Howdy Texas! Day 20 Houston

We were spending today in Houston, so we had a good breakfast and got a map of downtown to try and orientate ourselves. We also found a car park near the cafe we were meeting Andrew at, and put the address into the Satnav.

Schools were going back in the US today, so we looked out for the school buses as we drove into the city. The car park was pretty easy to find and we walked half a block to Market Square.

Here we saw a 9-11 memorial called Lauren's garden, built in memory of Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, who was a passenger on Flight 93. There is a fountain with 3 towers, representing the 3 crash sights and then pebbles, each representing a life lost - 2628 small pebbles for those at the World Trade Center, 184 larger ones for the Pentagon victims and then 40 larger stones for the passengers on flight 93. It was very thoughtfully and beautifully done and quite moving.

We met up with Andrew at a Greek-American cafe called Niko Niko and sat in the shade drinking iced coffees and catching up. It was so nice to see him and such a complete fluke that we were all in the same city at the same time. He is American and has been moving around the US for work after returning from a round the world trip.

After 2 and a half hours, we said our goodbyes and agreed not to leave it so long next time! We also found a fellow customer to take a picture for us.

Hurrah for social media - we would never have managed to meet up without it.

We weren't far from downtown, so had a walk to explore a little further. Hannah managed to spot a car with Wyoming plates, which was one of the states we hadn't seen so far, so she got extra i-Spy points.

There is a free bus that does a loop around downtown, so we hopped on that to see a bit more. Then we walked back to the car, finding the network of underground tunnels that have shops and restaurants in them. They are all air-conditioned and a good way of getting out of the scorching heat above ground.

We also found the Houston ballet and got the kids to pose in front (although Hannah made more of an effort than her brother).

There are lots of museums in Houston but we didn't really fancy any of them, so just headed back to the hotel for a swim instead. We were the only people in the fairly small pool but had fun messing about in there.

For tea, we picked a barbecue place a short drive away - the Brisket House. It was okay but a little greasy and while we were there, I didn't feel too good. I felt pretty sick on the way back to the hotel and had a very subdued evening - I had felt quite achey when I woke up in the morning, so wonder if I had picked up some kind of virus. Either that or the heat had got to me. Either way, it was a bit rubbish but fortunately didn't last.

The ill feeling didn't last fortunately. So hot and humid - you really needed those tunnels!

Shame you felt yuk at the end of what was a great day - sounds lovely mooching around in the sunshine exporing the city.
That fountain has been so thoughtfully done - very moving.
