Great Lakes Grooving: Day 7 Lake of the Clouds

Saturday 13 June

We all slept well again, despite the bug bites, and we made sure to get up earlier this morning so that we could set off earlier. We had our cereal and toast, and of course, coffee, then made up our sandwiches and got ready to go. This time we were going to be prepared - we packed long trousers, hats and plenty of bug spray. No way were we going to let those critters win today!

We got on the road and headed back to the Porkies. This time we were going to hike the Escarpment Trail which was high up and (hopefully) far less buggy.

The weather was much better today with plenty of sunshine, and we felt quite good as we coated ourselves in bug spray and put on our long trousers and hats. At least there was going to be far less flesh on display for bug biting.

This trail is really lovely and gives great views of the Lake of the Clouds.

There was not nearly as much woodland and there was also a breeze on the trail, so although there were bitey creatures around (cheeky gits got me THROUGH my t-shirt), there weren't nearly so many of them. And there were lovely things to look at - result!

The weather was very warm and sunny and we really enjoyed our hike along the trail. Evan did particularly well - his legs had got so many bites that they were quite swollen and he described it as walking with concrete legs, but he didn't moan and just got on with it. What a trouper.

We also watched an Eagle hunting and saw other birds as well.

Heading back along the trail there were more fantastic views and we thought how lovely this park would be in the autumn, when all the leaves change.

After the hike, we headed back, stopping at a beachside bench for our picnic. Then we called into the Visitor Centre to get a magnet and fill up our water.

We were headed for Lake Gogebic next as it's a State Park where you can swim and we really fancied a dip in a lake that was less cold than Superior.

When we got there, it was overcast and slightly windy but although the air wasn't as warm, the water itself was fine. Evan had forgotten his swimming stuff and although we tried hard to persuade him to swim in his underwear, he was having none of it.

The rest of us went in the water, however, and although we were pretty chilly when we got out, it was quite warm in the lake. Evan just paddled instead, rolling his eyes when we pointed out that we were the only people there and he could go in his pants if he wanted to . . .

After that, it was back to our house in Ontonagon. The sun was out again, so we headed back to the beach. Firstly we stopped off for an ice cream at the tiny ice cream shop in the village. We all had strawberry flurries which were lovely and then we dipped our feet in the water.

It really was idyllic - very peaceful and with a wonderful feeling of being far away from it all. You could easily spend quite a few days here and we were feeling extremely relaxed and refreshed by our stay.

Back at the house, it was beer o'clock and also laundry o'clock as we made the most of the frankly ginormous washing machine and dryer. In fact, the machines were so big that I couldn't reach down far enough to get the washing out of them and had to ask the boys to do it!

We used the fancy pizza oven to cook pizzas and then settled down for a couple more episodes of Stranger Things before bed.

What glorious views! And thank goodness the bugs were better behaved!

Strawberry flurries sound delicious!

Such a shame Evan couldn’t swim!

Your walk and swim looked lovely and hurrah for less bugs. Shane Evan didn’t get a swim but I am not surprised he didn’t fancy swimming in his pants

The pizza oven sounded fab too. What a lovely day

Damn teenagers and their sense of personal dignity! Pizza oven was pretty cool - I can see the attraction.

He did really well considering how swollen his bites were. A couple of years ago he would have been really complaining - he's grown up a lot. Ontonagon is a great place to visit - long journey but great relaxation.

They were soo good! It's a shame we always have to go in school/uni holidays for now but one day it would be lovely to do an early autumn trip.
