Tusker House » Animal Kingdom

Tusker House » Animal Kingdom

We met up with Chris and Meg and checked-in. Tusker House is one of our favourite restaurants at Walt Disney World, and I think we’ve eaten here at least once on all of our trips over the years. It is a character dining restaurant, and you can meet Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Goofy here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They’re all dressed up in their safari gear and it’s a great way to meet the characters.

Be warned though, this particular character dining is really noisy compared with others we’ve been to. I’m not sure why! As with all character dining, each character will visit your table as you dine. The Cast Member will explain things to you, but generally, when a character comes to your section of the restaurant you’ll soon be visited. Have your camera ready, and your autograph book opened on a blank page, for them to sign! Characters are also used to having selfies taken, so you can always do that too!

In our experience, we’ve always met all the characters during our meal, and if you haven’t met them yet, and you’ve been given your check (bill), don’t feel you have to rush off!

Because we’ve dined here so many times, I didn’t actually bother to take photos of the food, but I can share some from the past as the food has remained largely unchanged since our first dining experience here in 2011. Some dishes may change seasonally, especially at lunch or dinner. Oh, and a quick tip, if you book an ADR for a time that is between different meal times, you may find that the buffet will crossover giving you a chance to try from the other menu as it were.

Tusker House is an all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet. The buffet is laid out really well and is very spacious. As you’ll see in the photo below. You’ll find that there will be some doubling-up of different food stations, so if there is a bit of a line, you can always go to the other one instead.

Tusker House »

Breakfast at Tusker house features traditional [American] breakfast fare, including eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, breakfast potatoes, and of course Mickey Waffles with warm syrup. There is often a carved meat station, and a tray of beef bobotie, which is one of my favourites at Tusker House.

You’ll also find an assortment of pastries, breads, cereal, and fruit. As usual, all Coca-Cola fountain products are included in the price of the buffet, as is Jungle Juice and coffee.

Olive Garden » Rolling Oaks, Kissimmee

Olive Garden » Rolling Oaks, Kissimmee

For dinner this evening we decided on Olive Garden. After picking up Chris and Meg from their Disney Resort, we drove to the one at Rolling Oaks, just off W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee, which is one we have been to before.

Olive Garden is a family-friendly, Italian chain restaurant and the food has always been good when we have visited.

For starter we decided to order a couple of of the Create a Sampler Italiano and share them between the four of us. You can choose 2 or 3 from the following: parmesan zucchini bites, calamari, stuffed mushrooms (with clams), fried mozzarella, lasagna fritta or toasted beef and pork ravioli. Served with marinara sauce and creamy ranch.

Starters…

Sampler Italiano – Calamari, Parmesan Zucchini Bites, Stuffed Mushrooms ($11.99)

Sampler Italiano – Calamari, Toasted Ravioli, Fried Mozzarella ($11.99)

Clearly we love calamari since we ordered it on both samplers! You can’t really go wrong with fried food can you?

I didn’t take photos of all of our main courses -just mine and Steve’s. But I will list what everyone had. We decided against dessert as we were STUFFED. Also included with your meal is a salad, served family style, as well as bread sticks.

Main Course…

Me: Five Cheese Ziti Al Forno – A baked blend of Italian cheeses, pasta and our signature five cheese marinara. ($12.99)

Him: Tour Of Italy – Three OG classics all on one plate! Chicken Parmigiana, Lasagna Classico** and our signature Fettuccine Alfredo – all with homemade sauces made fresh every morning. ($17.99)

Them: Cucina Mia! Create Your Own Pasta Bowl – Rigatoni with Italian Sausage. ($15.29)

Bill: $102.89 + Tax: $7.21 + Tip: $? = $110.10
TiW Discount: $0

Total paid: $110.10

***********************************************

All in all the food was good – it’s not going to win any awards, but if you’re looking for an off-site restaurant and have a craving for pasta, I recommend Olive Garden. We must have paid for the food with a card and the tip in cash, hence no record of it above!

Hard Rock Cafe » Universal City Walk

Hard Rock Cafe » Universal City Walk

As the park started to empty out for Halloween Horror Nights, we made our way to Hard Rock Cafe. Steve and I have never so much as been in a Hard Rock Cafe, let alone the one here. But my brother and his wife have a tradition of seeking out Hard Rock Cafe wherever they are in the world!

We hadn’t made a reservation, but was able to walk in and get a table pretty much straightaway. My brother and Meg had a photo taken with some famous guitar (don’t ask me what!) which they take a charge you for. I took a sly photo of them – but apparently you’re not supposed to – whoops…

Music memorabilia covered pretty much every surface of the restaurant. Our table was sat right next to a picture of Elvis, whom I love, so that was cool! There was a pink Cadillac hanging from the ceiling, and there were some awesome stained glass windows too. On another visit I would have taken the time to take a look around at everything, but not this time around.

Hard Rock Cafe » Universal City Walk

I’m only covering the food that Steve and I ordered. It is so easy to split the bill in the USA – just let them know before and they just open two tabs.

Starters...

Us: Classic Nachos - Tortilla chips piled high and layered with three bean mix, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, pico de gallo, jalapeños and green onions. Garnished with sour cream. Add side of guacamole, grilled chicken, or fajita steak for a little extra. ($11.95 + $3)

I’m surprised that the nachos didn’t just come with guac as standard – but it was an extra, which we added. It was a HUGE plate of nachos which is enough for 4 to share – which we did.

Main Course...

Me: Original Legendary® Burger – The burger that started it all! A juicy 1/2-lb Certified Angus Beef® burger topped with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, golden fried onion ring, crisp lettuce and vine-ripened tomato. ($16.95)

Him: Pulled Pork Sandwich – Hand-pulled smoked pork with tangy slaw and Carolina barbecue sauce on toasted brioche. ($16.95)

Us: Caesar Salad – Freshly chopped romaine lettuce tossed in Caesar dressing with Parmesan crisps and croutons, then topped with shaved Parmesan cheese. ($5)

I remember having a really hard time deciding what to have. I don’t know if the menu was really big (quite likely!) or I was just not feeling it, but I stuck with a regular burger, while Steve had a pulled pork sandwich. I find veggies lacking when on hols in Orlando, so I often order a side salad, usually a Caesar. The food was fine – nothing to write home about.

We decided against desserts as we were too full, but I wanted to include the drinks here as we got a couple of mocktails as well as the option to keep the souvenir glasses.

Drinks...

Me: Wildberry Smoothie – A frozen delight of fresh bananas, piña colada mix, orange juice and Monin Raspberry ($5.99 + $10.99)

Him: Strawberry Basil Lemonade – Fresh strawberries and basil muddled together with made-from-scratch lemonade ($5.99 + $10.99)

***********************************************

Hard Rock Cafe, Universal City Walk

Bill: $129.26 + Tax: $8.41 + Tip: $cash = $137.67
TiW Discount: $n/a
_______________________________________________

Total paid: $137.67

***********************************************

The drinks were yum – I don’t mind a mocktail since I’m often the one driving – and I’m not a big drinker anyway. After paying our bill – looks like we paid in cash for the tip so no record of how much – we popped into the gift shop to pick up our souvenir glasses. Receipts tell me we made a pit stop a Cinnabon to pick up some dessert for later in the evening.

Afternoon Tea at The Garden View Lounge » Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Afternoon Tea at The Garden View Lounge » Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Afternoon Tea is held daily from 12:00pm to 4:00pm in The Garden View Lounge at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Entering through the main doors of the Resort, you’ll find the lounge situated opposite you at the back end of the lobby.

I am an Afternoon Tea fiend – I love it! And being British I wanted to see what the American (and Disney) take would be on this most British of traditions. We were shown to our table, which was laid out with floral cups and saucers, as well as a sugar bowl.

We were given menus which laid out the different Afternoon Tea selections available, which were all named after British Counties.

They all had the same main components – a selection of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, and a selection of pastries – as well, of course, your choice of tea. But each selection had something slightly different:

The Yorkshire Tea starts with caviar and accompaniments, and includes two glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, as well as two pots of tea, and of course the main selections noted above. $175 for two to share.

The Berkshire Tea was the same as The Yorkshire Tea, but without the Champagne. $150 for two to share.

The Cheshire Tea starts with a selection of fruit and cheese, followed by the main components, and a pot of tea. $50 per person. You can add on a glass of Champagne for $65.

The Derbyshire Tea has the main components, a glass of Champagne and a pot of tea. $50 per person.

The Bedfordshire Tea has the main components and a pot of tea. $35 per person.

For children there is Mrs. Potts Tea which has assorted sandwiches, a jam tart and assorted pastries. They can have tea, or special “dark” tea which is chocolate milk. $23 per person

We decided to have The Cheshire Tea, and both chose our tea from the large selection available. I can’t tell you what we had now – I didn’t jot it down unfortunately. When our pots of tea arrived, the Cast Member poured our first cup and then placed a tea-cosy on the pot to keep it warm.

The Garden View Lounge » Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Cheshire Tea

First Course...

Selection of exotic fruits and imported cheeses

The fruit on this plate were kiwi, mango, melon and pineapple, as well as some raisins. The cheeses were Stilton, Brie, Cheddar and one more that I can’t remember or identify. We also had a little pot of honeycomb. Neither of us are fans of blue cheese – I should have thought to say we don’t like it as they may well have substituted it for something different.

Second Course...

Medley of Finger Sandwiches accompanied with Berries, Cheese and Lavosh

The sandwiches on this plate were: Egg Mayonnaise, Open Cream Cheese & Beetroot, Chicken Curry, Cucumber & Boursin. There was also a little onion tartlet, a couple of slices of cheese, a piece of lavosh, which is a sesame seed cracker, and a selection of fruit – blueberries, raspberries and red grapes.

The remaining two courses arrived on one of those cake/pastry stands that you always see at Afternoon Tea. There was a plate each with a jam tart, and a scone accompanied by a serving of apricot jam, cream, and lemon curd. The top plate contained a variety of pastries.

Third Course...

Buttery Scone and Jam Tart

I do love a scone with clotted cream and jam. The cream wasn’t clotted sadly, just tasted like ordinary whipped cream. But the apricot jam and the lemon curd were lovely. A bit mean on portion sizes I have to say! Especially as the scone is quite large. The jam tart reminded me of when I used to make jam tarts with my mum when I was a little girl – lovely!

The finale is your choice of pastries, strawberries and creme, or English trifle. We both decided to have the pastries which were some yummy macarons, swan-shaped cream puffs, and a huge chocolate-dipped strawberry (obviously not a pastry!)

Finale

Choice of delicate House-Made Pastries, Strawberries and Creme, or English Trifle

Accompanied by your choice of tea (charge for additional pots of tea)

$50 ($65 to add two glasses of champagne) per person

Afternoon Tea in the UK can be expensive, around the £35-£50 mark (and more) so at $125 total, was a good price. We had a lovely afternoon, and the food was good. It is something we would definitely do again.

Jiko – The Cooking Place » Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House

Jiko – The Cooking Place » Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House

Jiko – The Cooking Place is a Signature Dining Restaurant. If you are on the Disney Dining Plan, dining here will cost you two credits per person. We have dined here several times now and really enjoy it. As it is a Signature, there is a smart dress code. I tend to wear a tunic top with leggings, or a dress; Steve tends to wear a pair chinos and a shirt. Ultimately don’t turn up in tank tops, flip-flops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, hats for gentlemen, cut-offs, torn clothing and t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics. Which is the direct guideline from the Disney website.

Because the restaurant is that bit more fancy than the regular restaurants at Walt Disney World, (and pricier too), it’s nice to dress up for the occasion.

Discover a delicious blend of traditional African, Indian and Mediterranean cuisine. Steak, chicken, seafood, vegan and vegetarian dishes are infused with a uniquely bold blend of tantalizing flavors and fragrant spices. – Walt Disney World

Jiko – The Cooking Place » Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House

Starters...

Me: Crispy Bobotie Roll – Beef, Boar, Buffalo, Cucumber Raita, Green Mango Atjar, Honey-Roasted Peanuts ($16)

Him: Charcuterie – Lamb Merguez, Smoked Chicken Rillettes, Mangalica Jamón, Duck Sausage, Accoutrements ($20)

We always seem to have a bread service when dining at a Disney Signature Restaurant – for this evening we had some Ethiopian Beer Bread with Wisconsin Butter.

Steve and I are sharers when it comes to starters/appetisers – and this was no exception. We have had the Bobotie Rolls before, and if a Charcuterie board is on the menu (which it often is) we will opt for that.

Main Course...

Me: Grilled Buffalo Ribeye – Rainbow Swiss Chard, Sweet Peppers, Smoked Bacon, Jiko Slap Chips, Port Wine Emulsion ($55)

Him: Nigerian-Spiced Pork Shank – Brussels Sprouts, Ancient Grains Risotto, Apple Butter ($40)

Side: Braai Macaroni & Cheese – Chakalaka, House-Made Boerewors Sausage, Provolone, Fontina, Gruyère, Asiago ($14)

The food was amazing, and full of wonderful flavours. A visit to Jiko for me isn’t complete without their Mac ‘n’ Cheese – it is so good, and in my opinion the best Mac ‘n’ Cheese at Walt Disney World!

We were too stuffed for dessert, so passed on that, although our server did bring us out a plate with a couple of coconut macaroons with our bill. Both for me since my husband doesn’t like coconut!

ABC Commissary » Hollywood Studios

ABC Commissary is a quick/counter service restaurant serving the usual type of food like burgers, but also a few more fancy things like steak, salmon and salads. I don’t actually have any photos of the food because both Steve and I had something we have eaten several times in the past – a burger and fries, and a chicken sandwich and fries. It’s theme park food, and fills a hole when you’re hungry!

In fact, I can just share these photos from 2015’s trip and our lunch at Roaring Fork at Wilderness Lodge, because they’re pretty much identical throughout all of Disney! We also ordered a cup of Sprite each and a Darth Vader Cupcake. Disney make the best cupcakes!

Main Course...

Me: 1/3 lb. Angus Bacon Cheeseburger – served with fries ($11.29)

Him: Chicken Club – served with fries ($9.99)

Dessert...

US: Star Wars Darth Vader Cupcake ($5.99)

Manny’s Chophouse » 8520 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy

Manny’s Chophouse

We decided on a fairly early dinner as Chris and Meg still needed pack their suitcases. Everyone wanted steak, but we didn’t want to go to Longhorn again. Instead we decided to visit Manny’s Chophouse.

I have heard so many people rave about the original Manny’s in Haine’s City (which is about a 45 minute drive from Walt Disney World) but over the years we have never quite made it. Then my friend told me that a new one had opened on the 192 in Kissimmee, so naturally we decided to see what all the fuss was about.

I will say in advance, we didn’t think it to be that great… maybe the original is a lot better, but we were not blown away by their steaks (or their service) like we had been led to believe all these years.

We got to Manny’s at about 7:00pm and didn’t have to wait too long for a table – maybe out 15 minutes? They do not take reservations here, but you can call ahead and get on their waitlist.

The theme of the restaurant is very cool – very road trip USA, and I really liked the decor.

We decided against a starter because included with all entrées, is their Famous Endless Salad Bowl with Manny’s Garlic Ranch Dressing, or Caesar Salad, as well as a choice of side, and Fresh Baked Yeast Rolls.

For drinks, the boys got huge mugs of beer, and Meg had a Fuzzy Mango cocktail (mango, peach & vodka) and I had a regular old ice tea.

Bearing in mind we didn’t have a starter, it was an hour between us sitting down at a table and being served our steaks – the restaurant wasn’t full either, so this was quite frustrating. We all had ribeye steaks, which is described in the menu as the the juiciest of all steaks with a rich mellow flavour, and their steak lovers favourite.

We also had a variety of sides, and made substitutes, which are all things you can do according to the menu. But then our meals came up without their proper sides, and then we had to wait for them, and all around it wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Our server was friendly, don’t get me wrong, but he also seemed a bit on the flakey side which is why I think we had so many mistakes.

I had decided to sub my side and have mac ‘n’ cheese, as well as sauteed mushrooms. Which didn’t arrive, and when they did, the server just plonked a tiny cupful of boiled mushrooms – blergh. Steve’s rice and black beans wasn’t particularly hot, and all around it was just a mess.

Even the steaks were not that tasty – and we had all just wished we had gone to Longhorn instead…

We decided against dessert and paid our bill. I know it shows it as no tip left in my bill below, but there is every chance we just left a cash tip.

I did mention to the floor manager about the service, and the messed up items, but didn’t make a fuss of it. It was our last night together and it didn’t need to be ruined!

I hope it was just an off night for them, but after this experience, it’s not likely we would return – not to this location at least. Like I said, maybe the original in Haines City is a lot better.

Red Lobster » 7780 W Irlo Bronson Memorial HWY

Red Lobster

After two years of doing the Disney Dining Plan, this was our first time back at Red Lobster since 2013. The menu seems largely unchanged since then – one thing definitely not off the menu are the free, and unlimited Cheddar Bay Biscuits which are to die for. They are so yummy – soft, buttery and full of flavour – delicious!

You can buy a packet mix of these biscuits in the supermarket – not sure if I have seen them in Walmart of Publix, but I’ve definitely seen them. I really must buy a package next time we go so that I can make them back home in the UK!

Starters...

Me: Crispy Calamari and Vegetables – A generous portion of hand-breaded, golden-friend calamari, broccoli and red bell peppers, prepared to order. Served with tangy marinara and creamy ranch. ($9.99)

Him: New England Clam Chowder – cup ($4.99)

Steve and I are that couple that often shares food, especially somewhere like Red Lobster where the dishes are very shareable. We’ve had both of these starters before, and they both taste good. The calamari and vegetable platter is huge, so definitely worth sharing with others!

Main Course...

Me: Endless Shrimp – Shrimp Linguini Alfredo & Grilled Sriracha Shrimp ($17.99)

The Endless Shrimp is an offer that Red Lobster do from time to time, so I can’t find this on their menu at the moment, but from the bill I can see what I ordered. I’m more amazed at myself for the carb (pasta), on carb (rice), on carb (baked potato) over load! Since it is endless you could reorder the shrimp portion of your plate as many times as you wanted to.

Him: Bar Harbor Lobster Bake – Named for the idyllic seaside town of Bar Harbor, Maine, where lobster bakes are a way of life. Split-roasted petite Maine lobster tails with shrimp, bay scallops, mussels and tomatoes, piled over a bed of linguini in a garlic and white wine broth. ($28.99)

How awesome does this bowl of seafood look? I definitely had pangs of “I ordered the wrong thing” when Steve’s lobster bake came to the table! Which is ultimately why we end up sharing food because he quite often seems to order the better dish!

We also had a couple of iced teas to go with, but was way too stuffed for dessert.
