Five Fords Fifth Family Floriday Aug 18 - Day 5 - Kennedy Space Center
Sunday 12th August
Didn’t have the best night’s sleep I heard lots of noise for the first time from the neighbour’s. I think a large group of people were checking in late? Thankfully the shouting didn’t last long but it did disturb my night’s sleep! Got up at 6.30am and watched the sun come up, beautiful again. Scott was up a little afterwards and went down to Starbuck’s for our coffees. Not long after 8 everybody was awake. Back to our usual breakfast this morning of fruit loops, other cereals, yogurt and fruit. We we’re all ready and out of the apartment not long after and ready for the journey over to Kennedy Space Center. We needed some petrol so called at the 7-11 next door to us - $30 to fill up. Jamie and Poppy also picked up a slurpee from the shop which I think was 99 cent for a small cup. Not the healthiest of drinks to be having! Set off on our drive and made our first mistake. I thought the Sunpass machine was switched off so we went through the normal toll and paid. We realised afterwards, never mind it was only a few dollars. We made sure to go through Sunpass lane from then on! We continued on with the drive and was soon to be at KSC according to the Sat Nav . Now we’ve visited here a couple of times and of course I don’t know the route here but nothing seemed familiar to me? I can usually go somewhere just the once and have a knack of remembering odd things about a journey. The road’s we were driving on felt different? I asked Scott if Sat Nav had got the right details as I was sure this was the wrong way? We continued going along the little roads and yep we ended up at some kind of back entrance. There was signs saying restricted area and as we turned round we noticed the guard at the barrier was armed! So of course we had to go back up all those little winding roads again to get back onto the right one. I used google maps on my phone instead to get us there and made sure I used KSC Visitor Center as our destination! Due to our unscheduled detour our drive time was nearly 2 hours so we didn’t arrive until 11.30. We had to change our voucher first but thankfully the line to do this wasn’t too long. Poppy got in free because of a promotion that was letting all 10th graders in free? Well so long as they were either 10 or 11, we just had to show Poppy’s passport to confirm age. T-shirt ready! Hayden wanted to watch Heroes & Legends, Astronauts Hall of Fame. This was really good and gave an insight on how the space program started. We spent quite a while looking around in here as it was so interesting. We looked round the rocket garden when we came out. It was really hot and sunny so we didn't spend too much time out here, we were keen for a bit of shade. Hayden then wanted to go on the bus tour next so we joined the queue which at his point was quite long. We didn’t really have that much of a choice but to wait. In the end it took us an hour before we were on one of the buses. We passed by the vehicle assembly building which is huge! We also went by the launch pad which was very interesting, then onto the Apollo/Saturn Centre. We’ve been here before but we were still very much wowed when we saw the size of the rocket. Amazing! Had a really good look around the exhibits and them went on to grab a late lunch in the Moon Rock Café. This consisted of salads, hotdogs, sandwiches and some fruit. It was ok and filled a small hole. After lunch we watched the film there about the Apollo missions and the walk on the moon. It was so interesting, we all really enjoyed this film and exhibit. We had a good look round everywhere then decided to catch the bus back to the visitor centre, thankfully there was no line this time. Next stop was to the Space Shuttle Atlantis, this had changed from what I could remember from our last visit. The film was really good and again, gave a brilliant insight into how the space shuttle program came about. There were lots of fascinating exhibits and areas to walk around and explore. We ended up spending quite a bit of time in here it really was brilliant to see. Unfortunately we’d left it a little too late to see any of the Imax films or Journey to Mars. The park was near to closing. We walked over to see the T-38 Talon Jet and I was surprised to see how small it was. Not quite sure what I was expecting! We then looked the Astronaut Memorial before having a very brief look around the shop. The kids were eager for an ice cream, well Space Dots to be exact so went to the little kiosk to pick some up. I think they must’ve have just filled the machine up or something or they were testing it as the server gave me a big ice cream for free! It was all misshapen but they tasted just as good. How lovely of her. It was now time for us to leave the park it was 7pm. We’d had a brilliant day here and would highly recommend a day out to this park. The drive back was fine, we decided to call into Walmart and pick up something to eat for our dinner as we were tired from our full day. Of course we somehow managed to fill our trolley up with more American items, candy, trwizzlers to name a few. We did get some more fruit though and a pizza. Once back we worked out how to turn the massive oven on! Good job the oven was big as the pizza was massive too. Watched the fireworks from the balcony near the lift’s for a little while. Love this little spot. We all showered, watched TV for a little bit and went to bed at 11pm. After a shaky start we ended up having a fantastic day! We’ve always enjoyed our time in KSC and hopefully we’ll return for another visit sometime. |

Looks like another great day! We're going to KSC for the first time in October and I'm so excited to go! Our daughter (9) has been watching Hidden Figures and Space Camp in preparation! She just has Apollo 13 (my fave) to go
I'm hoping the exhibits will be interactive enough to do hold my son's (6) interest.

What an interesting day out. We haven't been there since 2010 and it seems as if there is more to see now. I don't think there was a bus tour back then. It's a shame you didn't manage to fit everything in that you wanted to do, but sounds like you all had a fab time anyway.

Looks like a fab day. We’ve been to Florida many times and never been to KSC. It’s on our must do list for this year. Do you know how long the 5th grade promotion is running? I was going to buy tickets here before we go next week, as they are working out cheaper to buy here. i’ll not buy him one if the promo is still on?
