Happy Holidays in WDW, 2-year-old-style! Day 14: Animal Kingdom and Satu'li Canteen

January 1, 2019
[-- Trip Index --]

So we had kind of hoped that after the late New Year's Eve night, Myla would maybe sleep in a little. Of course - those of you with kids yourself know the way this goes: she was wide awake by 6:30AM. It was alright though - we took her into bed with, and she watched the ipad while we dozed some more. By 7:30 we were awake too, and got up to have a relaxed breakfast.

We spent the morning in the apartment, watching some TV and sitting out on the balcony in the glorious sunshine:

Today was due to be scorcher, the hottest day of the holiday so far, and we could feel it by 9AM!

The good thing about Myla's early wakening, is that she was tired again by 10, so we were able to put her back into bed for a good nap. While she slept, my mom babysat, and Michael and I headed out to Walmart for some groceries, and over to one of the souvenir shops in the area for some cheap souvenir T-shirts and fridge magnets, and also to look for another suitcase:

The thing was, we had luggage included with our plane tickets, including a full suitcase for Myla. I hadn't needed this while packing, so we'd only brought 3 cases. However, my brother, who by now had been in Florida for over a month, was next headed on to Panama for the next part of their road trip tomorrow. And they actually had quite a lot of stuff with them that they wouldn't need in Panama, mostly the warmer clothing that they'd needed in Panama. So we'd agreed with them to source another suitcase, my mom had offered to buy it as she needed a new one anyway, and we could then take all of their winter clothes and unneeded luggage back with us for them for free.

We were back in the apartment by 12, all had a simple lunch, and headed out towards Animal Kingdom just after 1PM. Myla wanted her picture taken with my mom in their matching prints:

We were truly feeling the heat today. The walk from the car to the entrance on a path in the full sunshine with NO shade - we were all sweating by the time we even got to the entrance!

Michael's carrying groceries we picked up in Walmart that morning for my brother & family - we were renting a locker, and they were meeting us in AK later that day to swap these groceries for their luggage.

Luggage sorted, we headed down the various animal trails on Discovery Island, letting Myla have a look everywhere. She loves this - at home, a zoo is her idea of the perfect day out!

By the time we actually got to the Tree Of Life, we were all so hot, we ducked into the big store there to cool down in the air conditioning for a bit.

Then it was back out and over to Asia, to do the Maharajah Jungle Trek! We stopped for an icecream on the way, strawberry ice lollies for everyone!

As a family, we absolutely love these animal trails. Not only for the animals, but also for the theming and detail put into them! I really don't get people who say AK is a half-day park. How can you do the rides, plus all the shows, plus do the animal trails in half a day? Not possible! By skipping the walking trails, you miss so much of the unique theming and atmosphere in the park, in our opinion!

We spent ages looking at the tigers, and also ages in the little aviary towards the end - Myla loved throwing bits of grass towards the birds to feed them, and was also happily watching them play in the water for at least another 10 minutes!

Finally we had to usher her on, as we had a FP for the Lion King show coming up! We made our way from Asia to Africa, stopping for a Photopass on the way:

By now, it was absolutely sweltering, feeling like 30 degrees:

We were glad we didn't have to queue for the Lion King long, as there was very little shade and the overhead fans weren't turned on!

The show itself was great like always! There's so much to see in it, that we could easily see it 2 or more times in one trip, and still not be bored! Myla actually enjoyed it better this second time around, as she knew what was coming and wasn't worried anymore about it being scary.

It was nearly sunset now, and time for the next FP for the Safari! We like doing this multiple times in our trip too, as you really do see different animals every time!

Myla found the sleeping lion hilarious, and shouted "HEY!" at him several times to get him to wake up haha! He didn't budge, of course.

Now here came probably the only moment of the holiday I didn't time or plan it well! We had an FP for Rivers of Light at 6, but by the time we came off the Safari, it was 17:30, and we ended up not having time to get anything to eat. We were all kind of hungry, so this led to some grumpyness. We ate a few of our brought snacks instead, and agreed to get a proper meal after Rivers of Light instead. Next time though, I'd make the Safari FP earlier to leave more time for some food - the Safari itself is a long enough ride that always ends up taking longer than I think!

At Rivers of Light, we met up with my brother and family for the first time today and last time of the holiday - tomorrow they were flying on to Panama, so this was our last night together. While we sat waiting for the show to start, it slowly got dark.

This was the first time seeing Rivers of Light for all of us. We all agreed it was nice - but personally, I was having trouble staying awake! This is mostly due to the late night yesterday, and then being up so early! But the pretty lights and relaxing music meant I was starting to doze off, and had to really work hard to keep my eyes open. Oops lol - I definitely want to give this show another chance when I'm not tired, as I think I'd enjoy it more then.

After RoL, we stood chatting to Steven and Ramona for a while, and let the kids run and play for a bit. They were heading back to their hotel now, as they still needed to pack and get organized for their flight tomorrow, and they'd have an early start so wanted to be in bed on time. We said our goodbyes with lots of hugs and cuddles, and then headed on to Pandora.

We hadn't seen it at night yet, and this was our last chance, as this was our last planned AK day. It didn't disappoint - how pretty! With the sun having gone down, the temperature was a lot nicer too.

At Satuli Canteen, we ordered yummy food - I think this was one of my favorite meals of the entire holiday!

We ended up sitting outside, but the restaurant was so well themed inside too. I especially loved the tiles in the bathrooms, and snapped a picture of them for future inspiration - we need our bathroom redone lol!

After eating, we strolled around a pretty-quiet Pandora for some more, before finally calling it a night at 20:30. Another lovely, sunshine filled day!
