Expedition East Coast: Day 20 Mystic Seaport, Yale & New Haven

7 August

We all slept okay and after we got up, we headed to the breakfast area which was next to the indoor pool. It was a bit crowded and the selection wasn't great but it was all okay and we managed to find a table outside to eat.

The super friendly reception staff were once again SUPER Friendly at check out, asking us where we were heading next, and recommending a stop at Mystic Seaport on the way. We were probably being far too cynical and British but we found all the questions about our plans to be a little bit creepy, even though they were probably kindly meant.

It wasn't long before we were back on the road and able to tick Rhode Island off our "States visited" list. There didn't seem to be a lot to see there but by all accounts the beaches are nice.

Mystic was just the right place for a stop, so we headed into Mystic Seaport and parked up. We almost expected to see the hotel guy waiting for us there . . .

There is a museum but at $30 each for entrance, we decided to give it a miss. Apparently the Vikings were here and there was a big exhibition on them. We hung out near the boats and a huge anchor instead.

Sun's out, guns out

We had planned to have some lunch here but when we walked into Friendly's, the queue to be seated was huge so we decided to give it a miss and stop at the next junction instead.

This turned out to be an excellent plan as we spotted a Denny's just off the highway in New London. There we could have a Super Slam for $5.99 each which was superb value and along with really friendly service, it was a good place to stop. I don't think you get a lot of British tourists there and our server was fascinated with our accents.

Back on the road, it wasn't too long before we arrived at New Haven where we wanted to visit Yale. We got a map to orientate ourselves and set off for a self-guided tour.

Yale is very pretty and felt much more picturesque than Harvard. We couldn't go in most of the buildings but it was fine to wander around and look at them.

The Beinecke Library was open so we went to have a look. We love a good library and have been known to call into the British Library for a mooch around if we've got time before a train . . .

It reminded us of the British library with the stack of older books in the middle and displays of a Guttenberg Bible and Audobon's Birds of America.

Hannah was in her element.

We all enjoyed looking around Yale and were glad to have taken the time to visit. MIT will always be the coolest university but there was a good sense of history at Yale.

Our hotel was on the outskirts of New Haven in Milford. As we had assumed this was our last night, we had booked somewhere that sounded quite nice so went for the Hyatt Place as it had a big rooms and a large hot tub.

While the room was indeed big, the TV was tiny and furthermore, it didn't work properly and kept giving us error messages. We then decided to try the gym and the whirlpool hot tub - the gym was okay but the hot tub also wasn't working. When we asked at the desk, they just shrugged and said it was going to be fixed. So far, so not good.

Back in the room, we kept trying with the TV, resetting it as advised by the desk but it still wasn't working properly. We had also made the classic mistake of not checking the food options nearby before booking. When we checked, the nearest option was a dive bar called Gippers. Er, no thanks!

Fortunately, we had spotted the sign for a Cracker Barrel and headed there instead, which turned out to be a great idea. We had a really nice meal with vegetables (yay!) and, like lunch, it was pretty bargainous. We also picked up some Brownie Brittle and a mug from the store. Got to love a Cracker Barrel! Of course, there had to be checkers and rocking chairs.

Back at the hotel, the TV was still playing up again and we were getting quite fed up of it. The beds were also quite uncomfortable and we were hoping that the breakfast at least would make up for it.

What a shame about the hotel!

Got to love Denny’s - their breakfasts are always a good thing

I hadn’t really appreciated where Yale was!

Love a Denny’s and Cracker Barrell too. Shame about the hotel though, especially when you thought it was going to be much nicer

I think Yale is the main thing in New Haven. We'd forgotten how good a Denny's can be.

We only discovered Cracker Barrel last year - can't believe we went for so long without . . .

We were disappointed about the hotel - "fur coat and no knickers" was how I described it!

Oh dear a nice day spoiled a bit by the dodgy room and diner.. although sounds like Cracker Barrel saved the day for you. That library does look awesome.

We thought the price of Mystic Seaport was a bit steep too but were glad we paid up as it turned out to be good value for money. The place was enormous with boat building and renovation going on, lots of re-located old buildings and a few moored sailing ships to visit. There were lots of guides around talking about what went on in a lot of the buildings as well as the Viking exhibition. (We were 3 adults 56,56 & 24.)

BTW Mystic was our "dodgy" hotel stop last year.
