Steam Train - day out
Report – Steam train trip to Derbyshire 28/5/12
It was called the Peak Forester. The engine - Oliver Cromwell (70018) is kept at York museum but she pulls various trips around the UK. The trip was organised by the Railway Touring Company if you want to see their site. We were supposed to depart at 9:34 from Kings Cross. However, on arrival at KX we were all asked to get local service to Finsbury Park. The engine was in the sidings at Willesden but a previous Network Rail train had damaged points so they had to be fixed, Then a cherry picker had caught one of the overhead cables and brought it down. Neither item anything to do with our train but by the time it was all sorted we didn't leave Finsbury Park until 10:58 - an hour and a half late. One guy “loses it” with one of the stewards but when he language became profane myself and another guy intervened. There were kids present on the platform. There was no need for that sort of language and it wasn’t the stewards fault. Having worked in transport I know how irrational somemebers of the public can be. In fact, throughout the day the Company would do its best to make sure we had a good time. So we board and as we had booked Premier we are served with a full English breakfast which was delicious and most welcome! So we head up towards Hitchin and Peterborough. At Peterborough they have to call an ambulance. There had been a "blow back" on the hot plate and one of the drivers had been badly burned. So that added another half an hour to our delay. We battled on towards Derby. We finally arrive at Rowsley 2 hours (It's near Matlock and Bakewell in Derbyshire - my birth county). Because of the weather it was like a sauna on board. Spent most of my time hanging out the carriage end window taking video of the beautiful countryside. At least there was a draft! We then discover that they only take cash on the train for drinks etc and having had a bottle of champers we'd run out. So at Rowsley we had to get a bus to Bakewell - the nearest place for an ATM. We just about had enough time to get cash and an ice cream. We head back to Rowsley where they haven't filled the train with water or changed it to the front of the train for southbound journey. More delays. The bridge at Bakewell: Still with me ? So by now we are running 3 hours late. When we set off back dinner is served - roast beef and all the trimmings. ... really good and most welcome. People are now worried about getting their connections as we are not due in at Kings Cross until 11:45p.m. The two guys we shared our table with (from Ashford in Kent (and gay - so we had some real good laughs)) got off at Peterborough to catch a fast train to London. The sun goes down but it's still hot on the train. So lots of white wine and bottles of water! We hit Kings Cross at 11:50 and Darrin and I just ran like hell. If you know the Underground connection it's bloody miles to the Metropolitan line! We managed to get the 00:03 - last train to Uxbridge and arrive back in Harrow at 00:30. Quick shower and into bed. Darrin had to be up again at 5a.m.! So whilst basically good and excellent food we are both completely knackered! Edited at 11:09 AM. |

What a lot of delays, whilst they were nobodys fault it must of been annoying...and no need for the swearing passenger.
But over all... it looks like you had a fabulous day.
