The breakfast bun looks tasty and I've seen other people rave about it, I'll have to add it on to the list of potentials for next time.

We've also had our little spats too. I find there's nothing quite like being in one room together for 2 weeks combined with the heat and lack of sleep that all combines to make for the perfect storm and then something really ridiculous like someone forgetting their magic band in the room and we miss the bus to the park results in the worst row in the world! Ahh, I can't wait to get back to my happy place now I've remembered what there is to look forward to!
The ‘Family Style’ meals definitely trump the buffets, much calmer. Your trip will be here before you know it. I booked the last of my ADRs today, can hardly believe there’s only six months left to go.

Sorry that some of the food wasn't as good as others but hopefully the good outweighed the bad! We're eating at some of the same restaurants so it's interesting to see what we have in store.
Thank you for reading! The good definitely outweighed the bad, I never let myself get down about enjoying meals, I’m just excited to try places out. Which restaurants are your most looking forward to trying?

You’ll love it! There was a lovely atmosphere in the viewing area too, so hoping we can book again for this year.

DAY 8
Thursday 28th September 2017

CAFE RIX

As Coronado Springs is a convention resort it has a wider variety of dining venues than you usually find at moderate resorts. There is the Pepper Market, which is the main food court, two table service restaurants in Maya Grill and Las Ventanas and, lastly, Café Rix, which is a grab and go. We were having a slower start to today after our late night, so whilst Nik was having a lie in, I headed to do some laundry and sit by the pool.

‘Grab and Go’ means the store sells things like cakes and pastries, plus pre-packaged sandwiches, salads and other snacks.

I grabbed a Cheese Danish to keep me going until lunch, we LOVE these, I never thought I’d like a cheesey pastry haha.

WHISPERING CANYON CAFE

Lunch was at one of our favourite restaurants, at what I *think* is my favourite resort, Whispering Canyon Café at Wilderness Lodge. They offer a fantastic lunch menu here, but you can also order the famous skillet if you want to (I have in the past and it's delicious).

We are not up for the hijinks here, I just like to watch, and I was horrified to find that the coasters that are usually on the table to indicate whether or not you want to participate were gone! Thankfully, as with most servers, ours (Bridget), was great at gauging how comfortable we were.

We started with a dish that is a tradition for us, Gold Rush Western Chips - with Chili, Queso Dip, and fresh Salsa. We were gutted to see the queso was no longer mixed in which the chilli as on previous visits. I was pretty certain the chips were different too, but we still loved it, and barely made a dent in it, despite the fact I could eat nachos all day.

Nik had the Tuna Melt on Multigrain Bread - with Vine-ripened Tomatoes, Sharp White Cheddar, Arugula, and Pistou-Herb Oil. This was served open-faced, which Nik doesn't like as he favours a traditional sandwich. Taste wise it was delicious, the bread was crunchy and the arugula added a nice texture.

I had the Chopped Bison Burger - with Sirancha Aoili, White Cheddar Cheese, Double-smoked Thick-cut Bacon, Fried Pickle, and Potato Wedge. Oh my, this is a contender for the best burger in Disney. Out of this world, so juicy. The wedges were a little too thick cut for my liking.

Nik was happy with his Coke refil.

I had wanted to try the apple pie here, but at the last minute I switched to the Whispering Canyon Pioneer Chocolate Cake. This was a mistake, the presentation was cute, but it tasted like a muffin, a dry one at that, and I didn’t like it.

Nik had the Coconut-Rice Pudding, it was like panna cotta, and neither of us liked it. Much runnier than the rice pudding we are used to.

Despite our lack of success with desserts this meal was one my favourites, I never get tired of visiting this resort and there were lots of hijinks taking place at other tables, which was fun to watch. I don’t think the table close to us understood the theming of the restaurant, and the man caught Nik’s eye in horror, when a teenage girl was being teased for playing on her phone. I was careful to keep my notebook with my musings on our meals out of sight!

The meal came to $74.53.

CITRICOS

Citricos was a restaurant that hadn’t ever really been on my radar, but as one of the few Signatures we were yet to visit, I added it to our plans. I am so glad we did as this was a standout meal of the trip, and even knocked Nik’s beloved Narcoossee’s off its pedestal.

We knew we were on to a winner the second we saw the menu, so many of our favourites were calling out to us and we agonised over our choices.

We were seated near the open kitchen, I’d have loved a window table overlooking the Grand Floridian grounds but I don’t like to make a fuss. We had a wonderful server (Darci), she was excellent at her job, efficient, knowledgeable, and attentive without being pushy.

We started out with some Nojitos, a first for us both, these were quite refreshing, but I missed the fizz of soda. Our server allowed us the mocktails as our dining plan drinks and we paid OOP for the soda, we were surprised as we didn’t know you could do this.

Then came an amuse bouche, which was a pleasant surprise. The main component was chorizo, but I stupidly didn’t make a note of the others. It was nice though, if a little spicy for me.

The olive bread was a nice change from all the white bread we had been eating with dinner. Quite dense, with a lovely firm texture.

After much deliberation I went for the AranciniCrispy Risotto, Mascarpone, Zesty Garlic Poma Rosa Sauce. These are a guest favourite and I can see why, they were crunchy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside, with just the right amount of sauce.

Nik had the Pate de CampagneCountry Pate, Watercress, Onion Confit, Cornichons, Mustard Seeds, Focaccia. We love pate, we eat it multiple times a week and it’s always our favourite part of a charcuterie, so I was thrilled to see it listed solo in a full-sized portion. It was fantastic, if there had been a little more focaccia we would have polished it all off.

Scallop Risotto English Peas, Fava Beans, Asparagus, Scallop Jus, isn’t this dish beautiful!? I had only tried scallops at Food and Wine previously so this was maybe a slight gamble for me but they were to die for, slightly smoking from being seared and melt in the mouth in the middle. Nik tried them and thought it very was tender chicken ! I’d have liked the risotto to be a little softer, but that’s personal preference (I overcook my pasta and veg as well). I loved the jus, you can never have too much sauce in my opinion.

Nik played it safe with Oak-grilled Beef FiletPotato Puree, Asparagus, Cipollini Jam, Bordelaise. He says filet was better than Narcoossee’s and the potatoes weren’t 'rustic' (lumpy!)

Dessert was next up!

Nik had Tasting of Gelatofeaturing Italian Vanilla Bean, Mocha Espresso and Double Chocolate. We loved the presentation of this dish, so fun. Nice to see a reasonable portion size too. Nik’s favourite was the vanilla bean.

Tiramisu with Italian Sorella Mascarpone and Chocolate Sauce. Tiramisu is a favourite of mine, I was so tempted by the Key Lime Pie and Crème Brulee, but in the end I couldn’t turn this down. It was perfect, it loved that the coffee was whipped in with the mascarpone instead of just soaked into the sponge. Delicious!

This became our new favourite meal of the trip! It came to $168.23 and was worth every penny, we would happily go back and pay out of pocket.

The service was wonderful, the restaurant had a wonderfully calm atmosphere, and felt more upscale than Narcoossee's. A bit of a hidden gem as far as we are concerned.

You can view the menu here.

TOTAL SPEND SO FAR $1,702.65

Just how efficient are you!
There I was catching up with strops and some lovely food photos from day 7 and you have day 8 to look at too – I need to Dibb more.

Have to admit your photos of the food at Whispering Canyon nearly grabbed me into a visit, your words have made this a want to do, sounds a great place to eat.

Citricos is another you have added to the list- food looks beautiful and to read your description has made it a must do for me. That Gelato dessert is wonderful.

Always love the description of a hidden gem at Disney – they are few and far between- but when you find them you really do know about it.

Thanks John, I knew you'd appreciate the Ariel's visit.

The boys will absolutely love Whispering Canyon Cafe, definitely give it a go. Dinner reservations are harder to come by than lunch, you won't be disappointed with either I'm sure. Citricos made me feel like I was eating in one of the restaurants they feature on Masterchef.

Thank you for reading!

I am absolutley loving Nik's face with that gelato dessert haha. Thanks for the advice on choosing Boma for a breakfast buffet- that will please my plantain-obsessed hubby. Although I won't tell him about the plantains in advance in case they don't have them! He'd never forgive me lol.

Talking of that, the Orange Juice spat you asked for elaboration on is particularly petty and embarrassing but here goes. It was the last night of a self catering holiday in Tenerife and hubby (then just boyfriend) wanted to buy an overpriced 2l bottle of orange juice. I objected on the grounds we were almost out of money, and what was the point in buying 2l of juice when we only had one breakfast to drink it at? He pointed out I'd just spent €20 on a bracelet, and as you can imagine it all went downhill from there! I dramatically declared I would take the bracelet back to the shop right now as I didn't know I wasn't allowed to buy it on account of him needing all our money for orange juice. This all went down in the middle of the grocery store. The shame.

We had an Orlando based one on our honeymoon when he suddenly decided he really wanted to go to the beach for the day, and I said no as we had a full itinerary and no means of transport to get there. Cue a jetlagged spat about me being a itinerary-dictator and him not appreciating all the time and effort I'd spent planning. It's not like we had a cruise to mexico right after with loads if beach time either *eye roll*

We always seem to get over the spats quite quickly thankfully, I'd hate for it to ruin more than a few hours of holiday!

I've never tried a cheese Danish, is it sweet or savoury? Is it like a cheese cake in a Danish pastry or is it more like a cheese pasty? In the photo of you lounging it looks like custard. As you can tell I'm very curious. If it's a sweet pastry then I may have to try it out, but I'm not sure about a savoury cheese pastry.

Citricos looked lovely. How good was your server? What a nice idea about the cocktails as the drink on dining plan. The photo of Nik with his pudding is fab. Your scallops look really tasty too. Another one to add to my list for next year, as you know we have narcoosees booked up for this summer.

Fab report, thank you so much for sharing. 😃
I’m currently trying to decide whether to upgrade from QSDP to DDP next year and seeing all this delicious food makes me think it’s definitely a good idea!
I’m also thinking of trying a dessert party, which one do you think is the best one?
