We tend to avoid theme parks at weekends hence Mall@Millenia yesterday and today we decided to go to Disney Springs. We check into our Disney hotel tomorrow but as we are only there until Saturday, we won't want to make a trip to DS during that time, so we decided to do it today instead.

We got one of the hotel cars out at around 10am, went to the World of Disney store to pick up our $100 gift card and then headed to Chef Art Smiths Homecoming for our 11am brunch booking.

Early though it was, we decided to indulge in a mimosa, I went for the blackberry version whilst Nev went for traditional orange, which for some reason Chef Art Smiths calls a "princess mimosa".

I had picked out a couple of starters in advance that I hoped to talk Nev into, the first was the devilled eggs, which I knew he would have no trouble with. The second was the fried green tomatoes, I knew this would be a harder sell as he is not great with tomatoes, but I emphasised that they come with ham and showed him some pictures, which seemed to do the trick.

For main, I wanted to try what this restaurant is famous for, mainly the fried chicken, so I selected chicken and doughnuts. I was also able to select one side and I decided to try the grits, a totally new experience for me. Nev chose the short rib hash for his main and gallantly selected mash for his side, just in case I didn't like my grits and wanted mash instead. Our server asked if he wanted gravy on the mash, but as it was the untested American "gravy", we asked for it on the side.

The starters were really good and I was pleased that Nev enjoyed the fried tomatoes, I thought he would, if only I could persuade him to try them. . We both loved the eggs too, although Nev pointed out that the cayenne pepper did not provide the kick that might have been expected. This was true, there was no kick, but I still enjoyed them a lot.

The mains were also well received, Nev did not have a bad word to say about his. Although neither of us enjoyed the "gravy" that came with the side of mash. My chicken was soft and delicious, the coating had an unexpected sweetness to it, noticeable to me as somebody that does not have a sweet tooth. I liked my first time experience of grits too, it was like something in between lumpy mash and polenta. I don't think it would have stood up by itself but it was nice as an accompaniment, Nev thought it was bland.

We were really full by this time so decided to take a few bits of our meal to go. Overall this was a fabulous brunch and we rated it a 9.

Glad you enjoyed Homecomin’ - we usually go there for lunch on the day we leave. My husband loves the meatloaf.

Homecomin' looks so good! We had an ADR there last August but swapped it for House of Blues, which I regretted as it was nowhere near as good as our 2016 trip! We're only onsite for 3 days this year but might try and fit it in!

Love the different food options!

Not food related but wanted to show off these purchases made at Disney Springs for our two pugs. We have a black pug, who I think will be Darth Vadar and we have a fawn pug who will be R2D2.

The brunch had a more limited menu, no meatloaf. I did wonder if I should change it to a regular mealtime to get the wider menu, but it worked for us in the end.

Claudette. Excellent pictures and the food does look really nice.

I would have picked the fried green tomatoes and the short rib. Only thing I would be fussy about would be if the eggs were sloppy, can't abide that.
The overall presentation of the devilled egss is lovely. So nice when a bit of care is taken as invariably if it looks nice it is nice.
Well done.

The eggs, specifically the "whipped" bit were not at all sloppy, they were creamy but firm. We loved the ceramic egg tray they were served in.

Day 8: Beaches & cream

Today we checked into the Yacht Club, we have just got into the room and are waiting for bags.

I have changed our first onsite ADR quite a few times. It started of as Ale & Compass lunch, then Garden Grill lunch, then Chef de France lunch and until 6am this morning it was Akershus breakfast! We decided we didn't want to get up though, so I went online to change it and an early lunch spot for Beaches & Cream popped up, perfect.

We transferred over from the Universal hotel and had about an hour to kill before our 11:30am reservation. It was fairly quiet when we arrived but was full by time we left, I thought it would be full of families and was surprised that it was mainly adult couples in there.

We were here to have a savoury meal, the desserts look ridiculously sickly to us. First we ordered our drinks, I had a coke and Nev had a coke float. To eat, I have always fancied the tomato bisque and grilled cheese from this menu, Nev was going to have a burger but changed it to the patty melt, mainly as he was wondering what the difference between a burger and a patty is.

I really enjoyed my meal. The soup was thick and creamy and definitely not from a tin, it was delicious. The grilled cheese might be simple but it too was very tasty. Nev is less enthusiastic about his meal, I can only get "it was alright" out of him, I tried one of his chips and it wasn't a particularly good chip. We could only conclude that a patty is a burger in bread rather than on a bun, as that is what he got.

We paid OOP for this as we are on deluxe dining and it would have been a bit if a waste of a credit. Overall a 7.

A patty is a burger - it’s the melt bit that refers to serving it on bread or toasted bread. Looks good though, it was a toss up for me last time between that and the Reuben. Enjoy the Yacht Club!
