A Tale As Old As... January 2016 - Day 4: Disney Springs and Magic Kingdom

The Index

Day 4 - Disney Springs & Magic Kingdom

Sunday 24th January 2016

With the alarm set for 8am, we somewhat predictably woke up at 6.45! It was slowly getting light outside. Todays plan had been Blizzard Beach but given it was 2 degrees when we woke up it was unlikely to be considerably warmer so we quickly cancelled those plans (and in fact the park was closed for a week due to the weather) and decided to have a lazy morning doing the washing we needed to do, then hit Disney Springs.

I washed my hair whilst Rich made the usual breakfast items and got our bag ready for the day. It was 9 by the time we left and we wandered round the resort taking photos, it really is a pretty place. We called in at Artist’s Palette to refill our Disney mugs and I got more of the yummy cocoa.

It really is such a beautiful resort!

The room we were in was 2712 and we headed back there to drop our mugs off and headed to Disney Springs just before its 10am opening. It was a gorgeous walk in the sun and as long as he kept to the sun, Rich was making the most of wearing shorts.

We went straight into one of our favourite stores – the Christmas shop! We had a good look round with the pleasure of no one being in there but nothing caught my eye. I had wanted a stocking for our new house but they weren’t as nice as on our last visit so I left it for this trip.

Although Rich did like this it was a little small for him

From there we went to Mickey’s Pantry and spotted a few things to add to our collection but would wait for the World of Disney.

This hat was sadly not one of those things...

We then had a nosy in the rainforest café, t-rex shops and boathouse shops. As well as the little shops nearby such as Havianna where you could create your own style flip flops

Those paddles in the latter really are nice for a nautical room!

Next up was the art of shaving to see if they could fit Rich in for a traditional shave whilst we were there. It was $35 and despite there being plenty of staff and no one around they said they couldn’t fit us in till 6pm but that didn’t work for our plans so we just left it. My dad really likes having this done so I think I’ll book the boys in on our next family trip together.

It was getting steadily busier now and we headed into the amazing World of Disney. We were in here for about an hour and got an assortment of things! I'll do a shopping summary at the end or it would take foreverrrrrr.

I wanted to buy this for my dad

We found it useful that you could take items to Guest relations and they’ll check where else has it in stock. I had decided to buy the leopard print ears from AK yesterday and they had them in sale in Magic Kingdom, as they did a t-shirt I wanted for my auntie but wasn’t in her size. I had a good look at all the Pandora charms on offer. They’ll show you which ones are Disney/park exclusives in a booklet which is useful but I decided to hold off to see if there was anything different at MK. We ended up using our Disney $200 gift card in full plus a little more in dollars. This was the majority of our Disney shopping done though.

It was midday and we were starving so there was only one place for it – Earl of Sandwich! The queue was its usual craziness but went quickly. We had signed up to the EOS website before travelling and were sent vouchers for free crisps and soft drink with each sandwich, so we used one of these and just bought the other sandwich and crisps rather than use counter service credits. This was the one voucher that said it had to be printed but I hadn’t received mine to the day before (it took 2-3 days to come through) but they were happy to take the code of my email.

Both: Holiday Turkey Sandwich (mine without mayo) $6.99 x 2, Original chips $2.58 x 2 (1 was free) and soda $2.99 (free). The total was $16.27 including tax.

Worth every cent! Yum!

We decided to get a dessert to share from Goofy’s Candy Co and I knew I wanted to make my own treat! Rich was happy to have whatever I had so I went ahead and filled out the little order form for my treat. Very exciting haha.

How cute are these!

you fill out the form and hand it in and they make it then and there

I went for the Rice Treat with Dark Chocolate, chocolate chips and chocolate drizzle. The toppings selection was a bit sparse as I didn’t like most of the the things on it. It was fun to watch them to it and even more exciting when it was done, but we just put it in its bag for now and took it with us for later! It was gurrrrd when we did eat it between us and it took a few goes it was so yummy.

Walking back to the hotel it was about 1pm and the sky was a gorgeous blue. We quickly got changed into warmer clothes as we knew it would be a late one and after a bit of faffing left at 1.30 for the bus. As usual a bus was there so we had to let it! Unfortunately, it was only when we set off did Rich remember the Go-Pro so we hopped off at the Springs and Rich walked back for it whilst I waited at the bus stop in the sunshine. He wasn’t long and when we showed up a bus wasn’t far behind. Whilst I’d been waiting a bus for every park had been past so they must be pretty regular.

It was quite pleasant about 10 degrees when you weren’t in the shade. Rich was rocking the new jumper he’d just bought this morning too.

On board and on our way at 2pm it took 20 minutes till we were jumping off at MK. Rich got picked for the additional metal detector screening again – must be something about him as he was picked all the time on this trip! There was a photopass photographer out front so we went and queued for a few minutes to have some photos done.

We then went straight through and onto the railway to take us to frontier land. We hadn’t been on this before and it’s a lovely way to get round the park without walking! We were hoping to do Thunder Mountain but the queue was 45 minutes and we would have missed the parade so we stalked out a place for that instead. We were late arrivals but managed to find somewhere that wasn’t very busy and stood behind a young family. It was very hot in the sunshine stood there, which was rather difficult for taking photos when the parade did start. We enjoyed the parade again especially the dragon breathing fire, it’s a great touch!

Then back to Thunder but was now 70 minutes so we gave up on that idea. Hall of Presidents it was instead, following the slow slow walk of post parade followers who can’t decide where they are going. I’m a bit of an American history geek so I like this sort of thing. Its always a bit bizarre when they starting whopping for George W Bush though. Just on that topic the Iowa caucus had been on TV all week too (calling all West Wing watchers here!) which was interesting to see.

Richards vans backpack and walmart matching water cooler

It was 4pm by this point and we headed for Adventureland as it was nearby and I wanted the infamous leopard print ears! Found them in a bazaar I’d never really noticed before (near the toilets) and for $20 I was happy! It was super busy round here they was some kind of filming going on and Jungle cruise was a 45 minute wait! So we headed back to Main Street and had some photopass done – what else?! Haha. We enjoyed watching one girl trying to do a jump shot for the photographer but her scarf kept on covering her face when she jumped. Each and every time. Jump, scarf covered face. Jump, scarf covered face. No matter what the photographer said to her the same thing happened! After half a dozen shots he sent her on her way and raised his eyebrows at us jokingly when we suggested she could have took the scarf off. Lol.

Into the shops next and unfortunately they didn’t have the t-shirt in the size we needed again. Instead I bought a brolly and decided to get my auntie one too for her birthday as they were so cute and she’d love them- $20 each.

We also saw the cushions we’d bought from Disney Springs this morning but they had a nice green one that was prettier than the black we’d bought. So we made a mental note to take them back to Disney Springs and swap them if we could.

It was close to 5pm now which was the flag retreat I was wanting to watch. We headed up to the railway station to watch from there and watched the short ceremony. It starts with a brass band and then the flag comes down to the national anthem and they announce a veteran of the day I think. Today it was a gentleman from the Second World War and it was lovely to see everyone clapping. I’m glad we’ve seen it but I don’t think I’d rush back to see it again specifically.

It was time for the castle in front of the show next so we wandered there and got a good place. I have watched this so many times on You tube I almost know all the words. Its such a good-feeling show it makes me feel happy. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!

I love how Mickeys eyes are half closed on this

We also took the chance to take a quick selfie to take a photo where Rich has proposed after Wishes in 2012 – ahhhhh.

Our first fastpass for space mountain was calling so we headed across the bridge to Tomorrowland. Not before a photopass of course!

There was such a strong smell of weed by this ride! There was a small wait and annoyingly a third person was put in our car but wasn’t put in with anyone else – weird. As always it was pretty bumpy but a good ride.

We had 45 minutes to kill before our next fastpass and the sun was just going down so we (mostly read ‘I’ in exchange for ‘we’ there) decided to wait for the carousel. It took about ten minutes as the queue was pretty big. Rich wasn’t thrilled but I enjoyed it, particularly the two kids in front getting off, the girl was kissing her horse repeatedly and the boy was just refusing to get off. Haha. Good luck with that parents.

Deciding to chance our fastpass for Seven Dwarves five minutes early we got on no problem and was walking off at our actual fast pass time. We enjoyed the second time too particularly being in the dark with the ride lit up, we were in the forth row and is probably better at the back.

Stopping off at the lovely lit tangled toilets to take some photos we then headed to Caseys for our hotdog fix.

We really do like it here but like our last visit it was too cold to sit outside so it was rammed inside! I went to order and sent Rich to try and find somewhere to sit/lean/stand with a tray.

We had:

M: Barbecue slaw dog – topped with pulled pork, coleslaw and bbq sauce, served with fries $10.29 (mine was sans coleslaw)
R: Chilli-cheese dog – topped with chili and melted cheddar, served with fries $10.29

And used 1 counter service credit for mine with a drink and swapped the dessert for a portion of fries and just paid for Richards. Rich had found a counter to lean against, so we made do there. Just a bit of a rant here but there was people sat down with laptops out and a portion of fries that had clearly been here a while taking up several tables, and in fact they were there in the same spot with the same fries when we were leaving a few hours later! When there isn’t heaps of seating Disney should really make an effort to move people like this so people can eat the food they are selling!

On a positive note, the food was as good as we remembered. I decided then and there that I was too full for the dessert cup I had been planning for from near Fantasyland

We went back into the shops to keep in the warm and went to the Pandora desk where I bought two charms – 1 of them was a park exclusive and they came to $133 including tax. There was so many I wanted!

Rich had been eyeing up a Donald watch all week so he finally tried it on. Then decided to wait some more and think about it so put it back. Back out now our next stop was Starbucks for a hot drink. We picked up the MK mug I wanted and I got a venti caramel macchiato for a snack credit and Rich got a tea and a walnut brownie which was $3.50, paid for OOP. It unfortunately then took 15 minutes for them to make my drink during which we watched the electrical parade go past the window.

We walked up towards the square to cut behind the parade as it went up Main Street to get to the fastpass viewing area as soon as we could, as Rich wanted a railing at the front to set his tripod up on. We got there about 8.25 and bagged a space at the front. There is a walkway right in front that people try to stop on but the cast members do move people off it regularly. The only downside to being at the front was that when kids were lifted onto shoulders in front it makes it really hard to see the bottom and middle of the castle from here, which we were disappointed about. I know they needed to see but they really did ruin our view and that of most people in our area.

Celebrate the Magic came on at 8.45 and it was brilliant, one of our favourites things to see when we go to Disney for sure. Wishes followed at 9 and it was fantastic as usual. We just find that these fireworks move us more than any of the others.

We agreed to hang back and let the crowds disperse as MK was open till 11pm tonight. We decided then to pop into the shops as I wanted a cd to cover the parks music. We could only find a wishes one, but I wanted one to include Celebrate the Magic really.

Calling it a night we were walking towards the exit when they announced they were showing Celebrate the Magic again so we headed up to the railway station to get an elevated view. It was even better second time round with an unobstructed view (flag pole aside) and I’d watch it from here again. They don’t turn the lights off on Main Street though so you lose a bit of ambience. Rich then realised the Electrical parade would be on shortly at 10pm and as it started near us we decided to wait it out. I tried to facetime my sister who lives in Australia as I knew she’d be up and she answered on the beach with my cousin Nathan who is travelling there too at the moment – it was a lovely surprise but unfortunately the signal cut out again and I barely got 20 seconds. Talk about a different world away and we were freezing our bums off in Florida! They love it there too so I had just thought I’d catch them up on what we’d been doing.

As it headed up Main St

We watched and enjoyed the parade and left straight after it passed us to get onto a bus back to SSR about 11pm. Exhausted but happy at what we’d got done that day.

What a great day, I love those animal print Mickey ears! Those Grumpy T-shirt photos made me laugh, I bought the one on the left for my dad and my OH bought the middle one as he said it was very appropriate when dating me 😂
Looking forward to reading more

It's so cold it looks like you're in Paris rather than Florida!

I love those throw cushions, I'm going to buy one every visit to try and gather them all together.

Just caught up on your report. What do you mean 2 degrees is too cold for Blizzard Beach? I thought you were from the north - lol!
Looking forward to reading more.
