Day 2: Tonight We Feast! / Hibiscus & Holly At The Poly 2017

Day 2: Magic Kingdom
Character Breakfast at The Crystal Palace / Polynesian Twilight Feast (In-Room Dining)
December 8, 2017

Regular readers of my trip reports know that I take a lot of photos, and that I can't possibly include them all!
You will be able to find all of the photos from Hibiscus & Holly At The Poly 2017 in my Flickr Collection of albums from this trip.
To see just today’s extra photos, you can view this Flickr Album.
You can find my Hibiscus & Holly At The Poly 2017 Trip Index here.

We are over at Magic Kingdom today for breakfast at The Crystal Palace with Winnie the Pool and his pals Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet! Well, it was more like a brunch time – our reservation was at around 11.45am!

The DVC Longhouses of Moorea, Pago Pago, and Tokelau (where we were staying) are very close to the Transportation & Ticket Center (TTC) where you can catch the Monorail or Ferryboat over to Magic Kingdom. You can also catch the Epcot Monorail here too. I really love that feature of Poly, and is just one of the things that makes me happy that it is our DVC Home Resort!

The big change this year was the security lines. Instead of being outside the gates of Magic Kingdom, they were actually now set up at the TTC. I think this was to control crowds more over at the entrance which is fine, I understand their need for security in this day and age. However, when visiting Epcot, you then have to do security all over again! I am hoping that by the time we go again they’ll have figured out a more efficient system.

It is a shame that they don’t have a Security Guard on the path from Poly to TTC for the resort guests, so that we could bypass the crowds. They have them set up at the Resort Monorail Stations… just sayin’!

Going through security

Security is a long line of benches with a Guard at the top end who checks bags. You can line up on either side, so pick the shorter side! The Security Guard checks bags alternately from each side. After bag check you may be selected to go through the metal detector where you have to empty your pockets – coins, keys etc. If you bleep, they use a wand detector too. It seems to be random who they pick – Steve always got selected, Liam sometimes, but me – never.

If you don’t have a bag, you can bypass the bag check and go through – but you may be stopped for the metal detector though.

If you have a bag, any bag, be it small, medium, large, camera, backpack, nappy/diaper – it doesn’t matter what kind, it has to be searched.

So my tip is to have it opened and ready for a Security Guard to check inside. This will make their job easier, less stressful for you as you won’t be faffing around trying to open everything, and make the process a lot quicker for everyone waiting in line. In my experience some guards are more thorough than others – they will sometimes undo zips – inner and outer, and sometimes check bags inside – e.g, a purse, or a spectacles case.

Security will also check things like the basket below a pushchair/stroller, or on the front or back of an ECV.

Ultimately, do not take things into the park that you shouldn’t. The Restricted Personal Items page on the Walt Disney World website will be the most up-to-date source. While on the site, you could also have a read of the Park Rules and Regulations, so that you aren’t disappointed when as an adult you arrive dressed up as a Disney Princess and are denied access!

Once through security you can then take the Monorail or the Ferryboat over to Magic Kingdom! I think everyone should do the Ferryboat at least once, but it takes a lot longer than the Monorail, so if you need to be over at the Park, take that mode of transportation instead.

Also something new for us – and I guess just because of the time of year – were lines roped off for the Monorail – I know it’s going to get busy because of it being Christmas time, but the internet assured me that this first week was not as busy as next…

After all that helpful info, lets get back to stepping foot inside Magic Kingdom at Christmastime! You are greeted by a huge Christmas Tree adorned with candles, ribbons, candy canes, gingerbread shapes, ornaments, and popcorn garlands. A lovely tree indeed (but I think the one at Disneyland Paris is prettier! Ooh controversy!)

Just as we entered the park, the Main Street Trolley Singers (not sure of their actual name, or if they have one!), dressed in their seasonal finery, pulled up and started to perform. It really gets you into the festive spirit! I did film some on my phone, so when I finally get around to putting all the footage together, I’ll try to remember to update this! Give me a nudge in about 6 months just in case I forget!

We still had some time before our reservation at The Crystal Palace, so naturally I had to pop into Emporium for a little looksee at the merchandise! I was itching to buy ALL the things, especially the Christmas homewares, but I had to restrain myself as we were trying to be a bit more strict with our spends this year.

And of course I had to buy some stuff, including new Christmassy Ears with red and green sequins – to wear, and to take the photo below! Some people take photos in front of walls… I take photos of Cinderella Castle through Minnie Ears! As I was setting up the shot, a couple of people around me said how cool it was and started to do the same. I didn’t start this trend, I saw on it on the ‘Gram and think it is a cool shot!

As we got nearer to The Crystal Palace we could see the Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street Party going on around the hub in front of Cinderella Castle – I’m not a fan of this updated parade – it used to be called Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! which I think had better music, and more characters on the floats. As it happens, the parade – or street party as it is officially called, is getting another update for Mickey’s 90th Birthday in November 2018 – hopefully that will continue throughout his birthday year, as I’d love to see it on on 2019 Spring trip!

We then checked-in for our Advance Dining Reservation (ADR) for breakfast with Pooh and Pals at The Crystal Palace. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our table, but ADRs are not a guaranteed time, just that you’ll have a table waiting for you around that time. More often than not you’ll have to wait a few minutes at least, we rarely get seated straight away.

And I noticed that it’s not always to do with the volume of tables free in the restaurant itself, it’s to do with the servers and how many tables they can handle. So when you go in and see empty tables and wonder why you had to wait 20 minutes, it’ll be because of the server’s current volume of guests. I realised this a few years back when we were having breakfast at Whispering Canyon Cafe, and there were loads of empty tables around us. The Cast Member who greets guests, asked a server if they were ready for more tables, and she said not yet. So, there you go! It might not be the case everywhere, but as I grew up in the restaurant industry, I seem to notice every little thing when we dine out anywhere!

Right, back to this Disney breakfast! This has become somewhat a tradition for us on one of our days at Magic Kingdom. We’ve had breakfast (and lunch) here several times now (including for my 40th birthday trip back in 2016)

The Crystal Palace is a Buffet with Character. It’s an all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet, and while you dine, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger visit each table for photos, autographs and a bit of fun!

Character Dining Tips

My tips for Character Dining with kids is to place them on the outside edge of the table so that they can easily get up to greet/hug the character. It’s also wise to have your camera on and ready to go, as well as having your autograph book open on the page you want to sign, and the pen ready to use.

All these things help the experience of meeting the Disney Characters smooth and speedy. You aren’t rushed by any means, and if a kid is still hugging a character, they’re not just going to run off – but there are lots of tables for them to get through so I figure just make everything nice and easy for everyone involved.

Oh, and another thing, explain to your children that they will be meeting the characters, so they don’t need to hijack them on another table – I’ve seen that happen a few times, and have even seen characters gently guide the wandering child away!

In my experience you should meet all the characters at least once as they work the various dining areas. In The Crystal Palace there are two big dining areas, and two characters go around all the tables, then switch over. You will find that your server will leave the bill for you as you are still eating. Do not feel you have to rush if you’ve not met everyone yet, you’ve paid for that experience, don’t waste it!

And Character Dining isn’t just for kids! We are all adults now and still have fun with meeting the characters – it’s a great way to meet them without having to line up for ages, or worry about grabbing a FastPass+ time. You just have to make sure you grab an ADR instead!

As I said earlier, The Crystal Palace is a buffet – for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – and it’s all-you-care-to-enjoy which means you can go up to the buffet as many times as you like.

You’ll find your usual American breakfast food staples like bacon, eggs, sausages, sausage patties, breakfast potatoes, biscuits and gravy. You’ll also find other dishes like corned beef hash and potato casserole. There is also an omelette station which in all these years we’ve never had from, so have to rectify that on a future visit!

In addition, there are cereals, fruit, pastries, pancakes, Mickey Waffles (they’re on the kiddie’s station, but anyone can have them!) and a sweet treat called Pooh’s Breakfast Lasagne, which is layers of waffles, pancakes, berries, pound cake and custard – so save room for that!

Drinks like coffee, tea, milk, juice, and fountain beverages are included in the price which varies based on the time of the year which will include the seasons, as well as if it is a weekday or weekend.

Ooh, nearly forgot the flower topiaries of Pooh and Pals! They were dressed for the Holidays – a cute touch!

RESTAURANT, LOCATION

I forgot to mention that we bought a Tables In Wonderland (TiW) card again this year as it gave us good savings on our 2016 trip.

This is a paid for discount card for Florida residents ($175), Annual Passholders, and DVC Members ($150). This gives you a 20% discount on food and beverages (including alcohol) at over 100 participating restaurants at Walt Disney World Resort. 18% tip/gratuity is added automatically – no matter how big the size of the party. It is valid for up to 10 people on one check, and you also receive free Resort Valet or Theme Park parking for dining purposes. The TiW card is valid for one year, there are blackout dates, and certain events you cannot use it on. You can read more about Tables In Wonderland on Walt Disney World’s website, along with a list of all the participating restaurants.

You can purchase the card at Guest Relations at Disney Springs, or at any of the 4 Walt Disney Disney Theme Parks. We bought ours in Magic Kingdom on the way to The Crystal Palace that morning.

After having our fill of the breakfast buffet, hugging Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet, and paying our bill, we headed out into the Florida sunshine. It was a very gorgeous 28°C, which made me happy as I was worrying about it being cold in December!

We went in the direction of Adventureland, which is the land we pretty much always start in. It was very busy – a lot busier than I was expecting to be honest with you – but we made our way to Jungle Cruise for our FastPass+ time. For Christmas, this ride gets a overlay with decorations strew throughout the ride, as well as a seasonal script for the Skippers. It also gets called Jingle Cruise. I don’t think any other ride at Walt Disney World gets an overlay (I am sure they do more at Disneyland) so I knew we had to get on this ride!

The 10 minute river journey is an exotic adventure! You drift past a canopy of green trees and flowering orchids along the South American Amazon. Then you’ll see a camp overrun by curious gorillas, and maybe even a massive python along the African Congo! Along the River Nile there are bathing elephants, hippos and hungry lions! Beware the tribe of headhunters that have been spotted in the area! Baboons, cobras and other wild creatures call an old shrine their home on the Mekong River.

Your trusty Skipper will navigate you safely through, while regaling you with stories of the surroundings and several jokes. Look out for Trader Same as your journey comes to an end.

This ride is Classic Disney – it’s very tongue-in-cheek, and the jokes are groan-worthy, but it’s a fun ride, and we enjoy it. Some Skippers are better than others (a bit like Kilimanjaro Safaris), and I think your ride is made a whole lot better when the Cast Member has their script down pat. And if they talk loudly through their intercom. Some we’ve had have been really quiet, that the jokes don’t land.

Plus-Size Rider Guide: Bench seats, no restraints. You will need to step down into the boat, as well as step back out. You can hold onto one of the poles to balance if needs be – or a friendly Cast Member will help you if required.

While in the area, we also popped into the Enchanted Tiki Room, because that is one of my favourite things to do in Adventureland! No photos as I just wanted to enjoy the show for a change instead of trying to figure out if I have my camera settings right! Dark rides are still on my things of learning how to do with my camera list. However, let’s all sing!

🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵

In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room
In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room
All the birds sing words
And the flowers croon
In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room

🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵

We then crossed back into Main Street USA and stake a spot in front of Cinderella Castle for the stage show, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire.

Because it took me so long to write my 2016 trip report, where I wrote about this show (and it replacing Dream Along with Mickey) it feels like I’m repeating myself too soon if I write it all again here. In short Dream Along with Mickey – my favourite show ever, absolutely loved it; Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire – boo hiss, you replaced my favourite show. However, it’s not all that bad… it’s no Dream Along With Mickey, but you can’t have it all!

In that report I also mentioned that I thought the character’s costume changed with the seasons, and I can now confirm that yes they do! For this show they change costumes into winter finery for the closing song.

In preparation for this joyous festival, Mickey and friends have ventured far and wide to gather Disney pals from all over to star in a royal friendship faire.

Goofy has invited Tiana and friends from the Land of the Bewitching Bayous to infuse a little spice of New Orleans jazz in the party. Donald Duck brings some new friends he met at the Snuggly Duckling from the Land of Enchanted Woods to shake their tail feathers. Daisy has asked Rapunzel and Flynn to “comb” over and sing along. Mickey even recruited Olaf, Anna and Elsa from the Land of the Mystic Mountains to cast some extra cool touches!

This grand affair culminates in the joining of classic and contemporary Disney Characters in a spectacular show featuring lively dancing, dazzling effects, an original song and memorable music from The Princess and the Frog, Tangled and Frozen.
– Walt Disney World

I don’t have much more to say of the show itself – I like that there are newer Disney characters in it, and that [most of] the songs are familiar, so you can sing along from the first time you watch it – so I’ll just finish this section off with some photos of the show.

After the opening number, Tiana, Naveen and Louis from The Princess and The Frog bring some New Orleans jazz to the stage with “Down in New Orleans”, “When We’re Human”, “Dig a Little Deeper”. Goofy leads this section of the show, and the closing number with everyone dancing to “Dig a Little Deeper” is fab.

donald Duck introduces a band of pub thugs from The Snuggly Duckling who run amok before Rapunzel, Flynn Ryder and Daisy Duck enter the stage. Daisy manages to get them all to stop fighting, and tells Donald off from bringing these ruffians to the party – when it should have been Rapunzel and Flynn! Rapunzel then reassures Donald and Daisy that the thugs might seem a bit rough around the edges, and Flynn mentions that they do grow on you after a while…like a fungus! Then they launch into “I’ve Got A Dream” because everyone has dreams, even this rough band of boys!

Finally from the land of Arendelle, Mickey surprises Minnie with Olaf – who comes out singing a tiny part of “In Summer” – followed by Anna and Elsa who have seemingly been looking for him. Olaf introduces the sisters to the Mouse power couple, and Minnie gushes over the pair of them as she admires them so much, and wishes how she could be more like them.

Anna then goes on to say how everyone has their own talents that makes them special, and you have to remember to stay true to yourself, before launching into “Let It Go”.

As you can see, Minnie Mouse is in awe of Elsa! It’s really quite sweet!

Once the Frozen gang go off on their merry way, Mickey asks Minnie if he enjoyed the surprised. She replies saying how she loved it, and that it was the best day ever! Mickey responds by telling Minnie that every day with her is the best day ever ♥ That’s love right there!

Mickey and Minnie then run off stage as they need to get ready for the Royal Friendship Faire Grand Dance. The visitors are welcomed back on stage for a dance to instrumental versions of their songs. Finally, Sir Mickey and Lady Minnie are introduced and everyone joins in the dance to “With a Smile and a Song” (from Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs) which I think is a nice touch as Snow White is the first Animated Classic.

Mickey has one final surprise up his sleeve with some fireworks to close out the show. As I’ve rewatched it on video to tell you a bit more about it, I realise that actually it’s a sweet little show! (But it’s not my Dream Along With Mickey! I will yammer on about that for years to come!)

Definitely worth watching if you are in the Castle Stage area – the show is performed several times a day, showtimes are posted on a board in front of the stage.

Clearly too much Mead at this party!

By now it was late afternoon, and Liam wanted to go and spend some time in the pool. He went off ahead of us partway through the show, and we followed him once it had ended. But not before some last photos of the day in Magic Kingdom…

Starting with Partners – the statues of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. The plaque on the statue’s plinth says:

“We believe in our idea: a family park where parents and children could have fun – together” – Walt Disney

I always take photos of the balloons – I love them! Something to buy on the way out of the park and float in your room for the duration of your holiday. I did that in 2015 with a purple Mickey balloon. It was, I think, $15; so when you see a lone balloon floating high in the sky because it got loose from someone’s hand, I feel the pain of that expensive balloon!

If you buy a balloon, tie it to a stroller if you’re using one, or round your child’s (or your) wrist so that it doesn’t go skyward!

And finally the view down Main Street USA to the Town Square with the Christmas decorations and the Magic Kingdom Christmas Tree.

Judging by people sitting on the kerb, I would say it is approaching Festival of Fantasy Parade time… which we didn’t see a single time on this trip!

Once back at Poly, we joined Liam in the Oasis Pool. This is the quiet pool, could be classed as the DVC pool as it’s right next to the DVC Longhouses. We were in Tokelau on this trip and our room was literally one of the closest you could get to the pool which was good for Liam as he spent a lot of time in the pool on this trip!

It would appear that since our first stay at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in 2016, the cabanas at this pool are no longer free. There is a charge to use them, which is likely to be seasonal too. Disney’s Mom Panel tells me it is $25 for half a day, and $40 for a full day. The fee is for the seating area under the cabana are only, no extra amenities are included.

I am guessing that people were probably hogging these by leaving their towels and stuff, which is why a charge came into play. A shame really, as for the prices people pay to stay at a Deluxe Resort, having this additional fee is a bit off in my opinion. Perhaps in the height of summer it gets really busy here, but I’ve never seen more than maybe a couple dozen people here at one time. There is a LOT of seating around this pool!

We didn’t have dinner reservations for that evening; instead we decided to try the Polynesian Twilight Feast, which is the in-room dining from ‘Ohaha – the popular table service restaurant at the Poly. I had read about this online and thought it would be something different to try out.

I had also read that you get a lot of food, so don’t need to order for your whole party – you could get away with maybe one serving of the food between the two of you; whereas in the restaurant itself you have to pay for everyone at the table.

Because ‘Ohana is busy and it can sometimes be hard to snag an ADR here, so the Polynesian Twilight Feast is a great option if you are staying at the Poly.

It is served between 5:00pm and 10:00pm, and it’s best to place your order several hours in advance. We phoned through in the morning, and ordered the Feast for two, for the three of us – which was plenty of food.

The cost was $40 for adults (ages 10 and over) or $20 for children (ages 9 and under). I have read on forums, that this has now changed, and they’ve done away with the kids price and upped the adult price; as well as (allegedly) making the portions smaller.

I cannot confirm this, but next time we stay at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, I’ll update my findings. Although, to be fair, that won’t be until at least 2020, so who knows by then what it will be!

Polynesian Twilight Feast

Experience a complete in-room dining adventure for the entire family. You will enjoy the same delicacies feature in the ‘Ohana dining room.

A selection of guests’ favorites including Spiced Chicken Wings, Asian-Style Pot Stickers, Yakisoba Noodles, Stir-Friend Vegetables and our special ‘Ohana Sunset Punch; followed with our Skewered Meats and Oak-Grilled Shrimp seasoned and cooked to perfection.

Then we top it all off with our famous Bread Pudding which finishes this magnificent feast.

Not mentioned in the menu description is the huge bowl of yummy salad which is described as a Mixed Greens Salad with a Lilikoi Dressing. What is lilikoi you ask? Well, *searches online* it’s a fruit very similar to a passion fruit. I love salad any way, but this one is particularly delicious. I love the edamame beans and the crispy wontons as they add a different texture to the salad.

You also get a portion of Welcome Bread – which is a Pineapple-Coconut Bread – that I don’t actually think tastes much of either!

When you dine at ‘Ohana, these two items are your starter. With the Polynesian Twilight Feast everything is served together, so just tuck right in – and that we did!

The noodles and vegetables came served piled high on a plate with the pot stickers on top; and then another plate was filled with rice, cubes of steak, sticky chicken wings, and peel-and-eat shrimp – so good! We also had pots of peanut, and sweet-n-sour sauces to go with.

We also had a big jug full of Sunset Punch which I believe is POG juice – pineapple, orange and guava – topped off with Sprite.

Dessert was the delicious ‘Ohana Bread Pudding – which we had to defer to eating well after our main meal as we were too full! It comes with a pot of caramel sauce with sliced bananas. It doesn’t come with the ice-cream that is served with it in ‘Ohana though. It’s still good though!

***********************************************

Polynesian Twilight Feast » Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort In-Room Dining

Bill: $83 + Tax: $5.40 + Tip: $14.40 = $102.80
TiW Discount: $0
_______________________________________________

Total paid: $102.80

***********************************************

The extra $3 on the bill is a “trip charge”, and the tip is an automatic 18%. I guess you can also tip the Cast Member in cash too… it’s a heavy tipping culture in the USA.

We really enjoyed our Polynesian Twilight Feast, and paid a lot less than we would have done in ‘Ohana for the three of us. Something we would definitely do again on future trips.

After dinner, we had a wander through the resort, and I did a spot of shopping in Bou-Tiki – because of course I would!

And with that, today is over! Tomorrow is the first of our Disney Resort Christmas Tree Trails – where we visited seven different Resorts. Throughout this trip we literally visited every single Walt Disney World Resort Hotel to look at their Christmas decorations!

The Twilight Feast looks so yummy. I love all your photos. There was one in the additional photos you have that reminded me of when the Brady Bunch went to Hawaii. The one with the orange furniture .

I haven't seen that, but I totally get what you mean! I love the retro vibe of the 60s/70s that Poly has! Those seats are in the "lobby" area of each DVC longhouse, just opposite them are large basket chairs which I love I always joke (obvs) that I'm going to pinch one and hide it in my luggage bwhahahahah
