Talking 5-week Split Stay in Florida, Feb/March 2020 - Day 20: More Animal Kingdom & Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Day 20: More Animal Kingdom & Animal Kingdom Lodge!
February 29, 2020

[-- Trip Index --]

Today's quick movie:

When we booked these 3 nights at AKL, and knowing we'd be on-site a total of 21 days, we decided to spend all these AKL days at the actual Animal Kingdom. I know plenty people argue it's a half day park - I would strongly disagree! We don't even do any of the big rides, but it's my daughter's favorite park at this age, and we knew she'd love spending so many days there. So after a full Animal Kingdom day yesterday, we were heading back for another AK day today! Today we were focussing on DinoLand - most notably the Bone Yard playground and trying to get a bunch more autographs for Myla's book.

Myla and I woke up around 6:15 - Michael was already away to the gym. I pulled the curtains open, and Myla and I snuggled in my bed, watching the sun rise over the Savannah. Magical!

It was another cold start to the day with temps barely over 10C, and we weren't in a real hurry to get out the door early. Myla had a snack and I got her dressed, so Michael could take her out. They left around 8:15, looked around the lobby, and went to check out the playground past the pool - Michael said it was really good and Myla played there for a while until she got too cold!

In the mean time, I did my work on the laptop, had a shower, and got ready. Michael and Myla came back, we watched the caretakers feed the animals for a bit, and we all left the room around 9ish to have breakfast at the Mara.

Michael ordered the bobotie, Myla had the kids' Mickey Waffle meal, and I had the oatmeal, it came to a total of $22. We also got coffees with our refillable mugs. It was all lovely, hot and tasty! There was a bit too much cinnamon on my oatmeal to my taste - but that's not the oatmeal's fault and probably more to do with my own pickyness lol. To our surprise, Myla loved the waffles, and ate the vast majority of it!

Michael went back to the room to put the refillable mugs back, and Myla and I waited for him in the lobby before checking out the gift shop.

I still think he should have bought that hat!

We finally got on an Animal Kingdom bus around 10:15 and were at the park gates for 10:30. It looked like another busy day!

We decided to go look for Timon and Rafiki first, as I heard their queue can be pretty big later on. On the way, we ran into Kevin again. Hi Kevin!

The queue for Timon and Rafiki was lengty enough already but we decided to just get it over and done with today and joined up. It was still pretty cold and I did my best to stand in the sunshine wherever I could!

It ended up taking around 35-40 minutes - the group in front of us was a bunch of cheerleaders, like 8 or 9, and they EACH had an autograph book, and EACH had individual photos taken, and then a bunch of different group photos too so it took forever once we finally thought it was nearly our turn! Myla was such a good girl though, and waited patiently without whining.

Timon loved her dress!

They were both funny and very cuddly, and Myla loved it! Next up we walked to DinoLand and let Myla loose in the Boneyard. This is an awesome big kids' playground in Animal Kingdom - I wish all parks had these! We'd walked past it before and she'd begged to go in then, but it hadn't suited our plans so we had promised her to come back another day. Myla was right off to the slides - you'd think we don't have these at home!

There is only one (staffed) exit and entrance, so as parents we could relax a little too - we kept her in our line of sight at all times since it was busy, but we knew she couldn't go anywhere. After about 40 minutes of playing, she came back over to us and announced she was hungry. Good idea - so were we! We headed across the road to Restaurantsaurus to get some lunch.

This restaurant has a bad reputation, but I love it in here! We both got the plant-based Spicy South Western burger, and it was absolutely yum! We used the toppings bar to pimp out our burgers and make up a side salad, and Myla filled herself up on a banana, chips, and some more Goldfish crackers. Total was $29 for lunch!

After lunch, we had a toilet break. Myla had drunk quite a lot of water from all the running around in the playground, but she once again was refusing to pee on the noisy toilets. I did get her to go in with me, but she wouldn't get on the toilet. I told her to let me know if she did need to go, and she said she would... I'm sure you experienced mommies can see where this is going.

We asked Myla what she wanted to do next, and she only wanted to go back to the Boneyard. So back we went - she played on the slides and went off to discover some of the little caves and other areas too.

We took her over the little bridge and showed her the sandy area on the other side, where she got immediately stuck in with a bucket and spade (there's tons lying around everywhere for the kids to use). It's a little bit quieter here with no bigger kids.

However, after about 20 minutes of her playing in the sand, I watched her from a distance stand up, in a funny stance, and start to cry. I went over to her, and she said, crying, "Mommy I had an accident! I peed! I'm sorry." I was rolling my eyes a bit, but assured her it was OK, it was only an accident. To be fair, this was her one and only daytime accident on this holiday (she had 1 night-time one later on), as she does normally warn me in time when she can't hold it. She was just too wrapped up in playing to remember to pee this time - it just happens from time to time when you're 3! I carried her to the nearest toilets past the Restaurantsaurus giftshop, where she did a proper pee for me on the toilets. I changed her underwear (I always have clean ones in the bag) but I didn't have any clean leggings with me so she had to go bare-legged from then on. Luckily it had warmed up a little, so she didn't mind.

After some more tears from her and some more assurances from us that it was OK, we asked her if she fancied doing a ride and pointed to TriceraTop Spin, right in front of us. She agreed, so we joined the queue. This was actually a bit longer than we thought, about 20 minutes or so, but Myla loved the ride, so we didn't mind.

It's exactly the same as Dumbo or Magic Carpets, but she loves those too haha!

By then it was 13:30 and we decided the time was right for some more character meets! They'd all been away on a long break, and we joined the small queue for Goofy before he came back - once he was back, the queue grew much longer very quick! He was in a very colorful outfit, fun as always.

We timed it just right that we were able to jump into Donald's queue while he was still off on break too - there were only 2 people in front of us, and he returned about 5 minutes after we joined the queue, so a short wait again!

The next empty page in her book was Pluto, so we went to look for him next. Myla loved this 'looking for a character' too, like we were truly on a hunt for them - even though I of course knew roughly where they were haha. We found him behind the Dinosaur gift shop. Weirdly enough, he was the only Animal Kingdom meet we encountered without a Photopass Photographer!

Last but not least, we went to look for Chip 'n Dale! Myla LOVES them - Chip 'n Dale Nutty Tales is one of her favorite things to watch on Disney+. We found them up a little trail not too far from Daisy. There was a little bit of a queue but it moved fast enough, and Myla entertained herself by climbing up and jumping off random rocks.

Our turn! She loved the dinosaur suits and exclaimed, "Oh they're SO SOFT! " Myla certainly made sure to get her share of cuddles in lol.

That was enough meet n greets for Myla for one day, and she asked if we could go back to the Boneyard once again. That was fine - I'd already cancelled our earlier FastPass for the Finding Nemo Musical since we'd seen that a few days ago, and we had no other plans today other than the Kilimanjaro Safari at 15:30 and another Lion King Show after that. So it was Myla's pick what she wanted to do out of the whole park, and of course the playground won haha. She spent more time on the slides, and in the sandy area - with no accidents this time.

By 15:15, we left the Boneyard, and walked over to Africa for our Safari FP.

When we got there and parked the stroller, we found Myla had fallen fast asleep! We lifted her out anyway, and I carried her into the FP queue - it was quite long (busy everywere in the park today), so we figured she might wake up after a 20 minute power nap and still enjoy the Safari.

She slept all the way through the queue and boarding our truck, and woke up when it pulled away. She was instantly wide awake when she saw where we were, and enjoyed the safari, a white rhino passed our truck very close by much to her excitement!

She was really getting the hang of the overhead pictures of the animals too now, and tried to find every one we saw out there, on the sign too.

When we came off the Safari, it was past 4PM, and time to join the Lion King Show fastpass queue. Myla was very excited about this - if you read yesterday's trip report, you'll know she got picked to participate towards the end, so she was already saying she wanted to make music again and she was going to march around the theatre again etc. We had to temper her expectations a bit by telling her, no, you won't get picked every time! There's loads of kids, and they can only pick a couple, so it'll be different kids this time. She absolutely refused to believe us, and kept insisting she'd join in again. I already whispered something to Michael about the massive tantrum we might have on our hands when she realizes she's not picked - and what do you know, she DID get picked again! I couldn't believe it LOL, but Myla was off my lap and away with one of the dancers as soon as they approached her!

Like seriously, what are the odds lol! Now she's NEVER gonna believe me again when I tell her she won't get picked. Myla was super happy though, all buzzing at getting to do it again, and we were laughing but very happy for her too. (see the little video at the top of my post!)

By now it was past 5:30PM, we were hungry for dinner again, and decided we wanted to eat in Satuli Canteen again. We walked over - fast, because it was getting very cold in the shade, and got more yummy tofu bowls. This time I got the rice as a base and Michael the potato hash, and I shared the chocolate dessert with Myla, who had the kids' Uncrustables meal and ate a good bit of it.

We honestly could have stayed a bit longer, but the temperature was dropping fast, and Myla's leggings were still dirty and wet, so it was just getting too cold to have her walk around with bare legs. We made our way back to the bus, and stopped in the hotel shop to buy some more fresh fruit, bread and peanut butter for the morning, plus some crisps for tonight.

We were back in our room just before 7. Myla had a bath, and we all just chilled before going to sleep around 8:30PM - another brilliant day, we were just absolutely loving Animal Kingdom Lodge! 😍

Am loving reading your trip report. It’s one of the highlights of my lockdown! Every morning I make a cup of tea and sit down to read one of your days. We are booked to go for three weeks on August 1st but doubt if that will go ahead now. Your little girl is so well behaved. She’s a real credit to you.

Aw thank you, that is such a lovely thing to say! One thing the lockdown is good for, is giving me time to actually write all these haha.
I'm sorry to hear about your August trip - not looking likely! Hopefully you can rebook?

I’ve had a lovely afternoon in the garden sat reading your trip report. It must seem so long ago now with all that’s going on. Five weeks sounds amazing and it definitely seems to have given you the extra time to go at a slower pace and have chilled out park trips - although I do admire your husbands dedication to the gym!

You are doing well with the character meets and I love Mylas outfits. Animal Kingdom Lodge looks a lovely hotel.

I love how chilled your days sound yet you still pack loads in. Whenever we get to go, I think we'll be spending a lot of time in the boneyard playground too.

Another fantastic day. How lucky for Myla to be picked to join in with the show twice.
