DW/CMG Lunch - Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous (Islands of Adventure, Seuss Landing) We were intent on grabbing the nearest greasy burger for lunch today/first day at Universal after all the fine dining at Disney and to celebrate our freedom from the dining plan. This saw us end up at the big circus tent with the long name that must be something Dr Seuss. Inside this place is huge with two mirroring ordering areas. This process was slow. OMG it was slow. There were all of 6 people in the queue in front of us for food and literally no-one was server anything in the first ten minutes. Round the front there were lots of people standing around discussing the orders, out back this is the crack team I imagined. Doesn’t help that they had a wide menu of everything from burgers to pizza to spagbol. Anyway DD went for a chicken burger and a milkshake and I had a bacon cheeseburger with a diet coke. Both meals came with fries and I’m fairly sure we were forced to pay for the dessert we didn’t want too because $32. DD ate most of the chicken burger and said it was okay. When I tried it, vile was the word that came to mind it tasted weirdly of gherkin but DD reckons it was just that corner of the burger? Anyway the chips were fine and my burger was also pretty good as your standard theme park burger goes. No complaints apart from the slow serving process. Meantime back at the Hard Rock DW had chicken noodle soup that she swore was amazing but looks greasy in her photo. Not sure how many of those Jameson’s she had got through by the pool . Will post dinner (Antojitos) tomorrow. Cheers

Glad you're enjoying the report, thanks for reading. Monsieur Paul was lovely and is very low profile among the signatures. Sharing the DX may make it more manageable I can see that
we're total Universal noobs and may as well have walked around with please sell us rubbish written on us My only plan for lunch in the parks had been Simpsons Food Court and we ended up in the wrong park after riding Hulk so it was pick the closest place Promise to go back and read all your earlier Universal reviews! I've heard of that one isn't it table service though? We were determined on the first universal days to consume only proper junk food at least during the day hence the ice cream and burgers I admit it, Universal noob!

For better or worse we'd planned to avoid the table service in the Universal Parks after an overdose at Disney and stick to QS. Those dishes sound nice though and will have a look at Mythos for next time. I have heard it criticised as YLL says below but also some people give very good reviews and I aso have a soft spot for well themed restaurants if it ticks that box Thanks for reading and the advice.
Be nice I've heard a mix of good and bad reviews of Mythos so it's obviously a bit hit and miss. And yes that podcast we both like makes fun of the Best claim that has been up there for the last 15 years No problem, glad you're enjoying Almost finished now!

Dinner - Antojito’s (Universal CityWalk), Emack & Bolio Dessert (Hard Rock Hotel) Dinner was at Antojito’s Authentic Mexican Food on CityWalk. Is it just me that’s a little suspicious of anywhere that needs to put the word authentic in the title? We were dead keen for a Mexican meal by now having not made it to Chuy’s in the Orlando section of the report and only had a brief dabble with Mexican food in EPCOT via my tacos at the Hacienda de San Angel. While we waited for a table the girls had their usual drinks and I ordered a classic Margarita which went down very well, too quickly but there was a lot of ice so I didn’t order another. We were sat soon after. This is a huge restaurant over two floors, only the ground floor was open for a Monday night but it was packed. One of the things that appealed was the Mariachi band who play more or less continuously either inside on the stage or outside interacting with the tables there and presumably helping to attract passers by who associate a short Macarena lesson with the likelihood of a good meal. These provided some good entertainment with a mix of older and newer songs done in the Mariachi style. No Morrissey but a brief moment of horror when DW started joining in with YMCA. Best move on to the food. First we got some chips and salsa, the salsa was very garlicky with just enough tomato and really excellent with the chips. DD and I had to agree to stop after a certain number of chips or we’d have done the whole (large) bowl. I admit to pinching a few extras when she turned round to watch the band. I went for the Mole Enchiladas. Now I’ve never heard of these but I’m a huge fan of Mole sauces that are normally served over meat (Mole is sometimes called the national dish of Mexico but rarely seen on US or UK menus), it’s a kind of spicy, chocolatey dark sauce. Much like the refried bean, Mole is not Instagram friendly Anyway the sauce is usually a favourite but this was a disappointment. Lifeless enchiladas with a light smear of sauce that did not live up to the name. The beef inside was a kind of slow cooked, stringy cut and decent. The accompaniments - guacamole, sour cream, salad and rice and beans were all good though. I still ate most of the the dish so it’s not like it was terrible. It’s more that having bought a couple of 89 cent cartons of Mole sauce from WalMart I could knock up tastier Mole Enchiladas even with my limited skills (not the sides). DD is the family fajita connoisseur and ordered her usual chicken version of this. She liked this a lot. I tried it and it was a good fajita dish, no complaints and a generous size with sides similar to mine but also the usual salsa, grated cheese etc. The chicken was nicely spiced, maybe a touch dry but within acceptable limits. DW was the winner here, picking what sounded like a very similar dish, the beef and chicken fajitas. It wasn;t obvious from the menu but the beef option (Tequila marinated skirt steak) was absolutely beautiful, super tender quality meat that everyone loved. It didn’t have any trace of tequila taste if you’re wondering it was just very tasty steak and a surprise when it arrived looking like the usual beef leather you get in faijitas. If my dish had featured this beef instead I would have been very happy with it. DW scoffed the skirt steak and some of the rest of the fajitas and we declared it a successful meal. The bill came to $57 for the 3 entrees (the drinks were about $30 and paid separately). I thought this was reasonable for the quality and quantity with the live music also factored in and we would come here again. After this we decided to go back to the hotel for an ice cream dessert at the hotel’s ice cream bar/quick service Emack and Bolio’s. I kept wanting to call it Bolack and Emos but somehow managed to resist in front of DD. Anyway the ice cream selection on sale isn’t quite as awe-inspiring as some of the online pics or videos you’ll see of these places around the world but it was still a selection with some interesting flavours and options. We were quite boring though tonight. DD fancied a single scoop cup of Oreo with sprinkles (why?) and I ordered an Oreo milkshake which I was alarmed to see managed to cram at least 6 big scoops of the same ice cream along with milk into a relatively normal sized cup. These came to @$13 and were both okay without being anything special. They were out of a couple of the more interesting Oreo based flavours that we might otherwise have tried. First full day at Universal to follow later. Edited at 12:46 PM. |
