私たちは、東京ディズニーリゾートに行きます G&D Day 1

Tokyo Disneyland / Disney Sea 2013 Trippie

The Japanese characters mean:
We are going to Tokyo Disney Resort!

DAY ONE ( 29/8) CHASING THE “RISING” SUN –

(Before I begin our report I’d just like to point out that I and my partner have a bizarre sense of humour at times –if it isn’t to your taste then we apologise in advance but there is no intention to hurt or harm. Also the views expressed here are totally mine. We will never all agree on things but I just say it as I see it. For Dibbers, you may mind some duplication of items that were covered in James’ and Gemma’s report back in January (2013) but I cover them from my point of view.
This will be quite a photo intensive trippie so some days may be split into 2 parts.
OK – that out of the way let’s press on.)

Where to begin? Well, amazing, astonishing, a culture shock, excruciating politeness and an absolute delight all come to mind. And….we will be returning.
It’s a bright blue sky with a promise of a warm day. Our taxi arrives 10:30 a.m. on the dot and our suitcases are stored in the boot (trunk). Although our baggage allowance is 3 x 32 kgs EACH (British Airways Club World) we have bought light weight cases and two of them are currently filled with air bag packing! Our Westie, Blair, will be in the capable hands of Jenny (Eeyore Rocks – to Dibbers) and he doesn’t seem particularly phased that we are leaving him for 2 weeks.
Within 25 minutes we are at Terminal 5 at Heathrow and doing bag drop as Darrin had checked in online yesterday.

TERMINAL 5 HEATHROW

We head for security and join the Fastrack line. The family in front of us don’t seem to know the procedures so it takes a little time for them to grasp that belts have to be removed and that non soft shoes must be taken off to be x – rayed. The security chap asks: Do you have any liquids?
They reply : No!
It’s at that point he pulls a half consumed bottle of fruit juice out of one of their bags and says: So this wouldn’t be a liquid then? (We note the wry appearance of his face.) Once that is disposed of it’s our turn to lay up the trays with our bits and bobs. Once through the arch we proceed into the terminal proper where the various eateries and shops are. The first thing I spot is Dr. Who’s TARDIS and a Supreme Dalek. It’s an exhibition to celebrate 50 years of the TV show. Now, I know we have to transport ourselves 5946 miles but I didn’t think it would be with Matt Smith!

TARDIS PHOTO

We head to the Club Lounge to grab a second breakfast and only just make it in time to a couple of croissants and some coffee. They are changing over to lunch and within minutes, various curries, salmon salads and whatnot appear where muesli and corn flakes had once been. 2 glasses of chilled Chardonnay go down very nicely, thank you.

BA LOUNGE

It’s not long before our gate is called – C52. Now, if you know Terminal 5, you will understand it takes some 15 minutes or so to get to the C satellite by the little train. We wait in the holding area for a few minutes and then we are boarding. Our plane is a Boeing 777 -300 as opposed to a 747.

PLANE PIC

Onto the plane and it’s seats 10 E&F:

SEAT PIC

We love this arrangement. Once you are in your space you are self - contained. TV, drawer, flat bed seat and nobody crowding you. The only disadvantage is when visiting the toilet. The outer beds have to be climbed over. (Trying to do that without waking a sleeping occupant takes some doing in that night twilight they create when they switch the main lights off.) Anyhow, champagne is served and we settle in for our long haul. Japan is eight hours ahead of the U.K. and by the miracle of flight combined with the earth’s rotation we will arrive at 9a.m. the following day.
Pre dinner drinks are offered and whilst Darrin chooses Kir Royal I go for my usual whisky (a Glenlivet 12 year old)with a touch of lemonade. Once downed they offer a second round.
Dinner is superb. We both opted for the belly pork preceded by Japanese appetisers – presumably put on the menu to get people “in the mood”. There’s a selection of cheese and biscuits and two small bars of chocolate – one milk, one plain.

FOOD PICS

We settle down to watch a film. Amongst the many on offer are The Croods, Olympus has fallen, Oblivion, The Amazing Burt Wunderstone but we both go for Ratatouille. A bit of a Pixar / Disney fix !

RATATOUILLE

Later into the flight we start to watch Bates Motel (a prequel to the Psycho film) which is obviously an American TV series and because of when we arrive at Tokyo we are half way through the first episode. I shall have to check Amazon.com to see if I can get it on DVD. (I later discover it’s starting on Sky Universal after we get back.) Our flight path has taken us over Sweden, Finland and Russia’s Siberia (where it was minus 70 outside), just almost grazing the top end of Mongolia and North Korea before we come in over the most northern of Japan’s four main islands which on a map look like a dragon with its head raised – have a look!

MAPS

Finally, I must mention the cabin crew. They were fabulous. On Darrin’s side was an Asian guy who had a brilliant sense of humour and on my side was a lady who I got chatting to about Disney. I shall be writing to BA on our return to praise these remarkable members of staff. I must have impressed her as she gave us four half size bottles of Tempranillo to take with us.
We had settled down to try and get some sleep. Darrin managed four hours but I got none. I had a bit of a throat twinge. What is it with my throat and flying? (I had bunged tea tree oil up my nostrils at the start of the flight and it did prevent me catching any germs.) I just could not doze off. So I lie on my flat - bed listening for the jangle of breakfast crockery. When breakfast does arrive there is juice, muesli, fresh fruit, croissants and pain au chocolat followed by bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs and gallons of tea and coffee. (Way better than that manky bacon roll you get on Virgin!) Shame they don’t do a cup of deep sleep!

It's a great start Geoff . The food looks delicious, well jealous of those Club world seats! I recorded Bates Motel on Sky the other night so I'm hoping it's good. Great pics, looking forward to reading more
