It's all set in (Yellow) stone - Day 3
Day 3 – 3/7/16
You don’t need a viewing area to see mosquitoes! Silly o’clock hits in once again. 3:45 a.m. and I’m wide awake. My mozzie bites are itching so I use the zap stick and take some anti-histamines. Darrin snores gloriously on. I make a cup of tea and tidy up my writings for this report. My hubby eventually awakens at 7a.m. How I envy how he can sleep. I swear he has a rocker switch that clicks over to “off “ when he lies down. Me – half an hour or more before I drift off. Breakfast is at Wingers where we had the meal the night before. The servers are really pleasant and once again we get told that they love our accents. I have a bacon scramble – think rough omelette with bacon bits in it whilst Sleepy goes with a 3 egg scramble. The orange juice we ordered must have been a pint each! They have a map of the USA on the wall and ask people to place a pin in it for the town or city they come from. I’m not happy about this insularity and thus make a small paper sign pointing across the Atlantic bearing the words “London. U.K. That should get ‘em thinking. We now leave the I – 80 and start to head north on the 191. Before we truly leave Rock Springs we need to fill up the car. The “Gas” here is $2:25 a (US) gallon. Not bad, considering we have seen up to $2:45 in some places. I can only describe the landscape as looking like the moors of Britain. The biggest difference is that they stretch to a wide horizon. We pass many ranches along the route – The Lazy Q, Sagebrush Creek and even a Home on the Range! There are either cattle or horses grazing and at one point we see four camels! Llamas and alpacas are popular too. The day is glorious. It’s 78 up here. We pass through Eden – population 261. It has two “cuter” churches and a Centennial park. There are turn outs where you can pull over and admire the views. The signs say: Viewing point for wildlife. The wildlife here seems to consist solely of mosquitoes that are intent on getting into our car. The view however is stunning. In the distance are the White River Mountains still snow - capped in places. Another sign proclaims that a litter offence will cost you $7,000. Yes, that is correct. $7,000. We need to introduce that in the U.K. As we pull into Pinedale we spot Ridley’s store. For some reason we keep referring to it as Ripley’s. It has a coffee shop so we take ten minutes to sit and enjoy the brew. A quick look around the store yields Milky Way bars – our lunch! I’ve written one or two postcards and on the main road we find the Post Office where I drop them into one of those blue mail boxes. Heaven knows when they will appear back home. Next up is Bodurant – population 93. That’s a density 0f 2.0 people per square mile. The land changes and we could be in Austria. Pine trees cover the hill sides and the Hoback river twists and turns under the road at several points. People are canoeing or fishing on this pleasant afternoon. Apparently the trout are good. The next body of water is the Snake River. Again, folk are rafting and canoeing and some brave souls are even swimming. 604 miles and 3 days since leaving Denver, we turn into Jackson Hole – gateway for the Grand Tetons (pronounced TEEtons) and Yellowstone National Park. We are at the Wyoming Inn on Broadway and it’s yet another successful choice. Beautiful décor – and around here they “use antlers in all of their decorating”. We are in Room 321 overlooking the Port Cochere of the hotel. It is really neat with one of those screened gas fires for chilly evenings and a wonderful window seat where you can just watch the world go by. My only complaint – there is no bath tub. Shower only. Apart from that it really is a lovely room and even has a “wet bar”. Once settled in we head for the Town Centre. I know what to expect because when researching our trip I had seen photos on the internet. You could have walked onto a cowboy film set. Wonderful buildings with boardwalks and quaint, very expensive shops. There are one or two tacky ones too. At one such art shop there are sculptures outside of a bear, elk and moose. They also have benches on which are sat famous personalities like Einstein. I choose to sit with George Washington and we discuss the action of dismissing another country’s rule in favour of our own. How topical! The Town Square has four arches of elk antlers. The saying goes that if you steal one you’ll have 20 years back luck. There is a stagecoach runs around town for the tourists and the Moo ice cream parlour has a line that would any Disney ride justice! We pop in various shops and I pick up a pair of jeans for $39 reduced from $80 – a bargain! We get odds and ends for gifts for people back home. We pop into Starbucks for Mocha Frappuccinos and Darrin spots one guy wearing a Walt Disney World Magic Band – seriously I double checked. What use he thought it would be out here, I know not. We stick our heads in at the Millionaire Cowboy bar and decide maybe it isn’t our kind of place. It’s like something out of Thelma and Louise. We also check out the site at the base of Snow King Mountain for the 4th July fireworks which will take place at 10p.m. tomorrow. Up at Teton Village they do them both on the 3rd and the 4th. We are back at the hotel by 6:30p.m. Time for drinkies. I have a Roasted Pecan whisky on the rocks – I got it at that liquor store we called at on route. Darrin is on bottled margaritas. We also have tubs of Blue Diamond almonds and Planters peanuts. I write some more postcards in preparation of 4th July. We have decided to try the Gun Barrel steakhouse which is 3 blocks down from the hotel. Ok maybe the name may not appeal to some folk but we liked what was on the menu. There is a 45 minute wait for a table (we have cleverly pre booked a place for 4th July – we are not stupid), so we head to the bar. Now then, Jackson Hole seems to have a penchant for shooting things and then hanging their heads on the walls. The back of the bar looks like part of that Grand Canyon diorama that they have when you travel on the park railroad at Disneyland, California. I happen to look up and discover that Darrin has seated himself in a very appropriate place – look at the top of the picture. “We’re gonna be having a lynching in here tonight, folks!” Two Wyoming Whiskies and two Bombay gin and tonics later our table is ready. I have the buffalo wings with a baked potato. What dinosaur did these things come off? They are delicious with that BBQ/mesquite sauce over them with onion straw fries on the side. Darrin chooses bison and they are accompanied with green beans and onion straw fries too. The wine was a Stag’s Leap Merlot. We are full so no desserts. This meat is real good but I don’t think the boar above our table agrees! It’s lovely evening as we walk back to the hotel. It’s only just before 10p.m. when we get back so I carry on with this trip report and Darrin checks emails. A mug of tea each and then bed on a gloriously comfortable bed. Great journey. We found loads of taxidermy too on our trip - including 3 huge polar bears in one place! - not something I'm personally comfortable with but the diners were certainly good

Geoffa I do like your writing style. I find myself chuckling away to myself whilst reading it. I've been referring to this area Grand TENtons, why I hadn't noticed there is no 'n' until now i will never know. Looking forward to the Yellowstone part.

Looks amazing, there does seem to be a reasonable amount of taxidermy, though you've not experienced anything unless you've visited Caulke Abbey, a National Trust place near where we live.
Yellowstone is definitely on Pete's want to visit list, so I am loving reading your report
