New England Sep 17! Day 15 - Provincetown & National Seashore Beaches
Index
Previous Day Friday 15th September 2017 Today was one of my favourite days We left the hotel at 08:00 and drove to Dunkin’ Donuts for breakfast. There was one very close to our hotel, which was handy. Mark had a sausage and egg croissant with a vanilla latte and I had a blueberry muffin with a maple pecan iced coffee. Total cost was $12.00. We then began the drive to Provincetown, which took just under an hour, arriving at 09:15. We parked in the Macmillan Pier parking lot, which like most places in Provincetown, there was a charge but it’s in a good location. From here we headed over to Art’s Dune Tours, ready for our 10am tour of the Cape Cod National Seashore sand dunes. We were a little early, so after checking-in we waited outside on the benches. There were a few other tour groups, which left before our driver Dave arrived. We were with two other American couples on the tour, who were friends. Mark had to sit in the front of the car with Dave and I sat just behind him. We left right on time and drove along the main road before reaching the small entrance to the Province Lands dunes. I believe anybody is able to walk through the dunes but Art’s Dune Tours and those staying in a dune shack are the only ones with car access. We spent the next hour driving through the dunes, which was such a great experience. We learnt a lot from Dave about animals and vegetation in the area. Halfway through the tour, we stopped and were able to get out and take photos. We also saw a couple of the dune shacks, which have housed many artists and writers over the years. The majority are owned by the national service and individuals can enter a lottery for a chance to stay in one of the shacks. None of them have electricity, plumbing or running water. Soon enough we were heading back to the Art’s Dune Tour base. We both really enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend it. We’ve never done anything like this before and we learnt a lot. If only the tour was a bit longer than 1 hour. After this we spent some time along Commercial St, having a look in some of the shops. I got a Cape Cod t-shirt for $10.00 from a souvenir shop. We also picked up a couple of boxes of saltwater taffy from Cabot’s Candy, as gifts for family and a small bag for ourselves. I’m not a huge fan of sweets but these were actually quite nice, they do so many different flavours. We also spotted the Pilgrim Monument and the Public Library. After some time exploring the area, we decided to grab some lunch. A place called John’s Foot Long had been recommended to us by Dave, so we headed here. We both got a foot-long hot dog with a large fries and drink to share. Total cost was $15.00. There was a small seating area upstairs from where you order so we sat here to eat our food. The hot dogs are on a grilled bun, which was super tasty. What a great recommendation. We headed back towards the car and took a walk along Macmillan Pier before heading over to the big blue chair on the beach for some photos. From here we went back to the car and paid $14.00 for parking on our way out. We then spent the rest of the afternoon visiting the National Seashore beaches. There are so many recommended beaches to see we decided to do a short tour of a few of them, rather than spending longer at just one. I’d expected to pay $20.00 for a parking pass for the beaches but as it was after Labor Day the charge doesn’t apply anymore, which was good. First stop was Herring Cove beach, which is in Provincetown. This was probably my favourite, it was beautiful but also very quiet. We spotted a coyote on the beach and lots of little washed up fish. Next up was Race Point Beach, which is just a few mins away. This one is probably nicer than the last, as the water is much more blue and the sand softer but it was a lot busier and warmer here. After this, we started headed back towards Chatham to get to the next beach. It took us around 30 mins to reach Marconi Beach, in Wellfleet. The sand isn’t quite as soft here but the breeze was lovely, as it had gotten pretty warm by this point. There’s also a large sand dune lining the beach. The final stop on our beach tour was Nauset Light. Again, this beach was quite busy and the sand was rockier but we particularly enjoyed watching the waves here and seeing the lighthouse. There are so many beautiful beaches in the area, it’s definitely worth seeing a few of them. We then headed back to the hotel, to shower and change before going out for dinner. We drove to The Talkative Pig, which was very busy but luckily, we got a table. We got 2 small pizzas share; 1 pulled pork and 1 BLT but we probably could have just had 1 between us. They were really nice though, the BLT especially. Service was a little slow but they were very busy. Total cost was $41.20 plus tip. After this it was back to the hotel for the evening! Next: Day 16 - Cycling the Cape Cod Rail Trail & Chatham

The dune tour looks like a lot of fun!
I love all the beaches - you can't beat the sound of crashing waves!

Those beaches look beautiful , how fab that there are so many to see.
The dune tour sounds different - not sure about staying in those shacks though with no electricity ! Lovely food too. Love the name the Talkative Pig !

It was quite an experience.
Beaches were beautiful, you can see why so many Americans holiday here! I don't think I could stay in a shack either, but it must be nice to get away from everything. Haha, quite an unusual name
