Howling @ the Horror October 2015 - Day 10 - Behind the Screams

Back to Day 9

We woke up in RPR slightly later than we planned this morning (think thats was the late nights catching up with us!) and had a bit of a rush to get to Universal in time for our Behind The Screams Tour.

We had breakfast at Beverly Hills Boulangerie, which made me smile as they have even imported the, err, european style of service, which is not great when you are in a rush. But the Pastries here are very nice and very filling.

We have done the Behind the Screams tours for the last couple of visits and think they are a must for any HHN fans. You get to learn so much about how the houses work as well as seeing details you would otherwise miss.

This is me kissing an American Werewolf (much to the delight on one of the " Wolf Handlers" who was on set at the same time we were!)

And this is an example of the sort of Easter Egg that is pointed out on the tour, its a picture of the Munsters hidden about 7ft in the air!

This is SIF (Stuff in Face) which is a favourite of the designers and can be anything from clothes to fishing line and all meant to disorientate you.

I model with a fabric hardner called powertex as a hobby and these Weeping Angels are were made with the same material, I spent a lot of time inspecting these.

And one of the first things they tell you on the tour is that everything, and I mean everything is nailed or glued down because otherwise it would be pinched in the first week!

HHN Tip No 4 - You must do the tour! We did the full day, so you see 6 houses. 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon with a lunch break. Take plenty of water, be prepared to walk a lot and remember your camera and ask lots of questions!

At lunch time we snuck in a quick Minion Mayhem (as we still have FOLP) and a quick bite to eat.

We finished about 4pm, got changed into our HHN T-shirts and headed to the Simpsons for something to eat before taking it around to the bar holding pen for our next HHN evening.

So I want to talk about some of the Legends that HHN have developed over the years. These are on-going themes which keep cropping up and you get a whole story around them. As this was the 25th Anniversary they bought back a range of the fan's favourites.

The first one formed the basis of both my person favourite scare zone and one of my favourite houses and that is PsychoScareapy and the Shadybrook Asylum. Over the years we have seen the asylum descend into chaos more than once and a certain clown is also an ex-resident of the house...

This year we were in a very early incarnation of the house where they house has been run over by another of the HHN Legends - The Body Collectors...

The Body Collectors are a mysterious group of Victorian Gentlemen who may (or may not) be responsible for certain unsolved crimes of that age... and this year we find out what they want the bodies for!

This was a brilliant mash up of two well-loved themes of HHN which you would enjoy the house even if you don't understand the background... A definite 5/5

We then moved to the modern day Shadybrook Asylum where the inmates were on the loose and having a Block Party - Halloween Style. This zone was a mixture of brilliant set peices and roaming scareactors

We had seen this set peices so many times - so why am I shocked that he caught me?

The actors in this zone was brilliant - this guy kept offering to kill Mr W for me...

And this actor was just so scary she looked so young and innocent! This was one of those zones which just got better was it got darker - was most definitely 5/5

The other Legend I wanted to touch on was this year's 3D house, Scary Tales - their take on the darker side of Fairy Tales, this year - how much of Wonderland was made up in Asylum in Wonderland.

Now I am a huge fan of 3D houses and this had everything, mirrors, moving bits, roller skates and trampolines. It was very very well done and another 5/5 from us.

We didn't head back to the carpark at RPR until about 12am and made our way back to the villa having had a brilliant day.

HHNs aren't for me but I do think I'd enjoy the Behind the Scenes tour. I had no idea they had so many special events.

We love the tour - there is so much effort put into the houses, down to the music and sounds. When ever they are in Shadybrook, you will hear "Theme from a Summers Day" playing somewhere.
