Le Cellier Steakhouse

Le Cellier Steakhouse

We checked in at Le Cellier, and was given one of those pager thingies, that buzzes and flashes when your table is ready. Once it gave the signal, we were shown to our table. The first thing that struck me about the restaurant was how dark it was… but given that it means the cellar, I guess that’s to be expected. It felt cosy and inviting, and we sat down at a table right near the rest rooms, which was very handy as I really needed to use them!

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a signature restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for two credits per person.

In our experience, at all Disney signature restaurants, you are given a bread basket when you are first seated at your table. Le Cellier was no exception, and despite having sampled several dishes during the day at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, we were actually all quite hungry.

The bread basket came with butter that was topped with sea salt, and brown maple sugar. The bread rolls were: sourdough, multigrain, and pretzel breadsticks. The pretzel sticks, the server told us, was because where the city they come from hosts the biggest Oktoberfest outside of Germany.

Appetizers…

Me: Assortment of Artisanal Cheese – Chef’s Selection of Accompaniments ($15)

Him: Canadian Maple Whisky-Cured Salmon – Heirloom Radish, Orange Supremes, Caviar, Caper Cream, Everything Bagel Crumbs ($15)

The Boy: Charcuterie – Chef’s Handcrafted Meats, House Pickles, Grilled Sourdough Bread ($17)

My husband did do a few voice recordings of what we ate during our meals and what we thought. We also asked the server if we could record her telling us what each of the items were on both the cheese plate, and charcuterie, but I’m finding it hard to understand everything that she said!

Unlike other restaurants, where we’ve had this sort of thing before, we didn’t get a little card that tells us what each thing is. A shame, as I like to be as thorough as I can when describing everything. I’ve actually done some online sleuthing, trying to decipher some of the things she says. Actually, you know what, I’ll pop the audio over the photo, and you can help me figure it out!

On the artisanal cheese plate there was Reypenaer Gouda with a Fig-Almond Cake; Cheddar with Raisins; ? with local raw honey; ? with Marcona Almonds; Valdeon Blue Cheese with Cherry something, and some crostini to go with.

I am not a fan of blue cheese at all, so they got left on the side, the others were nice cheeses, and had an interesting set of accompaniments.

Steve really enjoyed his smoked salmon, which was full of flavour, and was nicely plated too.

The Charcuterie came presented on a slate platter and included: Asian Style Sausage; Peameal Bacon with Maple Mustard Seed; Bacon Pork Sausage; Smoked Chorizo; ? Cheese with Marcona Almonds; Grilled Sourdough; and Bread and Butter Pickles, that are grown at The Land in Epcot. I’ve also made a video to help with the name of the cheese!

Entrées…

Me: Le Cellier Filet Mignon – AAA Canadian Tenderloin, Mushroom risotto, Heirloom Toy Box Tomatoes, Truffle-Butter Sauce ($49)

Him: Seared Canadian Bison Strip Loin – Heirloom Carrots, Pease Pudding, Truffle Béarnaise Sauce ($50)

The Boy: Angus New York Strip – Garlic-Herb Rösti, Wilted Kale, Cabernet Butter ($49)

Oh my gosh, my filet mignon was absolutely amazing, it tasted so good! The mushroom risotto was a bit too salty for my tastes, and very mushroom-y. But that steak though! Steve really enjoyed the bison, which was very tender. And Liam liked his steak too, which he had without the Cabernet butter. It was a big steak (no weights given on the menu) and I remember he couldn’t finish it all. I ended up having the kale from his plate, since he’s not a fan of the green veg!

Desserts…

Me: Maple Crème Brûlée – Description ($9)

Him: Chocolate Whisky Trifle – Malted Milk Panna Cotta, Caramel Popcorn, Whisky Caramel Sauce, Buttered Popcorn Gelato ($11)

The Boy: Nanaimo Pie – Chocolate Hazelnut Crust, Coconut Custard, Crème Anglaise ($11)

All of the desserts tasted very good, and a thumbs up all around from us. On the whole, we really enjoyed Le Cellier, and would choose to dine there again. I know it gets mixed reactions from diners, saying it’s not worth 2 points on the dining plan, and that it’s not as good as it used to be, but for us, we couldn’t find any fault with it at all.

Every time I read your reports on the de luxe plan I am extremely tempted to do it as I particularly like the signature dining. It's just too much food for me though as I don't have a huge appetite. Having just said that I can see us upgrading one year if I keep reading your trippies. I will blame you
Keep up the good work I am proud of your dedication lol

Whispering Canyon Cafe

Whispering Canyon Cafe

Following our Disney Vacation Club Open House Tour, which took up pretty much all morning, and into the afternoon, we were driven back to Wilderness Lodge, where we were staying. We decided to go into Whispering Canyon Cafe for lunch.

Whispering Canyon Cafe is a themed restaurant – the setting is the old west, and the servers are slapdash, throwing napkins and straws on the tables, but this is intentional. As is the, I don’t want to say rudeness, maybe abruptness is a better word – they ain’t got time for yo nonsense! They are there to pull as many of your legs as possible! You can opt out of this by flipping the coaster to red – then you get service as normal, without all the themed elements, but you can watch from the sidelines. We’ve been before, so know what to expect, but if you don’t know this, it can come as a bit of a shock!

The restaurant was pretty empty, so we didn’t need an ADR (good thing, as we didn’t have one!) and were shown to a table straight away. Even though we were one of only a few tables in there, our server still hammed up the service, and she was really amusing.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one appetizer, one entrée, one dessert and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

The menu at lunchtime is a little different to that at dinnertime, so that meant we could have something a bit different from when we went for dinner a few nights before. We ordered appetizers that we could share – ordering the chips, and the tortilla soup again which were all enjoyed during our last visit.

The soup was really tasty, and full of flavour. We shared the chips between the three of us – the portion is huge and seemed never ending! Steve really like the chili, I wasn’t a fan, but the salsa was delicious. The spring rolls were yummy – pulled pork anything is good!

Appetizers…

Me: Slow-Smoked Pulled Pork Spring Rolls – with Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce ($12.49)

Him: Gold Rush Western Chips – with Chili, Queso Dip, and fresh Salsa (serves 2) ($11.99)

The Boy: Ranger John’s Chicken Tortilla Soup ($8.49)

I decided to have a light dish for my main course, choosing a salad, which I had with grilled shrimp – you could also have it with chicken. I made sure in advance to check that there was no blue cheese or celery involved – two foods I really can’t stand! Bit skimpy on the shrimp I think – just 5 of them on a skewer, and I was left wanting more shrimp! Steve enjoyed the quesadillas which were packed with ingredients, and Liam is a Disney burger connoisseur, and yummed it up as per usual.

Entrées…

Me: Mountain Mama’s Western Salad – with Creamy Chipotle Dressing and Grilled Marinated Shrimp ($19.49) with Chicken ($17.49)

Him: Hickory’s Smoked Chicken Quesadilla – Roasted Vegetables, Smoky Jack Cheese, Arugula, Moonshine Dressing, Fresh Salsa, and Cilantro-Sour Cream ($17.99)

The Boy: Bacon Cheese Angus Burger – Hickory-Smoked Bacon, Sharp White Cheddar, and House Ketchup ($16.99)

To wash everything down, Steve and I had (refillable) milkshakes – they are the best milkshakes! Liam had asked for a large coke – this is what he got…

…an ice bucket full of the stuff! One of the antics that can be played by the servers. No need for refills on this one, which got shared out between us!

Desserts…

Me: Wagon Wheel Chocolate S’mores – with Warm Dark Chocolate Sauce, and Marshmallow Gelato ($8.49)

Him: Apple-Caramel Pie – fresh Granny Smith Apples, Sugar Cookie Crust, Streusel Topping, and Caramel Drizzle ($7.99)

The Boy: Whispering Canyon Campfire-style Chocolate Gooey Cake ($7.99)

No photo of Liam’s dessert, as we actually took that to go. He ran out of favour for desserts on this trip, and many ended up in the fridge on this holiday, to be eaten as a snack at a later time. The apple pie was good, but can we just talk about the s’mores dessert I had? Wow, that’s a piece of dessert heaven on a plate! I didn’t want that dessert to end, it was so delicious!

Cape May Cafe

Cape May Cafe

After an afternoon of chilling at our resort, we drove over to Disney’s Beach Club Resort for dinner at Cape May Cafe. I’m going to say right off the bat, that we didn’t enjoy it much here at all. We had quite a late booking, so the buffet was looking past its best, and it felt like they just wanted to kick every one out. Of all of our dining experiences over the years at Walt Disney World this is #2 on the worst list – not for the food, because that wasn’t bad, but just the general feeling of the place. (Number one is held by Hollywood & Vine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2011 – bleh)

As it happens, we were looking forward to this buffet, as had read several times that it was really good. Sadly, that wasn’t our experience at all. So I’m pretty much going to just show you photos that I too of the food, and how much everything cost.

There was a seasonal drinks menu, but the Harpoon Pumpkin Cider that Steve had fancied had run out, so we all just had fountain drinks, which are included with the Disney Dining Plan.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan at a buffet restaurant you are entitled to one full buffet and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

Cape May Cafe is a New England style eatery, with a “Seafood & More” buffet. The buffet area is in the centre of the restaurant, set out in a square. You can walk all around, and help yourself to whatever you like. The selection of dishes can changes on different days of the week. Here is the latest offerings as told by the Disney website.

Soups & Cold Offerings:

Soup of the Day, and Cape May Seafood Chowder, Fresh Fruit Salad, Four Bean Salad, Pickled Red Beets, Cape May House Salad, Caesar Salad, Cape May Potato Salad, Marinated Seafood Salad, Chilled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp, Quinoa Salad with Hearts of Palm, Marinated Olives, Jicama Slaw.

It looks like at least one of us had the soup, sprinkled with oyster crackers. I know we all enjoyed the peel-and-eat shrimp, and I am always a fan of Caesar salad at Disney.

Carvery & Hot Offerings:

Hand-carved Strip Loin with Horseradish Cream, Chicken, Pasta of the Day, Mashed Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, Steamed Red Potatoes, Steamed Corn on the Cob.

Kid’s Buffet:

Macaroni & Cheese, Chicken Drumsticks, Fried Cod Nuggets, Cheese Pizza.

I remember not fancying any of the seafood, which for me, is rather strange, as I love seafood. Instead, I had a roast beef dinner, with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn on the cob, and a bread roll. What Steve and Liam had, I do not remember now, as I don’t have any photos of their plates. Knowing the pair of them at a buffet, they would have had a bit of this and that.

Seafood Selections:

Crab Legs, Steamed Mussels with a side of Tomato Sambuca Broth, Paella, Steamed Clams, Herb-marinated Salmon, Batter-fried Shrimp (offered Sunday & Wednesday), Fried Clam Strips (offered Monday, Thursday, and Saturday), Batter-fried Calamari (offered Tuesday & Friday)

Desserts:

Assorted Pastry Desserts from our Yacht & Beach Bakery, Cookies, Cupcakes, and Brownies.

Some of the desserts were placed out on the main buffet area, and some were on a separate station. Since many of the desserts were almost bitesize, we got a selection and shared them between us.

We paid the bill, and on the drive back to Wilderness Lodge, we could see the fireworks bursting high in the sky above Magic Kingdom, which was very cool – Steve managed to get a couple of shots as we drove through the toll booth area. We could just see the fireworks from the front of the Lodge too.

Kona Cafe

Kona Cafe

My notes from this breakfast was that the service was very slow, and slack, but that the food was delicious. I remember feeling like our server just couldn’t be bothered, and it really marred what could have been a nice experience. I know that Tonga Toast is one of the best breakfasts at Walt Disney World, and it was delish, but the service that went alongside it, wasn’t so great.

When it comes to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan for breakfast at a table service restaurant you are entitled to one entrée, and one non-alcoholic beverage per person (usually refillable) for one credit per person.

Entrées…

Me: Tonga Toast – Banana-Stuffed Sourdough French Toast rolled in Cinnamon Sugar and served with a Strawberry Compote and your choice of Ham, Bacon, or Sausage ($12.99)

Him: Pumpkin Pancakes (seasonal special) – with Maple Pecan Butter and your choice of Bacon, Ham or sausage ($9.99)

The Boy: Big Kahuna – French Toast, Pancakes topped with Pineapple Sauce and Macadamia Nut Butter, Eggs, Home-fried Potatoes, Ham, Bacon and Sausage ($11.99)

For drinks it looks like Liam had a coke, I had a pineapple juice, and Steve had a pot of coffee. As far as the dining plan is concerned, you get least value from it at a table service breakfast.

We were given condiments to share – whipped butter, ketchup, syrup and strawberry compote, which were placed on the table before we received our breakfast plates. I can see why Tonga Toast is popular – it was lush! But so much food! You could share a portion of this. Similarly Liam’s Big Kahuna breakfast is called that for a reason – he couldn’t finish it off, so Steve and I shared what he didn’t have (specifically the eggs, as he doesn’t like those). Steve’s pancakes were good – not so much pumpkin flavour, but more the spices that go with, which is the usual case with pumpkin flavoured things.

We were not given the option to put the tip on our Magic Bands as we usually did, so just left $10 on the table for our server, as it was the smallest amount of cash we had on us. The service wasn’t worth a tip, in our personal opinion, but it is what it is. It wouldn’t put us off going back though, and it’s likely Steve and I will have breakfast here at least once when we go on holiday to Walt Disney World in September for my birthday.
