New England Sep 17! Day 16 - Cycling the Cape Cod Rail Trail & Chatham

Index

Previous Day

Saturday 16th September 2017

Today was our last full day

We left the room around 08:30 and drove over to South Dennis, which took 20 mins. We stopped at the Dunkin’ Donuts on the way, in West Dennis and both had the same breakfast as yesterday. From here, we continued to Barb’s Bike Shop to rent a bike each.

The plan this morning was to cycle part of the Cape Cod Rail Trail to Nickerson State Park. South Dennis is a good starting point, as the trail doesn’t go much further west, although they are currently extending it. We therefore began our ride going east.

We decided not to stop for any photos on the way there and just enjoy the ride. The views aren’t always amazing but there are a few pretty lakes along the way. If you particularly enjoy cycling, I think this is a great way to spend part of your day and there’s a few different routes you can do. The cycle path is well maintained but we didn’t see any restrooms till we got to Nickerson State Park, which was a bit annoying. It was very quiet on the way there too, we only saw a couple of people.

After a leisurely cycle, we arrived at the state park, 1hr 15mins later.

We stayed here for a while having a drink and a little look around the park before heading back to South Dennis. On the way back, we stopped at a couple of the lakes and took some more photos along the way.

The ride back took us 1hr 20mins and the round trip was 22 miles. After taking our bikes back to the shop and paying up, we headed over to the nearby Burger King for lunch. I think we earned it

From here, we made our way back to the hotel to shower and change before heading back out. We drove over to Chatham Lighthouse, where there is parking nearby but it was very busy and you only get 30 mins. The walk from the main part of town wouldn’t be too far but luckily, we were able to get a space. We spent 20 mins or so here, viewing the lighthouse and looking over scenic lighthouse beach.

We continued further along the elbow of the cape to Monomoy Wildlife Refuge. There’s a small trail to reach the beach, which offers some beautiful views of the water and boats. The trail does extend further, making its way across the beach but we didn’t have time to go any further today.

Next, we drove over to Oyster Pond, which is a lovely little area with a small beach. We spent some time here, which would be the last time we’d see such beautiful scenery.

Finally, we headed back to Main St, parking up and making our way to Chatham Candy Manor. We picked up a few bags of chocolates from here for family back home.

We then made our way back to the hotel, to start packing and getting organised for the journey home tomorrow

I’d planned to go to Mom & Pop’s burgers for lunch one day but as we never made it, we decided to go here for dinner tonight instead. The reviews had been so good, we didn't want to miss out. Mark had a double cheeseburger with mom & pop’s fries, which are fries covered in cheese sauce and onions. I had a mission dog, also with mom & pop’s fries. This was one of my favourite meals of the holiday! It’s kind of like Shake Shack/Five Guys but even better. Highly recommend here if you’re in the area. Total cost was $32.53 plus tip.

It was then back to the hotel for the evening, to finish packing!

Next: Day 17 - Wrentham Village Outlet & Going Home

22miles is a fair trek! Your legs must have been tired!

Again - spectacular scenery! So very picturesque!

Dinner looks lovely- and such good value!

Lovely last day, brings back memories of our 2010 trip but your sky at Chatham lighthouse was a lot nicer than when we visited on a wet and windy day

Gorgeous part of America, Cape Cod

I didn't realise it was 22 miles until we looked it up after we'd finished. We done pretty well

Dinner was amazing - if only there was one here

They were so good. I'm tempted to try and make them at home but I know they won't be the same.

It was a lovely way to end the holiday

I can imagine it's just as beautiful in bad weather. It was actually forecast to rain while we were in Cape Cod but thankfully it never did
