In the footsteps of Lewis & Clark - Day 8 - Part Two

DAY 8 - Part Two – Sun, Sea and Beach Blanket

Saturday 28th June 2014

I forgot to say that prior to lunch at Boudin's I'd had a quick natter with Johnny Depp.

Yes it's a branch of Madam Tussaud's. It's on the front at Fisherman's Wharf. The Blackstone group (Merlin Entertainments to us) has spent a fortune revamping the place and it has a new manager, john from York in teh good old UK! They were allowing you to take photos with Johnny in order to lure you in.

And on a shopping spree I picked up these babies:

However, back to reality.

We get back to the Kimpton Monaco and collapse on our bed. The sunburn is realy starting to sting. I swear by a lukewarm bath. It hurts like mad when you first get in but it takes that initial heat away. I smother us in Vaseline moisturiser and the one we have which we bought here contains coconut oil. Just putting that immediately relieves the burn although Darrin sits with a bag of ice on his forehead to begin with. It’s my neck (left side) and legs that have caught the worse. Once we are washed and moisturised we head downstairs to the lounge. Every evening from 5p.m. to 6 is wine tasting. We settle with our full glasses and start to chat to the couple also sharing the table with us.

Tonight we are headed out to North Beach to go see Beach Blanket Babylon - a review show. We eat at Pantarei (it means "everything flows" in Greek but it's actualy an Italian restaurant - go figure!) it's on Columbus Avenue. We've been here in the past - once when it was Halloween and our meal was served by Quasimodo being scourged by a mad scientist! It has lost some of its original appeal and I think next time we'll try somwhere else. A Mexica, Don Pistos is on the list for next time.

The revue show at the Club Fugazi on Green Street has been running for 40 years.

Even Prince Charles and Camilla have seen it. The story is that Snow White, who has an extremely grating voice, heeheeheeheehee and waves her hands like a stiff windmill is looking for her prince. She is taken for a trip around the world in search of him. The Rome and Paris sequences are particularly funny due mainly to Tammy Nelson who plays an Italian Mama and a tarty French lady of the night. The Jewish Momma – Hava Tequia is excrutiatingly funny! Into this is added what’s going on in the news at the moment. You need some knowledge of American politics but also world issues get included. Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin feature strongly in what can only be described as a Bee-atch fest. They even get a Glee sequence in there along with Justin Bieber. There is also the Queen, Prince William, Kate and baby George. Quote from the Queen – you have diapers, I have dia-monds! Prince Harry is presented a lethario!
There is a cruel Barbara Streisand sequence which just has everybody on the floor and the flying Madonna (the singer) doing a song Wicked style brings down the house. You can enjoy a drink or two whilst watching the show by the way. No children are permitted at late shows.

The finale is what BBB is famous for. The hats! One worn is the whole scenic scape of San Francisco complete with a cable car going up and down a hill. Snow White has found her prince who turns out to be Elvis. Her hat is a massive wedding cake which opens up to show all 7 dwarfs.

We make our way back to the hotel on the bus. A quick coffee made with our trusty travel kettle and two coffee bags and we are more than ready to hit the sack.

Re the sunburn – our people are currently suing the Weather Channel for their wishy washy forecast for the day. We are also buying shares in Vaseline Intensive Care considering how much we have used to abate the red skin.

And just like Seattle the overnight fee for parking -$52 a night!

Car not used today either.

Yep! And that was $52 x 3 nights! Parking in US cities is not cheap. Normally I'd say forego a car in places like San Francisco but it's all the faff of giving one up and then having to re-hire when you move on. It bites into your time. Given a shuttle is $75 downtown SF to airport then it kinds of breaks even parking it in the city.

What a great day. The show sounds great, unlike the epic sunburn! Do like the look of those shoes!
