New England Sep 17! Day 7 - Exploring Acadia National Park Day 2
Index
Previous Day Thursday 7th September 2017 It was forecast to rain all day today but we were lucky. We had a misty morning followed by a sunny afternoon. The breakfast in the hotel yesterday had been nice enough, so we went with this again this morning. We had a selection of waffles, bagels and muffins with coffee. Around 09:00 we drove into the National Park, along Park Loop Road and parked at Sand Beach. We headed down to the beach but there wasn’t too much to see at this time as it was so misty. We walked along the beach to the granite stairway, which marks the start of the Great Head Trail. There's an option to do a shorter route but we went for the full loop, which is just under 2 miles. The trail is quite rocky in places and the initial part involves a bit of a climb but we didn't find it too difficult. Once you make it to the top the views of the coastline and Beehive are supposed to be amazing but unfortunately the mist hadn't cleared yet. The last part of the trail takes you through the forest and ends on a path that leads back to Sand Beach. It took us around an hour to do the full loop. From here we headed across the road to complete the Beehive trail. I was really looking forward to this one, after reading about it online. I'd read that it could get very busy, but as it was still fairly early and foggy, we only saw 2 other people. The trail heads up a steep face of the cliff and involves climbing iron rungs to get yourself up and has many exposed areas. I didn't take too many photos, as I was busy concentrating It took us around 30 mins to get to the summit. Once again the views were still spoilt somewhat by the mist. I was really glad we done this trail though, it was different to anything we'd done before. We headed back down, via The Bowl Trail, which leads to the pond behind Beehive. Eventually we reached the intersection to join the Gorham Mountain Trail. This was the longest trail that we done, at around 3 miles. It’s one of the most popular too I believe, we saw plenty of people along here and lots of dogs. There’s a mixture of rock climbing and paths along this route, nothing too difficult. There are plenty of blue markers to follow as well, to keep you on track. As it was later in the day, the mist had finally cleared and we got some lovely views once we’d reached the summit. We could see over to the Beehive and could just about see people making their way up. I wished we’d done Beehive later in the day to get the better views but never mind. You also get views of Sand Beach and Great Head from here. We had a break at the top with a drink and some snacks before making our way down. We continued along the trail, making our way past all the blueberry bushes before ending at the parking lot for Gorham Mountain. This part of the trail, from Beehive, took us just under 2 hours to complete. From here we made our way along the Ocean Path, back to Sand Beach, stopping at Thunder Hole. There is a small cave here in the rocks, which the waves crash in to forcing air and water out. This makes a sound just like thunder and forces the water into the air. It was quite busy in the area but we spent around 15 minutes watching and listening. We quite enjoyed it. We continued along the Ocean Path, back to our car at Sand Beach. We drove from here back to Jordan Pond House, just to pick up some Popover mix from the gift shop, as we enjoyed them so much yesterday. We haven’t made them yet, but I’m hoping they turn out just as good. Our next stop was Cadillac Mountain, to end the day. I believe this is the highest point along the North Atlantic and the first place to view the sunrise in the US. The drive to the summit is scenic and took us around 20 mins. There’s plenty of parking at the top of the mountain and a gift shop. The views from the summit are great, you can see so much from here but it was cold and very windy. We should have stayed and waited for the sunset but by this point we were pretty tired and hungry. With this in mind, we headed back into Bar Harbor and back to Rosalie’s Pizza for dinner. We just went for another pizza with garlic bread and ate this back at the room. We also spent some time packing up, ready to leave in the morning. Next: Day 8 - Schoodic Peninsula & Heading to The White Mountains

They really are! I think they basically are Yorkshire puddings but maybe cooked slightly different.
We do like to pack the hiking in. We always go with the mind-set that we may never be back, so always does as much as we can. Most mornings were slightly 'ruined' by the mist but we got used to it It certainly was, Acadia was beautiful
