Grand Train Journey - USA
Prompted by the new TV series - Billy Connolly's Tracks Across America and the subsequent thread that appeared here on the DIBB - http://DIBB.in/11460544
I have decided to do a trip report on a train journey we took across the States back in 2006. Back then, I had never heard of the DIBB and consequently we composed a blog which was published on Typepad at the time. I've gone back to those writings and will "revive" and update them with relevant photos. Billy said: ""You have to see these places. You can't always just go to Disney." Many of us agreed on that remark and I'd like to try and illustrate some of the vastness of USA and the amazing things you can see along the way. As usual, there will be a bit of history in there which I hope will enhance the adventure. So, what made us take the decision to set off coast to coast by train? Our original plan was to start in San Francisco. It doesn't have a railroad station by the way! The nearest is across the bay at Emeryville - home of Pixar Animation or at Oakland. The reason for this is "water barriers". It wasn't seen as economical to take train lines across the bay, bridge-wise, a la Golden Gate and was much easier to curve it around the inner bay. Then a friend mentioned the "Coast Starlight" - a service that runs from Seattle in the far North West to Los Angeles in sunny California. That's when research really began. We discovered that Amtrak offered a monthly pass for all their services. You could "bolt" sleepers and meals onto this making travel quite affordable... Edited at 03:35 PM. |

I hope I don't disappoint. I've dug out all the notes and maps and have started to sort through them. It's amazing what you forget.
