WDW-40: 2016 - A Month of Food!

WDW-40: 2016 - A Month of Food!

I know that Dibbers love checking out the different food, snacks, and restaurants at Disney, and around Orlando, so I thought I'd start writing up my 3rd food only report! (Links to all my other trippies in sig!)

In my previous two reports, we were on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan - this time it's all out of pocket as we are now Disney Vacation Club Members! We looked into buying the plan, but it's just not value for money if part of it isn't "free" with a resort booking

We did however buy a Tables in Wonderland Card (TiW). This is a discount card for Florida residents ($175), Annual Passholders, and DVC Members. For APs and DVCMs the cost is $150.

This gives you a 20% discount on food and beverages (including alcohol) at over 100 participating restaurants at Walt Disney World Resort. 18% tip/gratuity is added automatically – no matter how big the size of the party. It is valid for up to 10 people on one check, and you also receive free Resort Valet or Theme Park parking for dining purposes.

Preamble

The name of this trip is WDW-40, because we were out there celebrating my 40th birthday in September 2016! It was a couples holiday this time around, with just my husband (Steve) and me (Michelle) (my teen stayed home with his dad) My brother (Chris) and his fiancee (Meg) joined us for a couple of weeks too. All my photographs from my trip will be in my Florida 2016 Collection on Flickr.

Me with Steve, Chris & Meg

We went for a day shy of a month, the longest we've ever been! It was first DVC trip, and with our points doubled on purchase, we decided to splurge them!

We did a multi-split stay -
  • Vero Beach for 5 days
  • Polynesian for 2 weeks
  • Animal Kingdom Villas for 1 week
  • SSR for 1 night

I'll be including both Disney Dining, Epcot Food & Wine Festival food, other theme park dining, and offsite dining in this report.

As always any questions - just ask! I'm always happy to help!

Here is where we dined on our 2016 trip:
I will update this to the links as I write them!

Thyme British Bar & Grill

Thyme British Bar & Grill » Premier Inn, Gatwick North

We stayed at the Premier Inn, Gatwick North, the night before our flight to Orlando. As part of the price we paid for our room, we could have a 2-course dinner – either a starter and main course, or main course and dessert. You can bump this up to a three course for a few extra pounds if you wish to do so. A drink is also included – either a pint of beer, glass of wine, or a soft drink.

I decided to start with a classic prawn cocktail, and had a chicken and bacon salad for my main course. Steve had chicken wings for his starter, and a mixed grill for his mains. The food was delicious.

I really enjoyed my prawn cocktail – they were nice big prawns, and not those wishy-washy tiny prawns you sometimes get in them. Steve really enjoyed his mixed grill, but said he wished it had come on a round plate instead of the rectangular one.

Starters...

Me: Classic Prawn Cocktail – with mixed salad and a baked dough stick (£5.49)

Him: Chicken Wings – 5 wings with a blue cheese or sour cream and chives dip (£5.49)

Main Course...

Me: Chicken & Bacon BBQ Salad – chicken breast, streaky bacon, mixed leaves, red onion, cucumber, mixed peppers and BBQ sauce (£10.99)

Him: The Thyme Mixed Grill – 40z flat iron steak, chicken breast, half a gammon steak, sausage, and a fried egg (£16.99)

***********************************************

The Thyme British Bar & Grill

Bill: Included in our room rate of £145.98

***********************************************

We decided to forgo a dessert, and later returned to the Costa Coffee next to the The Thyme to grab an iced coffee and some cakes. We paid around £13 in total for the drinks and dessert we bought, and took them back up to our room as the seating area was really busy.

Thyme British Bar & Grill

Thyme British Bar & Grill » Premier Inn, Gatwick North

We woke up pretty early – but the nerves were already kicking in for me. I’m not scared of flying, but as I’ve got older I get quite a sick feeling on flight day. We’ve flown so much over the past few years, so it’s weird I still feel this way. I generally spray some Bach’s Rescue Remedy to alleviate the nerves. To that end, I was in no mood for breakfast, but Steve went down to get some for himself. He ended bringing back some breakfast for me – just in case I changed my mind – bless his thoughtfulness!

Breakfast at the Premier Inn is served buffet style, and you can help yourself to as much as you like. It is standard hotel fare, with items for a cooked English breakfast, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, and baked goods.

Price was included in our room rate.

Onboard Lunch, British Airways

Onboard Lunch » British Airways

We had our first round of drinks at the beginning of the flight – but no little bag of pretzels! Cost cutting measure there I think.

Lunch was served with a few more cost cutting measures compared to previous flights – in the past we’ve had a small bottle of water, but this was a tiny plastic cup of the wet stuff. Cheese and crackers were also notably missing! Not too much of a big deal about that, but we definitely missed having the bottle of water – it was handy for taking a sip, and then putting in the pocket in front of you for later in the flight.

I remember aeroplane food being awful when I was a kid, but it seems to have improved a lot over the years. The starter was a lemon and mint couscous salad. For main course, I had a mushroom lasagne, and Steve had sausage and mash. We also had a herb bread roll and butter on the side, and for dessert it was an apple and blackcurrant cheesecake. Everything tasted fine.

In-Room Dining, Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport

In-Room Dining » Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport

Thanks to a flight delay, it was nearly 10pm by the time we got into our room, and we were both hungry, so ordered room service. We were too shattered to bother venturing out into the airport for food – although too late for pretty much all of the eateries too. We had to wait about half an hour for our dinner, which was enough time for us to sort ourselves out and unpack the few things we’d need for the next day.

Our food was rolled in on a cart, which to Steve’s amazement folded out into a little dining table! I had seen this type of service before when I stayed at the Omni Hotel in Houston, Texas back in 1994, when I went with my dad on a business trip. It was nice to have that memory come back to me! Here in the UK we only ever seem to get room service on a tray. I’m a sucker for things that are cute, and the mini bottles of condiments were exactly that! I swiped the ones we didn’t use to use during our holiday.

All the food was hot, and tasted good, and the price wasn’t that bad for room service.

Starters...

Chicken Quesadilla – Flour tortilla, pulled chicken, pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream ($9.95)

Main Course...

Me: Cuban Sandwich – Authentic style, turkey, ham, pork, pepper jack cheese, mojo and plantain chips ($11.75)

Him: Strauss Grass-Fed Burger – 60z. grilled Strauss grass-fed burger, crisp lettuce, brioche bun, sliced tomato, white cheddar, red onion jam, horseradish sauce and French fries ($12.50)

***********************************************

Hyatt Regency – In Room Dining

Bill: $57.12 - including $3 delivery charge, and 24% service charge including gratuity

***********************************************
