Great Lakes Grooving: Day 2 Golf and Geneva

Monday 8 July

The boys and Clive were golfing today and were teeing off very early, so there had been a spot of musical beds, with Paul and Hannah swapping so that we wouldn't be disturbed by them getting up. This nearly worked apart from the jetlag waking me early and Paul forgetting several items from our room, thus ensuring I stayed awake!

Evan had followed Clive's instructions and had the appropriate gear, including smart golf shorts and a shirt with a collar. Paul had not and so had to borrow clothes from Clive. Fortunately, Clive LOVES golf and there was plenty to choose from.

Me and Hannah did have a more leisurely start to the day, getting up some time later. Doreen works from home and had to do some conference calls, so Hannah and I sorted ourselves out for breakfast. I did have to google "how to work a Nespresso" but found a video and very soon we had coffee. Hurrah!

It was very hot and sunny outside but we fancied a walk and to explore the neighbourhood. We left Doreen in peace to work and set off for a walk. It was really lovely and peaceful in the neighbourhood and we found the local stores and then discovered a path that went around another golf course. This course isn't currently in use but is still being maintained so the grass was cut. It was all very nice.

We really enjoyed having a stroll in the sunshine, admiring some very fancy houses that backed onto the golf course, some complete with swimming pools and huge verandas. It was one of those lovely walks where you don't really have a destination but are just enjoying the journey.

We eventually found our way back to the house ready to go into Geneva with Doreen to meet up with the boys for lunch. Downtown Geneva really is adorable, with lots of lovely quirky shops and cute places to eat. We had a great time browsing the shops, a lot of which sold what we generally call "chuff" - ornaments, jewellery and kitchen bits and whatnots. They were the kind of the shops that the boys would have been bored with and whining about within seconds of being there, so it was nice to have a browse without them!

We met up with the boys at the Chicken Shack, a place owned by friends of Clive and Doreen. It's not at all fancy and does great fried chicken. We had a variety of chicken salads and it was all really good. The boys had enjoyed their golf and it had been a good morning for everyone.

After lunch, we split up again and the girls did some more mooching around the shops while the boys headed for golf stores. Doreen was telling us about restaurants that have live music in the summer and how the place all gets decorated for Christmas. It really is charming and a lovely place to spend some time.

We visited the All Chocolate Kitchen which has the most amazing chocolate sculptures. This tree is made from chocolate and the shelf around the middle is made of sugar.

Chocolate T Rex

Doreen bought us some chocolate covered bacon to try. It was . . . interesting!

Back at the house, there was some napping while the boys carried on shopping, having found a Premium Outlets nearby. Evan now seems to be sponsored by Adidas, having found some excellent bargains.

Tonight was a family evening and Clive and Doreen had planned an All American meal for us, being as it was only a few days after the 4th of July. Paul's cousin Daniel was coming over with partner and kids, and also his cousin Shannon.

Ready for the visitors.

We hadn't seen Daniel since he was a young teenager and had never met his children. It was so lovely to catch up with him and he had prepared the most delicious chicken wings to go with the rest of the barbecue food.

Hannah and Evan hung out with the kids, who were enjoying spending time with the "big ones". Shannon came over as well - we had seen her more recently at their big sister's wedding.

The sangria and champagne were flowing and we had really good fun getting to know the cousins and just catching up. It was great family time.

There was a certain amount of putting the world to rights over a glass or two of bourbon towards the end of the evening, and we all had another lovely evening. It's hard to keep up when family live so far away, and getting four people across the Atlantic isn't cheap, but it would be good to see more of each other if we can.

What a lovely day! Days just spent wandering with no objective can sometimes be the best ones!

The family bbq looks fab! Living a long way from family isn’t always easy.

Ha ha I love the Nespresso moment. We had one in Dubai and for the life of me I couldn’t get it work. Turns out there is a right and wrong way to put the pod in. Who knew 🤦
Can’t beat a girly morning mooching in those shops that are awesome to browse but you rarely buy anything ?
Lunch sounds yum and what a fab family evening .

What a lovely relaxing day. The chocolate looks amazing, I would love a chocolate t-Rex 😂

It looks as if you all had a great family/friends get together that evening. It is difficult when family live abroad but it does make the times you do have together all the more special

It is hard being so far away - years go by before you know it as it is so difficult to have regular visits - especially when you have a whole family to buy tickets for.

The Nespresso is not easy to work out! And the girly mooching was lovely - so nice to do it without a soundtrack of boy-whining.

We had a lot of fun with everyone and I'm with you on the chocolate T Rex. I could handle one of those.

I'm so glad you got to see your family in Vietnam - I understand how hard it must be when they are a long way away.
