This is my island in the sun - Day Three - Part two

Day Three - PART TWO - "That's not me!" OR "Two soups!"

I chill on the day bed on our veranda which my legs up on the table with two cushions underneath them.

Down on the beach a guy is playing a saxophone and it is actually quite pleasant.

Darrin decides to go to the Seaside Pool and bar where he has a swim and a drink. I’m on a mug of Earl Grey tea! We have a couple of hours before we need to get ready for dinner.

Tonight it’s back to the Champagne bar where they are dishing out a Californian sparkling wine (Method Champagnoise). This was taken ear;lier in teh day before it opened.

We sit and chat with fellow guests for an hour or so. Tonight we are at the twee named “The Trysting Place”.

OK, its has won awards. I’ll grant you that. It is here that we shall encounter a Julie Walters “Two soups” character. The lady in question has been there donkeys years apparently and she wears white cotton gloves whilst serving you. The fact that Barry had implanted this image in my head – (he had encountered her on several previous visits) means I am struggling not to giggle.

When we enter the restaurant the Maitre D’ greets us with a “Bonjou” – the Patois version of Bonjour. I respond: Bonsoir, et comment va tu? He looks surprised and says: Oh! You speak French - to which I respond: Yes, but I don’t speak Patois. This causes him to laugh.
We are shown to a table and handed menus whilst napkins are spread on our laps.

It’s then that “Julie Walters” makes her way to our table complete with white gloves. She has that strange gait that Walters perfected for the “Two soups” sketch. I dare not look at Darrin or I will explode with laughter:

She is the St. Lucian version of this character. Barry did not exaggerate. Don’t get me wrong, she does her job perfectly but it’s the walk and the fuss she makes over where things are on the table. She moves the condiments and straightens my knife. I am having to hold my breath.

“Ready to order, Sir?” It’s the exact line Walters uses in the sketch. She is poised with pen and notepad. I cannot look at her directly as I struggle to give my order. She then turns to Darrin and takes his requirements. She holds the pad at arm’s length and writes everything down with a flourish filling the entire sheet. She could be signing a death warrant!

I have to go to the restrooms or I will surely die of laughter. Whilst I’m gone Darrin orders wine.

The Sommelier certainly knows what he is doing as he decants the Californian Merlot, checking against the candle that no sediment escapes the bottle.

Starters arrive and as “Julie” places mine down. She moves my wine glass exactly one centimetre away from my eating area. I quickly glance at Darrin.

As to the food:

I start with Jambon Cru (like Parma Ham)and melon:

Darrin – a salmon timbale with a passion fruit sauce:

These are followed by a sorbet of passion fruit which was quite tart in flavour. It certainly cleared the palate.

We both have steak with peppercorn sauce, fries and salad.

We had ordered it medium but it was over that. We couldn’t be bothered to send them back as we might have to face the wrath of “Julie”.

For dessert I have Lime Pie – very like Key Lime pie:

Darrin – Kahlua and coffee ice cream on a peanut brownie with panna cotta:

We are full to bursting. “Julie” comes to check all is OK. We thank her for her service and leave for our room. We are still chortling about her when we climb into bed. Goodnight one and all!

I've struggled to keep a straight face just reading about 'Julie' - I think you did extremely well to hold it together when seeing her in the flesh.

Geoff. A lovely meal and a great end to a great day after the trip. I did chuckle about your server. Just as well my Wife wasn't there as she is a giggler and would have carried on for hours!

Have to say that whilst we have had a joke at the poor lady's expense the service at the resort is impeccable. They hold regular training courses - even one about English and American culture, so they know what they might expect. Last night was the Manager's cocktail party and we learned quite a bit about the resort and its aims to provide the very best. It's not a cheap place (of course we aren't paying) but you really do get 5 star service and facilities all round. The couple who moved into next door to us had been in a ground floor room. The air conditioning stopped working. The management immediately sent staff to move all their cases etc to the new room and then a complimentary bottle of champagne arrived. That IS first class customer service. Some of you may recall the dusty mirror incident on one of our previous trips and the response I got when I mentioned it. We will be back here but probably in a January of a future year. At that time of year there are less mosquitoes.

That saxophone player on the beach below your veranda... heaven on a stick.

I wouldn't have been able to hold in the mirth.
