I love your title, I can't even guess how many times we said exactly the same thing.
We had four nights on-site but without dining plan at the end of our trip and I cancelled a LOT of my ADRs so we could eat off-site instead, prices without the dining plan were a bit of a shock. We stayed at the Holiday Inn too, wasn't too sure how the food would be so ate before we arrived! We loved Olivia's, particularly the lunch menu. I thought it was a bit of a hidden gem and will visit OKW just to eat there next year. We also skipped a massive line by pre-ordering our Be Our Guest food, I'm surprised how few people had actually done it. Great tip about being able to swap dessert for soup or salad at Narcoossee's. I had the halibut your dad had, the hash was amazing, one of the best thing I ate on the trip but the fish was a bit bland. Le Cellier looks gorgeous! |

Day 4 - DHS & Boardwalk
Breakfast was in the villa again today. Marie had bought waffle mix with the Garden Grocer order but didn’t realise the villas at OKW weren’t equipped with a waffle maker so she ended up buying one in Walmart the previous day. Obviously that meant she had to make waffles! She made 2 large ones and she, Mum & Dad shared them. I had scrambled egg again which I had a lot as I was enjoyed being able to have more than a bagel or muffin. This morning was DHS and we had a dinner ADR booked at Boardwalk but no specific lunch plans. As we often do we ended up at Backlot Express for lunch.
I had the 1/3 lb Bacon Cheese burger with fries. Now this used to be an amazing burger that came with onion straws but today no onion straws and the burger bun was dry. The burger itself was ok but I was disappointed. Marie had a chilli cheese hotdog with fries which she really enjoyed. She has that quite often. Mum and Dad both had chicken and waffles which they said was really tasty. Of course Dad wanted a cup of tea which I didn’t realise when I ordered so he was a bit miffed. Backlot Express is one of those QS places where you get given cups and help yourself to fountain and hot drinks so he considered just getting it in a soda cup but didn’t bother in the end. For dessert I had the Darth Vader cupcake which was peanut butter and chocolate. This was nice but as usual with QS lunches I didn’t manage to finish it. Marie had the BB-8 cupcake which was lemon flavoured. She didn’t rate this. Mum & Dad both had chocolate mousse which they said was quite nice. Look at the difference in them though! Mum took the half filled one. Overall I was a bit disappointed with Backlot Express as I’ve enjoyed it on previous visits. Bit annoyed about the onion straws! I didn’t make a note of cost but I’m guessing around the $70-80 mark again. We paid 4 QS credits. Dinner was somewhere new, Trattoria al Forno at the Boardwalk. I chose it mainly because I thought my parents might like a wander round the Boardwalk area and there wasn’t really anywhere else we fancied (well I like the look of Flying Fish but Marie doesn’t like seafood). We had left in plenty of time but I took a wrong turn and we ended up at the Epcot parking booths. A quick turnaround and we arrived at Boardwalk 5 minutes before our ADR time. The restaurant is next to the Flying Fish with a bar area in between the two. We checked in and had a short wait before we were shown to our table. The waiting area was empty expect for another couple and the staff were busy setting up a table with iced water for guests. We were served by Bryan who was very friendly and chatty. He seemed very knowledgeable about the menu and was very efficient. To start Bryan brought us out ciabatta with olive oil to dip. It was nice enough but I’m generally not a fan of bread dipped in oil. We weren’t offered any substitutions here so we had a main and dessert. Another pomegranate lemonade picture coming up. I had tagliatelle carbonara. It was nice but didn’t blow me away. Mum had the Chicken Breast alla Parmigiana which she really enjoyed. Dad had the Pork Chop alla Milanese and he also thought it was really nice. As you can see he’d started eating when I took the pic! This came with crushed potatoes which are hidden by the pork. Marie had this. It was the House-made ravioli which the menu describes as having “seasonal flavours” and I’ll admit to not remembering what they were. Cheese was involved. It was also the smallest portion of anything we’d seen on Disney property and she was disappointed. Taste wise it was fine and we were glad we weren’t paying for it. For dessert I had the cannoli which was filled with chocolate and pistachio cream. These again were small and tasted nice but weren’t amazing. Mum had the Zeppoli (almond sugar coated fried dough) which came with dipping sauces. We all had a try of these as Mum couldn’t manage them all. They were nice but the chocolate dipping sauce was bitter and the orange coloured one wasn’t great. I don’t remember what it was. The other was caramel and was the nicest. Dad had the Affogato al Café which was espresso with gelato in it. He really liked this but was always on the hunt for “just an ice cream” for dessert on holiday. I kept saying he should just ask but if it wasn’t on the menu he never did. I don't have a picture of this for some reason but it was coffee with ice cream in it. Marie as she always does in an Italian had Tiramisu (it was the only reason she agreed to try here). She said it was nice but again as you can see it was quite small. Looking back at the photos the portion sizes were all on the small side but I suppose you get used to such big portions that a “normal” one seems small in comparison! It was enough food for us but Marie’s was just too small and it’s put her off going back. The food was nice but nothing special and I don’t know that we’d make a special trip here but we wouldn’t rule out a return. Reading back what I've written it all seems very negative but it wasn't bad - just not special. I didn’t photograph the receipt here but we left a $26 tip so it must have been around $130. We paid 4 TS credits. |

You dont often hear of the trattoria. It looks nice enough but not wow to make you want to go back.

We tried Trattoria too and would agree with you. It was ok but not something I'd probably go back to. Great photos.
