Touring Tennessee Day 22: Cowboy Church & Downtown Nashville
Breakfast was busy this morning - Nashville is clearly a very popular destination for visitors. We had a good breakfast and then got ready to go out.
We wanted to go to Church and when we found out there was a Cowboy Church in Nashville, we had to visit. It is held in the Texas Troubadour Theatre which is near the Opry, so we drove the short distance there. Cowboy Church is a really simple service - lots of country gospel music and a very short sermon. The pastors at this church are Dr Harry Yates and his wife, Joanne Cash Yates who is Johnny Cash's little sister. There were a couple of guests who sang with the house band and then Joanne sang, followed by a short sermon from the Pastor. They take the collection in a cowboy hat and the whole experience was really warm and friendly. We left feeling really uplifted and glad that we had decided to go. We hadn't managed to co-ordinate a cowboy church visit before but we would definitely go again. After this, we decided to call to the souvenir store at the Willie Nelson Museum - the largest gift shop in Nashville according to the publicity. It was indeed a very large gift shop and we came away with a selection of t-hirts, mugs and fridge magnets. Evan was very tempted with a t-shirt that said "Vote Willie - the Party Party" but alas they didn't have it in his size. Paul had been pondering a leather jacket he had seen at Opry Mills and finally decided to get it, so we stopped off there. It is a really nice jacket and looks great on him, and it was quite bargainous. We also had a cheeky Dairy Queen as it would be our last chance. Why don't we have Dairy Queen in England, why? Then it was back to the hotel, via Publix to pick up some beers for later and some sweets for the kids to take back. We saw a pizza place in the same strip mall called Hi Pies pizza shop and paused to admire the name. Back at the hotel, we did a bit of packing as it was our last full day, before calling an Uber and heading back downtown. We had enjoyed Robert's Western World so much last time that we thought we would come back without the car so Paul and I could have a couple of beers. The band this time was Rachel Hester and the Tennessee Walkers. Again they were superb musicians and the music was great. Members of the band also play with other Nashville musicians, such Alan Jackson and Marty Stuart, so you really do get quality musicians here. We had a few beers and all really enjoyed the music, which was toe tapping honky tonk again. As we left, we stopped to talk to Chris Scruggs, who is the guitarist on the left hand side of the picture. We had seen him play with Marty Stuart's band, the Fabulous Superlatives (what a name!) as Professor Scruggs when they were at the Country 2 Country Festival in London in March. He was very friendly and told us that he would be touring with Marty in the UK in the autumn, which pleased us greatly as we had tickets for the Birmingham gig. As an aside, if you ever get the chance to see Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives play, make sure you go. They are one of the best live bands I have seen and the show is amazing. We were slightly sad to leave but as we were getting hungry, it was time to go. We paused for a picture outside, really pleased that we had been given the recommendation, as we would never have gone there otherwise. We had picked Acme Feed and Seed as somewhere to eat so started walking down Broadway, which was again full of people. As we walked along, someone threw a bottle from one of the rooftop bars and it smashed on the pavement - luckily it didn't hit anyone. But that kind of behaviour pretty much summed up Broadway for us and we didn't linger. Acme Feed and Seed was pretty busy but not as lairy as outside. There was a band but they weren't country which seemed a strange choice for this part of town. However, we found a seat and ordered some food. It all arrived quite quickly and was okay, but nothing to write home about and we didn't hang around. As it was all so busy outside, we didn't want to wait on the street for a taxi, so headed to the Country Music Hall of Fame and ordered our Uber from there. Our driver was very friendly, telling us that people were moving to Nashville every day and that it was a really popular place for people to live and growing by the day. Back at the hotel, we finished up packing, before settling down to drink beer, eat snacks and watch the finale of Game of Thrones and to do lots of this

The church visit sounds like it was a really positive experience!
I agree that DQ should be over here - can't beat a blizzard Broadway doesn't seem to be the easiest place to wander around! Scary with a smashed bottle! Thanks for the report - it has been most enjoyable and interesting

A nice day - we didn't get to church in the end as we switched our plans around but we drove past that one , it was right by our hotel - shame , it sounded fun !
I hope all the last day purchases made it into the cases ok ! Sounds like a nice evening at Roberts but a bit meh on Broadway - we really didn't like it there at all , we felt it was grimy and just not our scene - so much so that we didn't venture into any of the bars at all, bit feeble really. Sad face, its coming to an end and its been such a fab adventure ...
