[The Pumpkins Dine Around Disney 2014] Day 11 – Festival of Fantasy

The Pumpkins Dine Around Disney 2014 Trip Report Index! (And here is the Pre-Trip Report!)

Day 11: Festival of Fantasy
Magic Kingdom; Cinderella's Royal Table (Character Breakfast); California Grill (Signature Dining); Wishes
August 24th, 2014

Our day started with a drive to Disney's Contemporary Resort. Since we would be coming back here in the evening, we wanted to valet park for the day. Yes, we could have done it for free by just parking and walking to the hotel, but since I was having trouble walking, I wanted to make everything as easy and pain free as possible.

We were having breakfast at Cinderella Royal Table, and so, took the monorail to Magic Kingdom. I love the monorail journey as the scenery is awesome to look at!

By now I was hobbling along, so Steve went ahead to the Castle to let them know we were on our way – we didn't want to miss the reservation, and be charged for it! They couldn't seat us as we weren't a full party, but eventually I hobbled in.

The boys had a photo with Cinderella, before we were called for our reservation.

I booked Cinderella's Royal Table because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about! We were shown to our table and given a menu. The restaurant was fairly busy, and it was lovely being inside the castle.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan and breakfast at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) Signature restaurants are 2 credits per person.

There is just one appetizer at CRT, which is a Pastry Plate with a selection of pastries - including Mickey Mouse shaped muffins.

I've mentioned before how we were pretty much done with breakfasts on the dining plan! Looking at the menu, it was very decadent, and fit for a princess or prince! But not for us at that time of the morning.

Entrées…

Me: Healthy Choice – Scrambled egg whites, hot ten-grain cereal, Greek yogurt topped with castle-made granola, no sugar added walnut-sunflower bread, and fresh fruit.

Him: Caramel Apple Stuffed French Toast – Decadent French toast stuffed with sweet cream cheese, baked with caramel apples, and drizzled with a Calvados caramel sauce.

The Boy: Traditional Breakfast – scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and potatoes

A holiday so far of food indulgence meant I went for something lighter with the healthy choice breakfast. All the elements came served on a big plate with recesses for all the components. I wasn't fan of the hot cereal, but I enjoyed everything else.

Steve had the French toast, which was rich and very yummy.

Liam is better suited to a buffet style breakfast, as he can pick and choose what he likes. He doesn't like eggs, and didn't want bacon either, so the waitress switched them out for some French toast sticks instead. He ate it all, so I know it was good!

During breakfast, the Princesses walked from table to table for autographs and photo ops. Our Princesses were Snow White, Aurora, Ariel and Jasmine. We've not met Princess Jasmine before, so that was pretty cool – she was also the most awesome of the Princesses we met!

Once we'd finished breakfast, we paid our bill (tip is included) and went on our merry way for a day at Magic Kingdom. I'm glad we got to experience Cinderella's Royal Table, but would unlikely do it again. Not because it was expensive – dining in Disney is expensive (although, we were on the dining plan) but because, now that it's done, there isn't a need to do it again. We weren't blown away by the food, and since I don't have young children, meeting the Princesses isn't the be all and end all for us as a family! But dining in Cinderella Castle is magical and I'm glad we've done that!

Bill Total: $153.33 (3 Credits) {Tip: $0 – inc.}

We walked around to the wishing well, (to make a wish of course!) and then decided to head round the back to Tomorrowland for an upcoming FastPass+. On the way we stopped to meet Merida, who was just brilliant to meet (and gorgeous too!)

There was barely a line for her, so we didn't have to wait too long. I really loved the castle grounds area for Merida, and it was quite shady too! Always a winner in that Orlando sunshine!

As we continued to Tomorrowland, we saw Alice and the White Rabbit, no doubt on their way back to their meet and greet.

We were still early for our FP+ so went up to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover, which is actually one of my personal favourites! You think you're just going to go on a really slow ride around, but it moves at a fair speed and you get to see a unique view of the park!

It was very weird seeing Astro Oribiter without the huge balls that are planets, which were taken down for maintenance on the ride. I always manage to get a photo of Liam just as we pass the Space Mountain sign as well – has to be our "thing" now that I've got 3 photos like that!

Once off the People Mover, we went to join the FP+ line for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, which was a fun ride as always, and one in which I always do rubbish on, unlike Steve and Liam, for which it is serious business!

I love the Magic Bands as they know to assign your ride photos to your Memory Maker account without you having to do a thing!

We then went onto the Carousel of Progress, which was just about to start as we came out of Buzz Lightyear. It's great for getting out of the scorching heat, and it's a nostalgic attraction. We always come out singing "it's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day…"

We saw Stitch across the way, but didn't line up to meet him, instead we walked around to Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. This was very funny and well worth going in to!

After we came out of Monsters Inc., I could hear the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party, so we made a move back to into the hub of Main Street USA, (but not before a couple of PhotoPass photos, a couple of Cinderella Castle from a different view point, and the Mickey and Minnie topiaries) to watch this parade.

What I love about this parade is the fact that the floats stop, the characters get off the floats and you can dance around in the street with them! Lots of fun!

I'm just going to share some of the photos I took, as there is not much more to say about it!

Someone lost their very expensive balloons! Tie them to your wrist people!

We made our way into Adventureland to go on Pirates of the Caribbean (another FP+), but of course, stopping on the way for photos. I LOVE Adventureland, the themeing here is awesome, and it's lush with lots of greenery, flowers and trees. Definitely one of my favourite parts of Magic Kingdom.

We joined the FP+ line for PotC, and were soon aboard the boats for a swashbuckling adventure… this is another Disney classic ride, and I love it!

We exited into the gift shop. I swooned over Captain Jack Sparrow, and continued on our way.

By now, we were all feeling peckish, and we knew we had credits not being used for ADRs, so made use of them by buying lunch at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Café.

Whilst lining up (which always takes forever in counter service places at Walt Disney World) we made our decisions on what to have. I also made the decision to have my drink in a novelty boot cup. I'm a sucker for novelty drinking vessels, and this is added to my collection to go in the bar I plan on constructing in the garden! We paid out of pocket for this ($8.99) as it is not included in the dining plan.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a quick-service restaurant you are entitled to one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage for one credit per person.

Entrées…

Me: Southwest Chicken Salad – chicken breast served over mixed greens with chipotle ranch dressing, Monterey Jack cheese, tomato, roasted corn, and jalapeno ($9.69)

Him: Taco Salad – Fried flour tortilla with seasoned beef ($9.29) + Chili-Cheese Fries ($4.99 –a snack credit)

The Boy: Deluxe 1/3lb Angus Cheeseburger – topped with bacon, onion rings and barbecue sauce, with corn on the cob, apple slices, or French fries ($11.29)

You can add to your meal with toppings like fried onions, salad, pickles, cheese, and sauces at the Toppings Bar.

I really enjoy the salads at the counter service places in WDW, and this was no exception – it was loaded and was very tasty.

I don't seem to have a photograph of Steve's taco salad, but here are his chili-cheese fries, and I think, the taco bowl may be in the shot of Liam's burger. All the food was good. We found a seat eventually, but it was messy from the previous guests, so a little clean up operation from us was in order. By now I the heat had been getting to us, and I remember Steve and I bickering about something or other. Arrrgh, don't you hate it when that happens! It was soon put to rest though, and we enjoyed our lunch without any further incident!

Desserts…

Me: Carrot Cake ($4.19)

Him: Chocolate Cake ($4.19)

The Boy: Chocolate Cake ($4.19)

Nothing special to write home about – cake is cake! I think after a spoonful, these just went into the bin -_-

Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Café

Bill Total: $55.14 (3 Credits) {Tip: $0}

DxDDP Running Totals: Bill: $3145.07 | Credits: 94/126 | Tips: $426.03

**************************************************

Looking through my spreadsheet of snacks, it looks like we bought some drinks through the day, as well as kettlecorn (to take home) and of course those chili-cheese fries up there

**************************************************

2 bottles Coca-Cola, Mickey Kettlecorn + Chili-Cheese Fries

Total: $16.37 (3 Credits)

DxDDP Running Snack Totals: $193.58 | Snack Credits: 44/84

**************************************************

We cleared our table and ventured outside, to find a spot for the Festival of Fantasy Parade which we hoped wouldn't be rained off at the very last minute like it was on our first day at Magic Kingdom!

Prepare yourself for a LOT of photographs and not much else in this section of my trip report! People were already lining the street for the parade, and we found a spot on a wall just outside of Pecos Bill. We got talking to the American family who were also sitting there, and discussing what a shambles Villain's Unleashed had been, the night before! Glad to know we weren't the only ones who were disappointed.

We soon heard the sounds of a marching band – and around the corner, the Main Street Philharmonic came walking out playing their brass and drums, followed by the Grand Marshall – a family picked to ride in the car at the front of the parade.

I was going to miss the Celebrate a Dream Come True which Festival of Fantasy replaced, but when I heard the music of this new parade begin, I was very excited! I do love a Disney parade!

Out first was Beauty and the Beast, followed by Cinderella, Princess Tiana and Prince Nazeem (The Princess & The Frog) and Anna and Esla (Frozen)

The floats I the parade are AMAZING! Full of so much detail, and I can't wait to see this parade again, just to see the new things I can see. I also loved how each float was preceded by a group of dancers. You didn't know where to look there was so much going on!

The Tangled float followed next, with Rapunzel (frying pan in hand) leading, with Flynn Ryder and some goons swinging behind – an impressive float!

The Little Mermaid float with Ariel sitting atop it was next. I loved this one – it blew out bubbles!

Peter Pan was next, with Wendy by his side, Captain Hook balancing on an anchor beneath the ship, and Tinkerbell sitting on the back of the float, being a cheeky fairy! Finally, the croc brought up the rear!

And if the photos weren't enough, here's our videos too:

To Scotland next for Merida and the Brave float in the shape of bagpipes

Up next was the float I'd been waiting for – the Maleficent Dragon from Sleeping Beauty. The 3 fairies led the way, followed by Prince Philip, and finally the huge monster float – amazing to see!

I don't know what I was looking at, at the time, but I completely missed the dragon blowing out FIRE! In fact, I hadn't even realised it did that, until we saw the parade again a few days later! (I'd avoided all video spoilers of the parade so far)

Walking behind were Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Alice, The White Rabbit and The Mad Hatter, and Jiminy Cricket. Who gave way to Pinocchio on a whale shaped float.

Following straight behind (it may have even been the same float) was Donald and Daisy – and more bubbles!

Goofy and Chip 'n' Dale walked behind, leading the way for the final float – a hot air balloon with Mickey and Minnie!

After the excitement of the parade, the crowds dispersed, and we decided to call it a day, wanting to go back to Old Key West, hit the pool for a while and chill out before our dinner reservation later in the evening at California Grill.

As we walked back through Adventureland, we decided to have a Dole Whip from Aloha Isle – we haven't had one before, and wasn't entirely sure if we would be coming back to Magic Kingdom, so bought one each – just to be safe!

Whilst Liam and Steve lined up, I hung out taking some photos, and then sat down to wait for them. I hadn't realised I'd picked a smoking area (not ideal, having that so close to a food counter in my opinion) so let the boys know I'd be moving on to wait for them just outside the entrance of Adventureland, as I couldn't handle the smoke smell which was making me heave.

The line was long at Aloha Isle (which is why I went a wandering!) and they soon rushed towards me with the Dole Whips so I could take photos for this trip report before they melted in the blazing sunshine!

Steve bought 3 Dole Whip Floats – two orange and a pineapple flavour – lushness! They are $4.99 each and can be bought with a snack credit. We sat and ate our treats before moving on.

3 x Dole Whip Floats

On the walk out of Magic Kingdom, which we do by walking through the shops (they're all interlinked, and have lovely cold air-con!) and then heard the Main Street Philharmonic again. We stopped to listen to them, before a quick rest room pit stop and back on the monorail to Contemporary to pick up our car.

After a couple of hours rest, we got ready for our dinner reservation at California Grill at the Contemporary. We'd marked it down as our anniversary dinner – just a few weeks late A heads up if driving to Contempo – stay in the far right lanes when you go through the toll gate, so that you don't miss the exit for it. We've done this in the past and had to drive ALL the way back around, and it's not a short trip!

We were looking forward to our meal here as heard good things about the restaurant. We were also excited to be able to watch Wishes. We got there a bit early so as to request a table by the window – they were happy to meet our request, and we waited in the bar lounge whilst they got a table ready.

Whilst waiting, I had a Pina Colada, and Steve and Liam had a coke – we paid out of pocket for them (around $15 with tip). We were soon called to our table which was covered in Mickey confetti, and given our menus.

And the view from our table was outstanding!

All signature dining seems to start out with a bread basket, with a flavoured butter. I should have written dwon what each one was in each restaurant, but I forgot…

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) Signature restaurants are 2 credits per person.

In all honesty, this was so long ago now, and my notes from our last few days in Orlando were, uhm, zero, so I don't remember too much detail of the food any more. I'm certain it was very good though, our server was very attentive and chatty, and we liked it enough to book to go back on our next trip. Here's what we had…

Appetizers…

Me: Oshizushi – tuna-avocado tempura, salmon-tobiko tartar, chili-soy glaze ($24)

Him: Yuzu-Marinated Sashimi – yellowfin tuna, salmon, izumidai, hamachi, wasabi oil ($24)

The Boy: Dragon Roll – spicy and tataki tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado, dragon sauce, hijiki shirataki salad ($25)

The food presentation was wonderful, and the sushi and sashimi that we had was very good too. Liam attempted sushi, but wasn't a fan – it means hubs and I shared his app.

As we finished our appetizers, we saw the Electric Water Pageant float by on Seven Seas Lagoon – not the best photos I'm afraid!

Entrées…

Me: Lamb Porterhouse – lemon-roasted artichokes, fregola, Marcona almonds, sun-dried tomato vinaigrette ($49)

Him: Bison Tenderloin – Benzinger olive oil potatoes, candied rhubarb, Vidalia onions, Madeira fig demi-glace ($50)

The Boy: Oak-Fired Filet of Beef – heirloom tomato risotto, baby vine tomatoes, tiny basil, tomato butter ($49)

The meats were tender and full of flavour, and some unusual accompaniments too which made for very interesting dishes.

Desserts…

Me: Sundae Sampler – unique and playful sundaes with a nostalgic twist: Frangelico toffee, reverse root beer float, and banana split ($13)

Him: Seasonal "Backyard Barbecue" Tasting – Walrhona chocolate and smoked marshmallow s'mores, strawberry shortcake with sweet cream, and spiked cherry-lime mojito ($13)

The Boy: Chocolate Pudding Cake – luscious chocolate cake with Nutella filling, meringue kisses, and Chantilly cream ($14)

I had already seen desserts going out with mini bottles on the plate, and I said to Steve "I MUST have THAT!" and so, despite the fact that I don't like root beer, I did, cos I like cute little bottles :v

As we were celebrating our anniversary, they also added a congratulations chocolate to both mine and Steve's dessert plates.

As our desserts arrived, Wishes began – the restaurant dimmed down the lights and piped the music in. Rain had started to fall, and I'm glad we were inside watching them from such a fantastic vantage point! Seeing them from up here, we couldn't believe quite how far behind Cinderella Castle the fireworks go off from!

It really was a perfect ending to a perfect day!

Amazing fireworks pictures!

I am tempted to valet park at The Contemporary too, we are hiring a car for the first time this year and I'm undecided whether or not we'll drive to MK or take the bus. Valet parking would be a good alternative, I think it's a bit of a bargain really!

The salad at Pecos Bills is gorgeous, the dressing was a bit spicy for me so I had some ranch from the condiments stand instead. Loved the fresh corn.
