Day 1 - AK and DS

I feel I should point out before I start the birthday confusion that will arise during this trip! The trip was in honour of Marie’s 40th which was earlier this year in May. I had informed a CM while on the phone to Disney one day so she added it to all our ADRs. To confuse matters though the rest of us all have birthdays in September. Mums the day before we flew out, Dads Day 1 (so today) and mine later in the holiday. So different days we seemed to be celebrating a different birthday!

So first morning you know you’ll be up early and bearing that in mind I booked us our one and only character breakfast at Tusker House in AK. This was also our only ADR that day. We had an 8.05am ADR and were all up early so had some toast and coffee to keep us going. We left at 7.25am and arrived at AK around 7.50am but didn’t get allowed in the park until 8am. We checked in and were directed round to the restaurant where we were seated straight away. Our server was good despite the area we were in being busy. He was attentive without being annoying although for some weird reason my Mum didn’t like it that he’d filled her Jungle Juice while she was at the buffet!
Here are some photos of mine and Marie's as the ones I took of Mum & Dads came out blurry. I had some beef bobitie, ham and cheese frittata, potato and leek frittata and tater tots. You also need to have a Mickey waffle and I had some donut holes. Feeling like I should make the effort I also got a fruit plate!

I think we all enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure how Mum & Dad would be but they enjoyed the food and made the effort to at least get a picture taken with Goofy. If I post it I’ll get disowned though! Both Mum & Dad had been forced (by me & Marie) to wear birthday badges today so the server spotted them. He asked me while everyone else was at the buffet about it and I explained the complicated birthday situation. He then came back later with signed cards from the characters for Mum & Dad and a birthday cupcake each. Of course me and Marie had experienced this before so thought it was hilarious. They took it in good spirit and we took some photos to send to my brothers girls (he has 3 aged 5, 8 and 11 and we spoil them!).

This would have cost $127.80 ($7.80 was the tax so $30 each). It cost us 4 TS credits and we left a tip of $24 which was 20%. We charged this to the room.

Mid-morning we fancied a drink but I wanted something “nice”, rather than just water or soda. We were close by the Royal Anandapur Tea Company so headed there. Dad didn’t want anything but Mum got an Iced Caramel Latte. She found she had to put quite a bit of sugar in it!

Marie and I got a Passion Fruit Frozen Drink. These were nice and refreshing.

This cost us 3 snack credits. Unfortunately the final dining plan receipts don’t give you costs for the items and I didn’t make a note of how much they cost. The dining app I have says $5.39 each.

It wasn’t long before we were done at AK and decided to head back to OKW for lunch and some pool time. Unfortunately I missed the turning for OKW with all the roadworks so we kept going to Disney Springs. I suggested Wolfgang Pucks Express as a good option for lunch so we headed there. It wasn’t too busy and there were only a couple of people in the queue.

I had the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf. This comes as an entrée and a sandwich but I wanted the entrée. I had this last trip and it’s really tasty although the sauce is quite rich. Despite it being lunchtime I had an appetite for this and really enjoyed it.

Marie had Macaroni and Cheese which looked different to our last trip. Marie enjoyed it more this time I think.

Mum & Dad both had the chicken salad sandwich and a cup of tea. They both said it was really tasty but a bit much at lunch. It came with crisps which Dad wasn’t a fan of – a bit like Kettle chips. I thought they were nice.

(In case you're unsure what a cup of tea looks like!)

This is where the thread title comes in. The portions for the sandwiches were huge and Mum & Dad both agreed they should have shared one. We seemed to say that a lot during this trip so hence the title. The other title option was going to “a sandwich and a cup of tea” as that’s all Mum & Dad ever wanted for lunch.

None of us really wanted dessert although Dad always seemed to feel obliged to both finish his meal and have a proper dessert! He had the cheesecake which was strawberry (not sure if it always is).

Mum had a crispy treat which I think she ate at some point during the trip.

Marie and I had chocolate chip cookies which went in the fridge and I ate at some point. I really like the WPE cookies.

This would have cost us $82.86 but we used 4 QS credits. Had we been paying OOP I think we would have shared and wouldn’t have got dessert though.

By the time dinner time came we just wanted to have a lazy night so I suggested Marie and I pop round to Goods to Go and get a takeaway. Dad wanted to come to see what they had so we drove round so we wouldn’t have to worry about carrying it all. Well we got there and there was a problem with the kitchen so no hot food. Given how close POR/FQ are we just went there deciding on POR as Marie and I are going there next year and wanted to check it out. The food court there is much better than OKW so we had some time choosing. They do "to go" boxes after the tills so we had to pack it all up ourselves. In the end we got:

Mum – Chicken Nuggets & Fries. Mum enjoyed these. They’re always good proper chicken breast and the coating is tasty.

Marie – hot dog nuggets and fries. Not as good as Casey’s and she didn’t finish them.

Me and Dad – Angus Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. I haven’t made a note if we enjoyed this but I like Disney burgers and don’t remember not liking it!

We didn’t do any substitutions this time and all got dessert. We also got bottled drinks to put in the fridge for another time.
Dad got cheesecake again.

The rest of us got carrot cake which was eaten gradually over the next few days. I really enjoyed this (I ate it in two halfs). It was much nicer than the standard QS carrot cake you get.

I don’t have a receipt but I watched the CM ring it all up and it would have been around $80. It cost us 4 QS credits and we didn’t eat it all. Again we said we should have shared!

Sorry for any blurry photos but no one really wanted to wait for me to take them before they started eating!

Day 2 - Mk & The Grand Floridian

Today was an MK day. I’d done some ADR jigging before we came thanks to a change in park hours. We’d originally had a Be Our Guest breakfast booked at 8.05am. We’d normally have done Crystal Palace but I didn’t think Mum & Dad would be too keen on another character meal so BoG was the perfect alternative. They then changed the MK hours to an 8am opening removing any advantage of a pre-park breakfast so I cancelled it. Lunch had been Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen but I was ever hopeful of a BoG lunch booking and in the end just cancelled Skipper Canteen. My parents aren't big lunch eaters – hence the alternative thread title – so I didn’t see the point in a TS lunch. Instead I rearranged our dinner ADRs and booked us Narcoossee’s for later. As the trip got closer I managed to secure a BoG ADR for 10.40am. Working on the theory that we’d be up early and therefore need lunch early I went with it and managed to convince everyone it would be fine!

Breakfast was in the villa taking advantage of the full kitchen. I don’t have picture so I think we all just had toast or a bagel.

As expected we were quite happy to have lunch at 10.40am. We stopped on the way from Frontierland to Fantasyland to pre-order our food as we’d heard that was much quicker. Even doing it 30 mins before made a difference I think as there seemed to be a big crowd inside where you order. We went straight through to a CM who double checked our order and took our payment (QS credits for us) then we were able to choose a seat. We went for the Ballroom as we hadn’t been able to get in there the last time and I think it’s the nicest. We got a table at the end which I think was better than being crowded in the centre. The way BoG works is you help yourself to drinks, cutlery etc and then your food is brought to you using the technology of your magic band/park ticket. They bring it all out together so mains and desserts at the same time.

We are so boring we all had Croque Monsieur which I think may have been down to the time of day. Everyone enjoyed this but I just think it’s ok. I’m definitely not being lazy and getting it next time!

For dessert I got The Masters Cupcake which is a chocolate flavoured sponge with the “grey stuff” on top. I love this cupcake and wish they did it elsewhere so I didn’t need an ADR to get one!

Everyone else got the éclair l’orange. Marie didn’t enjoy this. She found the chocolate bitter and doesn’t like chocolate and orange together so who knows why she ordered it. Mum & Dad enjoyed it though. I don't seem to have a separate picture but one can been seen in the background of the Croque Monsieur picture.

The way the drinks work here was great for us. Marie and I both had fountain drinks and Mum & Dad had tea. When we moved onto dessert I fancied tea too so was able to switch from my diet coke to tea, as did Marie. The cups are at the drinks station too so you don’t need to go and ask for an insulated cup.

This was one of those situations where Mum had said before the holiday she wasn’t bothered about eating at BoG but once there I know she really liked it and was impressed with the theming. I didn’t make a note of cost but it would have been around the $80 mark again. We paid 4 QS credits. We didn’t tip here and I’m never sure if it’s expected but I’m assuming it’s not.

Mid-afternoon we went for a Dole Whip. Dad always seemed to be asking for ice cream for dessert so we thought he’d appreciate it. We were all hot and thirsty and it was just the thing. Now I’m sure when it was served at the previous Aloha Isle (Sunshine Tree Terrace and Aloha Isle have swapped locations) that you could get pineapple, vanilla and pineapple/vanilla swirl as well as various drink options for the float. I could only see pineapple Dole Whip on the menu so we all had a pineapple float.

Excellent as usual and enjoyed by everyone. Very refreshing on a hot day. They're also massive so luckily we found a table nearby to eat/drink them. It would have cost us around $5.29 each but cost us 4 snack credits.

Dinner was Narcoossee’s. Marie and I had eaten here for the first time last trip and really liked it. We reckoned Mum & Dad would like it too. Last time we’d both had surf and turf with a fillet steak and lobster tail. Now you have to pay extra for the lobster tail if on DDP. In the run up to the trip I’d decided I was just going to go for it and pay for the lobster tail but on the day decided to just get something else. This was the first time we’d been since the changes to DDP and possible substitutions. Our server offered us the option to substitute dessert for a heart of romaine salad or the lobster bisque. We all decided to go for that as we still had carrot cake in the villa.

We got some sourdough bread with salted butter to start.

I chose the salad to improve my vegetable intake. Just the right size of portion and nice flavours.

Everyone else got the lobster bisque which was again a nice size and everyone enjoyed it so much I wished I’d gotten it!

Dad and I had Alaskan Line Caught Halibut - Blue Crab Yuca Hash Browns, Asparagus, Red Roux Cream, Brentwood Corn Macque Choux. Now I’ll admit to not knowing what much of that is but this was a nice dish. I don’t know that I’d choose it again but I did enjoy it.

Mum had Pan-roasted Joyce Farms Chicken Breast – Fregola Sarda Pasta Sofrito, Chicken-Pistachio Sausage, Baby Beets, Roasted Carrots, Cipollini Onion, Gala Apple Butter. Mum really enjoyed this. I tried the sausage and it was nice. Interesting flavours.

Marie got the Grass fed Filet Mignon – Boniato-Potato Mash, Broccolini, Red Wine-Oxtail Reduction. She enjoyed this but isn’t a huge fan of the mash over there. I don’t think it was in her head that she could sub it for fries.

Our server was professional and knowledgeable, chatty without being overbearing or annoying. I love that Narcoossee’s never feels “too posh” and it’ll be on my list for next year again. This meal would have been $233.22 but we used 8 TS credits as it’s a signature. We left the 20% again which was $43.80.

Day 3 - Shopping & Epcot

In an effort to ease us in gently I had planned an afternoon/evening at Epcot with dinner at Le Cellier. That meant breakfast and lunch were unplanned. We all pottered about the villa doing our own thing for breakfast. I made scrambled eggs and toast.

Lunch was in the food court at Premium Outlets on Vineland in LBV. A bit of a waste of money given we had DDP however we were hungry and still had stuff we wanted to do. Going back to Disney to eat would just have taken too long.
I wanted something different so went to one of the oriental stations and got Orange Chicken and fried rice. I also got a gyoza thingy. I haven’t made notes about this but it was nice enough.

Everyone else got a hot dog. They were just ok.

Marie's chilli hot dog.

I don’t have receipts for this either for some reason.

Dinner was an old favourite of ours, Le Cellier and was the reason I hadn’t had steak at Narcoossee’s! We checked in at 5.20pm for our 5.30pm ADR and only waited a few minutes before we were seated. We sat outside and Mum really like the setting there.

We were hoping to be offered a substitution here as we’d have gotten the cheddar cheese soup. It wasn’t offered and we didn’t ask so not sure if they just don’t do it.
As always with Le Cellier we were given bread that included the pretzel breadsticks. I love these but they gave us the same basket for 4 as they do for 2 so we only got 2 breadsticks. I don’t know that Mum & Dad were that bothered but I felt I had to leave some for them!

They do the pomegranate lemonade here so I had to have it and had to take a pic!

Dad had the Black Angus Ribeye – Crisp Fingerling Potatoes, Nueske’s Bacon Vinaigrette, Frisee, Heirloom Carrots, Cabnernet Butter. He enjoyed this.

The rest of us had the Le Cellier Filet Mignon – AAA Canadian Tenderloin, Mushroom Risotto, Asparagus-Tomato Relish, Truffle-Butter Sauce. This was excellent as usual although does tend to be a little salty. I had to say to Mum & Dad to try it first as they always just automatically reach for the salt! I really had to break them of that habit on this trip!

This is my cleared plate! (Except for that tomato)

For dessert I would normally order the crème brulee but fancied a change. Dad, Marie and I all got the Nanaimo Pie – Chocolate-Hazelnut Crust, White Chocolate Bar, house-made Coconut Ice Cream. This was nice but nothing special.

I think the Happy Birthday was for Marie!

Mum had the Chocolate Whisky Trifle – Malted Milk Panna Cotta, Caramel Popcorn, Whisky Caramel Sauce, Buttered Popcorn Gelato. She really liked this.

This would have cost $282.19 but cost us 8 TS credits. The 20% tip was $53.99 but we rounded up to $54 and again charged it to the room. Our server was friendly and efficient.
