Roaring Fork

Roaring Fork

Today was a very slow day – we had a long lay in, before getting ourselves ready to go down to the Hidden Springs Pool to hang out for pretty much the rest of the day. We had lunch from the Roaring Fork, which is the counter service place at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. We were able to bring the food out on trays, and had our lunch pool side.

It looks to me, that since we hadn’t had breakfast that we must have been hungry, as we bought an extra meal – a salad, cupcake and drink. I imagine I would have wanted some veggies, but also fancied a sandwich too. I’m pretty sure that the desserts ended up going back up to our room to snack on later.

Entrées…

Me: Grilled Northwest Chicken Sandwich – with Canadian Bacon, Wilderness Sauce, and Cheddar ($10.79)

Him: Barbecued Pork & Slaw Sandwich – served with French Fries ($10.19)

The Boy: 1/3LB Angus Bacon Cheeseburger – served with French Fries ($10.79)

Extra!: Wilderness Salad – with Chicken, Walnuts, Apples, Cheddar, Croutons, and Apple Vinaigrette ($10.79)

Desserts…

I don’t have it written down who had what when it came to desserts – it’s quite likely we shared them, or, as I said before, took them back up to our room. Looks like it was a chocolate brownie, a cookie, a cupcake, and some sort of pastry. We also had bottles of juice, as well as topping up our resort mugs with sodas.

Artist Point

Artist Point

As I said, it was a slow day today, just chilling out, and not doing much. I do like that now that we have been to Walt Disney World several times, that we can afford to take down days, and not feel like we are missing out.

We had a late dinner reservation at Artist Point, which is a Signature Restaurant at Wilderness Lodge. We have not dined here before, so this was a completely new place for us.

We checked in for our reservation, and were shown to a table immediately. Our server introduced himself, and was quite thorough in going through the menu. This seems to be standard when it comes to Signature Restaurants at Walt Disney World; as is a basket of bread and butter which is brought to the table.

The restaurant was dimly lit, and instead of the darker wood that is found around the rest of Wilderness Lodge, the wood in here was a paler colour. I’m sure there was something about that in the menu, or maybe it didn’t… I can’t remember now!

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a signature restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for two credits per person.

The food here was very nice, but the service was a bit slapdash. At some point it got a bit busy, and despite asking for refills for drinks, and wanting to get the server’s attention for a few other things, we found it to be quite difficult. I remember our server being quite forgetful too!

Appetizers…

Me: Artisanal Cheeses – Handcrafted Breads, Seasonal Accoutrements ($16)

Him: Smoked Portobello Bisque – Crispy Foraged Oyster Mushrooms, Nasturtium Oil, Fines Herbs ($10)

The Boy: Land Greens Salad – Heirloom Apples, Sunflower Seed Granola, Sheep’s Milk cheese, Banyuls Vinaigrette ($11)

When we get a cheese or charcuterie plate at a Signature Restaurant, quite often there is a card accompanying the dish telling you what is what. Sometimes, the server just tells you. Or sometimes, both. In this case, we were just left with the card, and no introduction what the accoutrements were, which was a shame. But here are the cheeses on the plate we had:

Lamb Chopper – This Pacific Coast sheep’s milk cheese is a smooth, almost buttery, organic cheese, with a light fruity aroma. The surprising sweetness of this cheese lingers on your palate. Though it might be mild in intensity, this cheese has a great depth of flavor.

MT TAM – Cowgirl Creamery captures the essence of the Northwest Coast with its MT TAM, Cowgirl Creamery’s signature cheese, is a smooth, creamy, elegant tripe-cream. It is made with organic milk from the Straus Family Dairy. MT TAM is firm, yet buttery with a mellow, earth flavor reminiscent of white mushrooms.

Purple Haze – This fresh goat’s milk cheese from Cypress Grove Creamery in Northern California is flavored with lavender buds and wild harvested fennel pollen. The combination of the herbs with the smooth and creamy Chèvre taste is unique.

Flagship Reserve Truckle – Flagship Reserve from Seattle, WA is made when the pasteurized cow’s milk composition is just right. This cheese sings with a rich taste and texture, while maintaining a clean, creamy finish. Flagship Reserve is aged for two full years, giving it a rich, nutty flavor and creamy mouthfeel.

Point Reyes Blue – This Pacific Coast Cheese has a montage of rich flavors made from a blend of pasteurized sustainable raw cow’s milk. The flavor is complex with sweet fresh milk with a medium-to-strong punch of blue flavor. This unique cheese has a semi-soft texture with a silky smooth mouthfeel and a tangy finish.

Served with House Seed Lavash, Crostini, and Accoutrements.

Entrées…

Me: Aged Buffalo Strip Loin – Buffalo Sausage, Mac & Cheese, Romanesca, Crispy Shallots, Blackcurrant Demi ($49)

Him: Chinook Cedar Plank Salmon – Local Potatoes, Frisée, Baby Fennel, Florida Citrus, Olive Tapenade, Verjus ($41)

The Boy: Aged Buffalo Strip Loin – Buffalo Sausage, Mac & Cheese, Romanesca, Crispy Shallots, Blackcurrant Demi ($49)

Liam and I had the same main meal. He’s not he most adventurous of eaters, so sometimes, with Signatures we do struggle with finding him something on the menu! But he ate this up!

I do believe that the Cedar Plank Salmon is a signature dish at Artist Point, and Steve knew he wanted to order this before we even stepped foot in the restaurant! It is brought out on the plank of wood, and then served up onto your plate in front of you. They were so quick to do this, I didn’t get a photo of that I’m afraid.

Desserts…

Me: Old Fashioned Butter Cookies | Cereal Milkshake ($10)

Him: Cobbler | Seasonal Berries | Black Raspberry Ice Cream ($12)

The Boy: Warm House-Made Donuts | Nutella Ganache | Marionberry Jam ($12)

These desserts were fantastic! I was rather full by now, so I drunk up my cereal milkshake (think the flavour of milk that you drink from the bowl after you’ve finished the cereal!) and had a cookie, but wrapped them up to take up to the room for later. The milkshake came in a little glass bottle with a straw, and the cookies in a little paper bag – all presented in a wire basket – very cute!

Liam’s donuts were so good, and looked gorgeous on the plate with the petals sprinkled on the top.

Steve’s cobbler was also very pretty, with floral decorations, and some of the biggest berries we’ve ever seen! (One in my hand for scale! )

Overall, despite the service, which wasn’t bad, just a bit slapdash, we had a lovely meal here. Steve and I do love the signature dining at Walt Disney World – we see them as a real treat inside the Magic! Liam I think, can take it or leave it, due to him being a bit of a fusspot!

Boma: Flavors of Africa

Boma: Flavors of Africa

We drove over to Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House for breakfast at one of our favourite restaurants on Walt Disney World property – Boma: Flavors of Africa.

Boma is a buffet restaurant for breakfast, and dinner. We have eaten here for both meal times. The food has an African, and multi cultural influence, and is set out in sections, so you can go up to the buffet haphazardly, rather than having to line up.

The breakfast menu changes, but you can expect to see the carvery section with ham, turkey, or corned beef; omelettes made to order; African specialities like bobotie (my fave!), chakalaka, and pap; and there is a selection of African pastries too.

If you’re taste buds are not up to the African fayre, there is also “regular” breakfast foods – eggs, bacon, sausage, Mickey waffles, and Simba waffles, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, and breads.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a buffet restaurant, you are entitled to one full buffet and one non-alcoholic beverage (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

The restaurant had some autumn themed decorations at the entrance – lots of pumpkins, and different coloured corn cobs which I thought was very cool. Boma was really busy, and we did have to wait a while for our table.

Casey's Corner

Casey's Corner

Liam was feeling hungry, so we stopped at Casey’s Corner to get him a hot dog and fries. I’ve haven’t got any photographs of that – quite likely because it was exactly what he has had before – so I’ll use that exact same photo!

Casey’s Corner is a quick-service/counter-service restaurant. The rules for the Disney Dining Plan are now a little different, but at the time…

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a quick-service restaurant you are entitled to one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage for one credit per person.

As for Steve and I, our lunch consisted of a Mickey’s Kitchen Sink Sundae from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on Main Street USA, directly opposite Casey’s Corner. This sundae is big enough for 2 or 3 to share, and no where near as big as the Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream at Disney’s Beach Club, where it took 7 of us (4 adults, 1 teen, 2 tweens) to finish it off!

The sundae comes in a cute plastic sink, that looks like Mickey’s shorts! It makes a great take-home souvenir! We had three scoops of ice cream: Mint Choc Chip, Cookies & Cream, and Caramel, and it was topped with hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, and cherries. We paid out of pocket for this, and with tax it was £15.97. You can add additional toppings for an extra cost if you like. After we finished it, we washed it out and popped it in our bag.

Halloween 2015 Cupcakes

Halloween 2015 Cupcakes

We bought a couple of Halloween Cupcakes at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and sat on the kerb eating them whilst waiting for the second rolling of Mickey's Boo To You Parade.

I can't tell you how much they cost, or if we were able to use a snack credit for them, because I don't remember, and don't seem to have a note down on my spreadsheet for them.

I do remember Steve managed to drop one (it was in a box) and the Cast Member gave him another cupcake for free to replace the mushed up one!

Trail's End

Trail's End

Today was a non-park day, with lunch at Trail’s End at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, followed by miniature golf at Winter Summerland, and wrapping up the day with an evening at Downtown Disney and dinner at the new BOATHOUSE.

Instead of driving to Fort Wilderness, we took the inter-resort bus from Wilderness Lodge. This goes “round the back” as it were, and not on the public roads. We only realised this bus service when we went to watch Hoop-Dee-Doo a few days before. It’s very handy, because when you drive to Fort Wilderness you have to park your car, and then catch a bus to the Settlement where the restaurants are.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

We had an early lunch booked, one of the first to be seated for this meal time, as there were still people inside having breakfast. Our server was a bit on the weird side I have to say, she kept getting our order wrong when repeating it back to us, and on the whole the service wasn’t much to live up to.

We were able to tick a few things of our “must eat foods in America list” in the form of fried green tomatoes, a po’ boy, and catfish. Steve has been wanting to try catfish since our first trip in 2011!

The food was good, but I am not sure if we would bother to go here again.

Appetizers…

Me: Smoked Cheese-Stuffed Jalapeño – wrapped in Country Bacon with Peach-Pepper Jelly ($8.49)

Him: Southern Fried Green Tomatoes – with Crawfish Rémoulade ($8.49)

The Boy: Fried chicken Lollipops – with Apple-Chipotle Barbecue and Apple Fennel Slaw ($9.99)

Entrées…

Me: Shrimp Po’ Boy– with Lettuce, Tomato, Spicy Rémoulade, and Bread & Butter Zucchini. Served with French Fries ($13.99)

Him: Pan-Fried Catfish – with Southern Collard Greens, House Fries, and Rémoulade ($16.99)

The Boy: House-Smoked Beef Brisket Sandwich – Shaved Beef Brisket with Country Slaw and French Fries ($15.99)

Desserts…

Me: Trail’s S’mores Tart – Layers of Chocolate and Marshmallow Custard and topped with a Toasted S’more ($5.99)

Him: Warm Sticky Bun Sundae – A Warm Pecan Sticky Bun layered with Butter Pecan Ice Cream, Caramel Sauce, and Whipped Cream ($4.99)

The Boy: Pecan Pie – with a Jack Daniel’s Ganache and Whipped Cream ($5.99)

Ha! It's really bothering me that this is unfinished - it will remain unfinished though, as there is no way I'm going to get it all done before we go - but it's filling up my time as I wait for us to fly!

It was HUGE wasn't it? I honestly couldn't believe it - I think I even Instagrammed it!

Thank you - we do feel lucky this year for this holiday, and really can't wait. After a rather rubbish year, it can't come soon enough x
