himself.

Now here's a bit about the place, taken from their website

"TooJay’s began as a modest New York Style delicatessen on the Island of Palm Beach in the Spring of 1981. Started by Jay Brown and Mark Jay Katzenberg; they used the common portion of both of their names to come up with the moniker TooJay’s Gourmet Deli... There are currently 25 locations across Florida..With numerous “Best Of” awards TooJay’s prides itself on serving generous portions of high quality items in a casual and lively atmosphere with friendly service. Open seven days a week (with the exception of Downtown Tampa) for breakfast, lunch and dinner."

We had signed up to the club and I had a buy one entree get one entree free coupon which was on my phone, good for lunch or dinner. We went at lunchtime and there were queues out the door, only Floridians (no tourists). It's opposite Roy's and seasons 52 on restaurant row in Sandlake. The signs were good, and I really like the fact that the menu is different and offers so many options.

Here's the food we had:

Blintzes $7.89
Two homemade crepes filled with sweet cheese and grilled to order. Served with fruit topping (think this is cherry) and sour cream.

Omelette $7.89
Made with four eggs and served with French fries. Choose any three ingredients and toast or bagel. Think it's mushroom, spinach and avocado...despite the fact this looks good, it didn't wow me unfortunately

Nova Salmon on A Bagel $9.49
Freshly sliced smoked salmon served on a bagel with cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and fresh fruit. The smoked salmon here was outstanding if you like that sort of thing

And the fruit plate and yoghurt, from the Lighter Options menu
California Fruit Salad $8.49
Fresh cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, red grapes and strawberries topped with raisins and toasted almonds. Served with a side of dairy fresh vanilla yogurt.

Now as it was buy one get one free, we were feeling a bit guilty that our food bill wasn't going to be even $20, so we ordered a chocolate muffin and a cinammon roll and a plain bagel from the take away counter just to add another $10 to the bill, and I'm pretty sure we took this away with us

Chocolate muffin (no idea why there's butter on the plate too?!)

Cinammon roll

Bagel and cream cheese

This place is definitely worth a visit if you like deli-style food, it is packed to the rafters, spans all ages, and is home-style comfort at it's best.

Those flapjacks - so bad but so so good!
Yes it was our first visit, we had planned to go when we were in Las Vegas but never made it as I had too many coupons to use for breakfast elsewhere and Las Vegas is one place where we really like some of the buffet options. Yes the flapjack was bad, not helped by the ice cream I added to it for good measure

Some great looking food there Ruth - I especially liked the look of the TooJays omelette, disappointing it didn't live up to its appearance
