Split stay, Disney 1st or 2nd week?
Good morning
I am in the very early stages of planning for our Feb 2020 Florida holiday (when I should be packing for our DLP holiday in 5 days ) The original plan was a villa for 2 weeks. We aren’t an all in one room family, our trip to NYC this eater proved that once and for all! Kids will be 13 and 15. However now I am wondering about taking advantage of the free dining offer (if it is still offered 2020) 2 weeks would def be a no no for us as there may be a murder by the end! But the family swears they will be fine for 5-7 nights. I have looked at AKL and prices (based on 2019 prices) look good. I did look at villas on site, but don’t poop money so that’s not an option Sooooooo, if you do a mixed stay which way do you do it? I will only hire a car for the villa week. So I think the first week in the villa, so we can pop to the shops and stock up on supplies, also get well rested after the flights, time change, before moving to AKL 2nd week. Kids would prefer to go straight to Disney and relax and do more universal 2nd week. Any suggestions? Trip reports? Thanks in advance |

You need to stay onsite first as otherwise your Disney tickets won't be valid for your first week if you're booking with free ddp.

We had the same dilemna, chose to do Disney for the last week as felt it would be better to do the other parks and then "upgrade" to Disney and the dining plan but I guess it's personal choice.
With regards the tickets, as Orlando noted they show as only being available from when you check in at the Disney hotel. I emailed them as we have 14 day tickets but only 8 nights at Disney and then home, so losing 5/6 days, their reply is below. "We are so excited to hear that you will be visiting us next year! If you would like to activate your tickets early, you will have to go to a Theme Park for your first day and speak with a Cast Member in Guest Relations. Guest Relations at the Theme Parks can activate your tickets no more than 10-days before your stay with us on the property. Please note that you will not be able to make FastPass+ selections for the days that are before your stay due to the tickets being attached to your reservation. Once the tickets are activated at the Theme Parks, you will be able to make FastPass+ selections for the days you have not already made for." |

Personally I’d say Disney first week! With the time difference you will wake up early the first couple of days anyway so can really make use of the EMH. We’ve never had to recover from the outbound flights so always do parks first and spend the second half of the holiday at a more relaxed pace.

When my kids were teens and we needed two rooms, we did split stays to keep costs reasonable. My experience is always go from smaller to bigger. Otherwise small feels really small. And it will feel even smaller if you are at risk for feeling too much togetherness.

Thanks everyone, that has helped massively. 1st week it will be! Also helps I suppose getting the magical express after the flight.
Also, how have people sorted the car hire out for the 2nd week without the hassle of going back to the airport? |

Having just organised a split stay myself this weekend I was just about to ask this very same question!
I was thinking that you could get the Magical Express back to the airport if required (what does the rest of the party do?), but wondering if that is actually required. |
