Great Lakes Grooving: Day 19 Golf and Tacos

Thursday 25 July

I had had a headache as I went to bed but assumed that I would sleep it off. Instead, I woke up at about 5.30am with a banging headache and feeling generally rubbish. I took some paracetamol and went back to bed but started feeling worse and worse. Throw in an upset stomach as well and horrible headache and it was not a good start to the day.

About an hour later, I realised that this might be a migraine and I should have taken a Migraleve tablet instead. Now I had to wait for the initial paracetamol to wear off before I could take anything else. Marvellous.

I lay in bed feeling quite sorry for myself. I suspect it was a combination of dehydration from not drinking enough water the day before, a dose of whatever had given Paul an upset tummy the day before and too much wine. Mix it all together and you have a recipe for feeling quite unwell.

At least I wasn't up at 6.30 for a round of golf! Paul had foolishly continued with some hefty measures of whiskey the night before and was finding it quite difficult to get going. He had shared the basement with Evan and Evan told us that he had managed to get up and promptly returned to bed, looking quite pale.

Still, the golf was still happening and the boys headed off for the course. According to Evan, Paul's game was shocking for the first 9 holes, to the surprise of nobody. Clive had to get him a restorative Gatorade and he did perk up eventually!

Clive's favourite golf outfit is quite subtle.

The boys

I still wasn't feeling great when they got back but put on a brave face. Clive took us to Looms, his favourite breakfast spot and although it all looked lovely, I really couldn't face a cooked breakfast. I went for Greek yogurt with granola and fruit and it was just what I needed. I was also okay to take some migraine tablets by this point so I had my fingers crossed that I would be feeling better soon.

Everyone else said their breakfast was lovely, particularly the very fluffy pancakes. Clive is so Americanised now that he had grits but none of the rest of us could really understand the attraction.

Back at the house, we had a quick nap and by the time I got up, I was feeling better. Hurrah! Clive and Doreen were working, so we had a walk around the neighbourhood where it was extremely hot. Chicago had experienced a heatwave while we had been in the UP and the warmth was still lingering.

We also took a trip to Aurora where there is an outlet mall. The boys did well on the bargain front but Hannah and I came back empty handed. The only purchase we managed was a Frappucino from Starbucks which enabled Hannah to get the Paparazzi type shot of us.

Back at the house I was arranging our activity for the next day. As we had driven into Geneva, I was looking at the map and noticed that we were very close to Fermilab, which is a particle physics research centre. I know that some of my colleagues do research there and had emailed one of them to see if they were over at the time. He wasn't but he put me in touch with a PhD student who is based there and who had agreed to give us a tour. As Hannah is going to study Physics at University, it was super exciting for her to be able to visit a real research facility. And the rest of us like cool science stuff as well.

We also inspected our insect bites while waiting to go out to eat - we thought we'd left the critters behind in the UP but while eating and drinking outside the night before, we had all been a bug buffet - yet again. Fortunately Clive and Doreen had some heavy duty bite relief cream so we all grabbed some.

They took us to a Mexican restaurant in Geneva where we sat outside (with bug spray) and ate lots and lots of tacos, while drinking Margaritas.

We had a really good fun evening and the tacos just kept coming. We think they may have over delivered our order but we weren't complaining and nothing went to waste. One of the types of taco came with a lamb sauce and we amused ourselves by repeatedly saying "Where's the Lamb Sauce? " in a Gordon Ramsay style.

We also went to Graham's, which is an ice cream and chocolate shop and had delicious ice cream, sitting outside on the their white adirondack chairs.

It was a lovely evening, especially after the day had started quite rockily for me and Paul, and nobody went for bedtime whiskey tonight!

Glad you managed to get rid of the migraine eventually. I thankfully don’t suffer but do get sunshine headaches which result in a darkened room therapy so I do sympathise.

Love the golf shorts!

Shame you didn’t manage to get anything at the outlets!

Tacos and margaritas sound perfect! 🍸

I still don't know how Paul managed to play golf at all after all that whiskey!

I think it was Tanna Farms (tannafarms/) and they really enjoyed it. Green fees were around $40 each but Evan was a bit cheaper as he's under 18. Are you planning a trip to the area?
