I guess we're grown ups now? Nah, maybe next week! Oct 2016 Part 1 - Day 3 Flying Failures

Index

Day 3 - 06.10.16

This morning we were up and out by 8:30. The plan was to eat breakfast at Hash House a Go Go then have a chilled morning by the pool.

When we got to the Linq and found the stairs up to Hash House we didn’t really like the site that greeted us! The waiting area was full to the brim and we overheard the staff say that there was a 90 minute wait for a table... no thank you! We would return another day, a lot earlier!

Back out of the Linq we found a place down the street we went down the first night called ‘Off The Strip’...clever! In there, like most places there was somebody to greet you and ask how many in the party, a person who took you to your table and gave you your menus then your waiter/waitress, so many different staff members its crazy!

Anyways, we ordered coffee and OJ then Ross had waffles with bacon and I had French toast. Mine was beautiful but I think Ross had been looking forward to Hash House and his waffles were a poor substitute! Whilst we were eating I used the wifi to google good spots for breakfast! I had a big list of food places I had made whilst reading trip reports etc but I had managed to leave it at home and could only remember Wicked Spoons, Hash House and Grand Lux Cafe!

I really enjoyed mine it was so yummy, Ross thought his was ok but I think he had his sights set on Hash House so this was a little disapointing!
We paid the bill which was $50 including tip and far more than it was worth then headed back to the hotel. We skyped Ariana (who was having her own holiday with my Dad and Step Mum in Peterbough) to say hello and goodnight then got ready and went down to the pool.

It was a lovely pool, nice and quiet with no kids splashing about! There were loads of beds free but most of them were under the umbrellas and totally in the shade but the girls managed to find us some that had some sun on them. About 10 minutes later she came back to tell us that some beds in the sun were free so we switched to those instead.
We spent a good 4 hours by the pool, it was lovely and relaxing. I read some of my book, Ross watched Goth on his phone. Every time we got a bit hot we would go for a dip to cool off, it was paradise!

I snapchatted this to my friends back home... I'm pretty sure they appriciated it! #legsorhotdogs

At about 1 we ordered food and drink. I got a strawberry daiquiri and a plate of fresh fruit (I was still fairly full from breakfast) and Ross had a Bud Lite and a cheese burger. I think the total was about $55 including tip, I seem to remember my drink being sickeningly expensive and the fruit being really really not worth what we paid for it! Ross loved his burger though.

At 3pm it was so ridiculously hot I could actually feel my skin burning like it was on fire and couldn’t take anymore so we went back up to the room to get showered and ready for Fremont Street.

Tonight we would be ordering and Uber for the first time! We ordered whilst we were walking to the elevator and the driver was waiting outside for us by the time we got to the bottom, handy! It cost $13 and he got us to Fremont Street for 5:30. He told us the best spot to order one back to the hotel which was really handy.

Wandering up Fremont Street I really wondered what the hell we were doing there. It looked like a dive and there were various street performers that were questionable...like the two guys wearing mankinis and ‘playing’ blow up guitars, or the ‘chipendales’ bending girls over for photos... nice, classy!

We got to the top and decided to find somewhere to eat. Heat Attack Grill really didn’t sound very appetising.

I spotted a Dennys and suggested that, I knew it was safe in there but Ross shot that idea down since we agreed not to eat in the same place twice this holiday. Then I saw a Tony Romas was inside one of the casinos, we had eaten in one in Orlando last holiday and it was yummy so we headed in all optimistic! Wrong! The place was so gross and grotty and we were elbow length from the tables either side of us.
Ross ordered the Kickin Shrimp to start which was what he had in Orlando last time, and the full rack of baby back ribs and I ordered the pulled pork burger. They obviously don’t understand what ‘starter’ means here as everything came all at once. Ross enjoyed his although he was slightly disappointed the shrimp didn’t come with chopsticks like it did last time. Mine was awful. The bottom of my burger was soggy and the pork was gross. While the couple next to us got offered a dessert menu, we were just handed the bill. Good job we wanted out of there asap! We paid $55 including a small tip and ran! Sorry, no photos but they would only prove how grotty this place was, the food wasn’t visually appealing either!

Ross hadn’t gambled all day and needed his fix so I suggested going to the Golden Nugget since it was the only place I had heard of here.

I played on the big wheel thing since I enjoyed that the other day but this time I lost every time! The girl at the table was nice though. She told us that she was on her way to LA when her car broke down in Vegas so she ended up staying, met up with her old high school boyfriend and now they are living together, sweet!
Ross played some blackjack and roulette but didn’t win much so I dragged him away before he gambled away all the beer money!

Once outside again we had an hour or so before we could check in for the zip line so we wandered up and down taking in the sights. And boy was there some sights! A guy waltzed up to us and started rapping about god and trying to sell us his ‘number 1 album’, a guy in a really bad Scream costume asking for money for photos, a guy with a cardboard signed that said ‘f**k you – tips please’, two spray paint artists, magicians, and two of the fugliest girls in the world wearing nothing but fishnet tights, knickers and stickers on their nipples dancing for tips with their children in buggies next to them... nice! Ross needed a beer after that and managed not to go to the bar with the dancing girls on it (I’ve trained him well) he got a 2 pinter for $10.

The light show started so we stood and watched that. I’m not sure if they do a different show every time but this one was British themed and they played songs by The Who, including my fave song of all time, Pinball Wizard. I loved the show it was incredible and like nothing I’ve ever seen before... it was no Wishes though! My dad is a huge fan of The Who so I recorded it and sent it to him which he loved.

We watched the spray painters for a while and we were going to buy one of the pictures of the strip but then when I saw what he was painting next I knew we would be getting that one!

We paid $40 for the painting and they kept it to one side for us to collect later on.

It was almost time for the zip line so we went to check in to get our wrist bands and waited for our boarding time of 8:40. Once our time came up on the board we headed up the stairs and got strapped into our harnesses and got given bags to store our things. They were offering helmets with Go Pros attached but we declined.
Once we were all hooked up we waited to head up in the lift, we waited around 30 minutes and whilst we waited we watched everyone else come up the stairs, many of them being told they couldn’t use any personal recording devices and getting mad!
It wasn’t long till they were loading our group into the lift and heading up! I started to feel iiiiiiiiiill! I was so nervous!
So when it was our turn we went up and lay tummy down on the blue platforms while the guys hooked us up to the zipline. There are 4 lines and we took the two middle ones. The blue platforms went down so we were left dangling and the guys told us that when the door went down we would set off and that we should give ourselves a good push off using the blue platforms.
The door went down and we could see the entire length of Fremont Street in front of us, it was quite a sight! And then we were off! Ross said ‘race ya’ before pushing off and zooming ahead.
It was the most amazing experience, literally flying down Fremont Street under the lights! Everyone else went zooming ahead me, fatties! I could see everybody else had reached the end and I wasn’t too far off but I was slowing down very fast. I was thinking to myself ‘keep going! ’ but no... mere metres from the end I came to a grinding halt and was dangling there.
Everybody down on the floor was staring up at me, one lady telling me to swim for it so I tried breast stroke but didn’t get far! I felt like I was left there for ages until one of the guys hooked himself up to my line and pulled himself along to me mission impossible style and dragged me back with him while I did my best Super Man impression and everybody below clapped. I wished I’d had a few drinks before!
Ross thought it was hilarious of course, cause he’s a plick (replace the L with and R and you’ll get it). The guy who rescued me asked me how much I weighed and said I was probably too light to ride... no shhhhugar Sherlock! I could still feel myself shaking, it really wasn’t nice hanging there so far above the ground!
We went to have a look at our photos, Ross said we couldn’t not get them because of how hilarious the ones of my being recued are... like I said, plick. That set us back $45 but we got all 30 or so photos sent to my email address which was great, although the photographer could do with brushing up on their focusing skills! Here are some of those hilarious photos for your viewing pleasure.

I’m so pleased we did the zip line at night under the lights, it was a truly incredible experience (despite the little hitch!) and well worth paying a little extra to fly at night.

Once we had sorted the photos we collected the painting and wandered back towards where the Uber guy dropped us off to order another one. At that end of the street there was a ‘Dancing DJ’ who was doing a set at the only people dancing were two really drunk middle aged ladies wearing a lot less than they should and a really really old couple who looked like they’d be at home in a ball room listening to jazz but they were raving it up with the rest of them! You’ve gotta love this place!

Bye Fremont Street!

The Uber back to the Vdara was $12. Our driver, William was really nice and chatted to us about life in Vegas and as an Uber driver. We tipped him $2.

Once back in the room we watched the fountains for a bit (we never got board of our view!) and went to bed at 11pm.

Would I recommend Fremont Street? I’m not sure. It certainly wasn’t a place I’d take children, some of the performers were very seedy. It was fun once the sun went down and the light show started and the food and drink were certainly cheaper than the strip. I’d probably have enjoyed it more if I’d had a couple of cocktails! Ross loved it though he thought it was loads of fun. We really really loved the zip line though, that was one of the best experiences we’ve ever done.
I’d probably tell people to give Fremont Street a chance, just be prepared to see the sights and make sure you have a couple of drinks and go with the flow!

Chicken Wing Count - 23 (no wings today!)

How brave were you dangling over Freemont St - looks scary. Never been but friends had the same conclusion as you - not somewhere you'd take small children. Really enjoying this report

I didn't really fancy the zipline over Fremont Street, but you are selling it well to me. I think we might go and give Fremont Street a chance but the zipline remains to be decided on!

If I'm selling it to you even though I got stuck I must be doing a good job on the shorter zipline you aren't as high and youre in a sitting up position like the mini zipwires you get at the local park so maybe that will be an option if you dont fancy the big one!

It was cool once I'd got over the weird people, definitely not for kids or prudes! x
